Chapter 5 – Overplaying His Hand

Upon hearing Wu Xuan's inquiry, Tang Old Master secretly thought things were going awry. He knew his grandson's capabilities all too well. Just as he was racking his brain for a way to salvage the situation, he heard Tang Yan's voice.

"Wu Xuan, you're absolutely right. Today, I must express my feelings to Miss Lin. No matter how she perceives me in the end, I won't argue anymore. Someone, bring me the brush and ink!"

Tang Old Master couldn't help but feel exasperated. Did this boy think he was the reincarnation of the God of Literature? He had never touched a book, yet he wanted to compose a good poem? Soon, Tang Old Master realized he was mistaken. This rascal had indeed read extensively, especially those erotic picture books hidden under his bed!

Could it be that this boy intended to create some vulgar piece? The thought made Tang Old Master's blood pressure rise even higher.

Soon, the servants brought the four treasures of the study, and a large sheet of snow-white paper was spread on the table.

"Tang Yan, can you start now?" Qin Changdao sneered, a hint of disdain flashing in his eyes.

Qin Changdao's martial prowess in the City Lord's Mansion wasn't top-notch, only at the second level of the Profound Rank. However, his literary skills far surpassed his martial abilities. Many of the documents in the City Lord's Mansion had been penned or reviewed by him.

As a guest official of the City Lord's Mansion, he was well aware of the happenings in Yun City, especially regarding this infamous young master of the Tang Family, known for his lack of learning and skills. Someone like Qin Changdao, who had a bit of arrogance in his bones, had little regard for these spoiled brats.

He was eagerly waiting for Tang Yan to write some illegible scrawl and compose a terrible poem, so he could laugh at the Tang Family.

"Miss Lin, as I mentioned, I have worked on this poem for three years, revising it 5,209 times. Today marks the 5,210th revision. This number represents my feelings." Tang Yan ignored Qin Changdao and said this instead.

Everyone pondered for a moment and then understood. 5,210 sounded like "I love you" in Chinese.

The Tang Family members couldn't help but secretly give a thumbs up to their young master. When it came to shamelessness, if he claimed second place, who would dare claim first?

Even Lin Dongxue, who had previously held a strong opinion against Tang Yan, found her anger and disdain slightly diminished.

Tang Yan's cheesy words, which would have been outdated in his previous life, were fresh and heart-stirring in this world.

She even secretly decided that as long as what Tang Yan wrote was somewhat decent, she would let bygones be bygones.

"Please, Tang Yan." From the beginning, Wu Xuan hadn't noticed any sign of stage fright in Tang Yan. His confidence and composure piqued her interest in his poem.

Tang Yan didn't waste any more words. He rolled up his sleeves, dipped the brush in ink, and began writing on the pristine white paper.

Everyone craned their necks, eager to see if Tang Yan's writing would resemble a dog's scrawl or a cat's scratch.

"Meeting Joy."

These two words, serving as the title, were placed at the top center of the paper.

Without any deliberate pause or awkwardness, the two characters were written in one fluid motion, with strokes as strong as iron and as graceful as silver hooks!

Tang Yan's physique was already upright, and his appearance was quite handsome. Dressed in a robe with gold trimmings, holding a brush with focused eyes, and with the two characters on the paper exuding a masterly style, he instantly embodied the image of a refined gentleman.

Elegant, graceful, truly handsome...

Tang Old Master's eyes widened larger than a bull's, and Uncle Mo's jaw nearly dropped to his neck. These two elders had watched Tang Yan grow up since birth. When did this boy learn to write so well?

Even Qin Changdao's eyes nearly popped out. Could such fine writing really come from this spoiled brat?

Lin Dongxue and Wu Xuan exchanged glances, both noticing the surprise in each other's eyes.

"Excellent writing!" Wu Xuan praised without reservation, and even Qin Changdao nodded in agreement.

"Silently, I ascend the western tower alone, the moon like a hook, the lonely parasol trees lock the deep courtyard in autumn's chill..."

The first stanza flowed like clouds and water, without a single pause or hesitation, as if he had truly practiced it tens of thousands of times, writing with such fluidity and naturalness.

The delicate heart of a woman, upon reading such a desolate verse, Lin Dongxue's heart trembled violently.

Qin Changdao furrowed his brows, his eyes filled with amazement, admiration, and disbelief...

As for Tang Old Master and Uncle Mo, they were already lost in a daze, wondering if they were dreaming. Tang Old Master pinched Uncle Mo hard, and seeing Uncle Mo's grimace, he realized it wasn't a dream.

Uncle Mo wore a mournful expression, feeling utterly wronged. At his age, almost ready for the grave, why was he being pinched like a child? And with such force?

"Endlessly tangled, yet still chaotic, such is parting sorrow, a different taste lingers in the heart."

When Tang Yan finished writing the second stanza, Lin Dongxue's heart pounded like a deer.

The two women looked at Tang Yan, their initial disdain and curiosity now transformed into feelings of being moved and relieved.

As the poem ended, the hall fell into silence.

Even Qin Changdao, who was ready to find fault, remained silent, reading the poem over and over in his mind. At fifty-seven years old, he still found himself moved by the poignant sadness of the poem.

Tang Yan did not interrupt the silence.

After a long while, Wu Xuan sighed, "I never expected Tang Yan to be such a passionate person. Initially, I didn't believe it and thought he was just spouting nonsense. But after reading this poem, it seems Tang Yan truly put his heart into it. Dongxue, I think we should let this matter go. What do you think?"

Lin Dongxue had already decided that as long as Tang Yan's writing was passable, she would forgive him. And this time, Tang Yan's poem not only passed but also deeply impressed everyone.

Each word and line was concise yet filled with emotion. Endlessly tangled, yet still chaotic, such is parting sorrow, a different taste lingers in the heart. Upon reading this line, a young girl's heart was thrown into disarray.

The poem vividly expressed deep longing and unspoken love, with a subtlety and restraint that was captivating and inescapable.

Being the City Lord's daughter, Lin Dongxue quickly regained her composure. The shyness in her eyes vanished in an instant as she looked deeply at Tang Yan and said crisply, "This time, I'll believe you. Our City Lord's Mansion won't pursue this matter further. But if it happens again, regardless of the reason, we won't be lenient! Let's go!"

With that, Lin Dongxue turned to leave, and just as she was about to exit the hall, she suddenly instructed, "Qin Changdao, this matter can't end without a trace. Take that piece of evidence on the table back."

Without further ado, she hurriedly left without looking back.

Qin Changdao, who was also enamored with Tang Yan's poem, didn't waste words. He rolled up the paper and followed her out.

"Tang Yan truly opened my eyes today. Although your reputation in Yun City isn't great, I believe you have a talent for poetry. If you focus on your literary pursuits, you could achieve something significant in the future. Until we meet again, farewell." Wu Xuan left a parting remark and gracefully departed.

The remaining members of the Tang Family finally snapped back to reality. Tang Old Master and Uncle Mo stared at Tang Yan as if they were looking at a rare beauty.

Sensing the inquisitive gazes of the two elders, Tang Yan secretly thought to himself that he might have overdone it with his act!
