Chapter 8 – Where Did All These Old Sayings Come From?!

The second day.

"Bai Deputy Commander, you're quite familiar with the gun now. The Mutant Beasts are large, so when we get close, hitting them shouldn't be a problem. How about we set off today?" Tan Jie asked.

Bai Ye waved his hand impatiently, "Old Tan, there's an old saying, 'Haste makes waste.' Yesterday, I was practicing on stationary targets, but Mutant Beasts aren't inanimate; they move. Today, I'll practice on moving targets!"

Tan Jie suppressed his anger and reluctantly nodded.

The third day.

"Bai Deputy Commander, you've practiced on moving targets. Shouldn't we act today? I'm not trying to rush you, but our food supply in the East District is nearly depleted, and we're running low on bullets. If this continues, we'll collapse before we even deal with the Mutant Beasts. So, how about today..."

"Old Tan, there's an old saying, 'More haste, less speed...'"

Bai Ye had just started when Tan Jie was about to explode. Fuck, where did all these old sayings come from!?

Just as he was about to lose it, Bai Ye changed his tone, "But as the saying goes, 'Strike while the iron is hot,' so... there's no time to lose. Let's set off as soon as possible!"

Tan Jie: "..."

His chest heaved violently, and his triangular eyes glared at Bai Ye, so angry he wished he could split Bai Ye's head open to see how many old sayings were inside!

"Old Tan, what are you standing around for? Let's go, quick march! Just thinking about the residents of Graysoil Town suffering from hunger due to the Mutant Beast threat feels like a knife twisting in my heart!"

Bai Ye, already several meters ahead, urged impatiently, as if Tan Jie was the one delaying and unwilling to set off.

Tan Jie took a deep breath, silently following with his men, his heart filled with murderous intent. He could barely hold back. Once Bai Ye killed the Mutant Beasts, he swore he'd kill Bai Ye immediately, or he'd die from anger sooner or later.

After a long while, the group arrived at the walls of Graysoil Town.

Rather than walls, it was more like a dirt wall made of piled earth, bricks, and barbed wire. Though crude, it was quite effective.

"Bai Ye, brother, haven't seen you in three days, and you're looking even better." On the wall, Wang She greeted with a smile, completely ignoring Tan Jie.

Now that Bai Ye was clean, and at the bright age of youth, even in tattered clothes, he couldn't hide the vibrant energy unique to young people.

Bai Ye glanced at Wang She and said indifferently, "Call me Bai Deputy Commander."

His expression was cold, giving no face to Wang She, the West District Commander, which surprisingly made Tan Jie feel a bit better.

So Bai Ye wasn't targeting just me; he treated everyone the same.

Wang She squinted slightly, calculating in his mind. He had heard about Bai Ye's attitude toward Tan Jie these past few days, and their discord was exactly what he wanted. His biggest fear was the two of them getting along like brothers, which would increase the pressure on his West District.

Logically, Bai Ye and Tan Jie's discord should mean a better attitude towards him, the West District Commander. After all, the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Yet, Bai Ye treated him the same, which was intriguing.

Could this kid be blinded by the Forbidden Item, thinking he's invincible and disregarding the two Commanders?

Or is he hiding his true abilities, pretending to be arrogant to lower others' guard?

In truth, Bai Ye wasn't hiding anything; he was simply arrogant. A mere town Commander wasn't worth his attention before, let alone now, three days later.

The saying "See a man in a new light after three days" applied well to Bai Ye, because today, three days later, his time reserve had reached three minutes and fifty seconds!

What does three minutes and fifty seconds mean? It means Bai Ye could instantly kill Wang She, Tan Jie, and even their subordinates!

That's why he had no interest in befriending Wang She and Tan Jie. To ordinary people, a Commander of an 800-strong town might be a big deal, wielding the power of life and death. But to him, sorry... everyone here is trash.

The reason he hadn't killed them yet wasn't out of kindness. Though he came from a civilized world, he wasn't a saint. The crimes Wang She and Tan Jie committed in Graysoil Town over the years were enough to execute them a hundred times. Killing such people didn't burden his conscience at all.

The main reason was the Mutant Beasts.

The Mutant Beasts weren't just one, but a group. Bai Ye needed Wang She and Tan Jie to help deal with them, or if the beasts breached the town, he'd suffer too.

At this moment, Tan Jie handed over a battered tactical binoculars, "The Mutant Beasts are hiding nearby. These bastards never come within a hundred meters of Graysoil Town, just circling outside. If anyone dares to go out, they'll attack."

Bai Ye took the binoculars, seeing a barren land through them. The yellow-brown ground was cracked with countless gaping wounds, the wind howling, stirring up a storm of sand and dust.

Such terrain should have no plant life, yet sparse weeds, dead trees, and even some bushes grew on the ground.

These were mutated plants, though not deeply mutated, so they hadn't become living Forbidden Items.

His gaze swept through the binoculars, quickly spotting several pairs of crimson eyes in a bush over a hundred meters away!

The howling wind pressed down the bushes, revealing their full appearance.

Hyenas!

These Mutant Beasts had mutated from hyenas. Their originally brown fur had fallen off in large patches, replaced by gray-purple tumors covering their bodies, the surface of the tumors covered with blood vessel-like protrusions, and their claws and teeth sharp as blades.

"Why are there only a few?" Bai Ye put down the binoculars and asked.

"These few Mutant Beasts are just scouts sent by the Hyena King to keep an eye on us, preventing us from escaping," Tan Jie explained.

"These pups aren't dumb. What's your battle plan?"

"Go out of town!" Wang She squinted, watching the hyenas hidden in the bushes, "Tan Jie and I will each lead our elites, along with you, out of town. We'll engage the hyenas while you use the 'Breath of Bones' to kill them."

"Why do we have to go out of town?" Bai Ye was slightly surprised, "Can't we lure them over and shoot from a high vantage point?"

Wang She shook his head, "We've tried that before. We sent people as bait to lure the hyenas within a hundred meters, then opened fire, killing a few. But after that, the hyenas got smart. No matter how we lured them, they wouldn't come close, so we have to go out and fight!"

Bait? Bai Ye's heart stirred. He didn't need to think to know the fate of those bait; they were surely dog food by now.

In the Wasteland, the least valuable thing is human life.
