Chapter 12 – Is the Magistrate's Office haunted?

Looking at Chen Xun outside the iron bars, Dawei and the other two were so frightened they nearly lost their souls.

They had watched with their own eyes as Chen Xun appeared in an unbelievable manner!

It was simply the means of an immortal!

What was going on?

Wasn't Chen Xun just a mortal like them?

Who would have thought he was actually an immortal!!!

"Spare us, Immortal! Spare us, Immortal!"

Dawei and the other two fell to their knees, more terrified than ever, filled with extreme regret.

They had actually picked a fight with an immortal!

Now, Dawei and the others understood that when Chen Xun previously mentioned an immortal killing the black tiger, he was referring to himself!

"I wanted to spare you, but you didn't spare me."

Chen Xun smiled slightly, opened his palm, and three flickering flames appeared. With a gentle wave, the flames slowly drifted toward Dawei and the others.

Seeing the approaching flames, Dawei and the others instantly felt the presence of death and screamed in horror:

"Murder! Murder!"

Instantly, the entire prison was awakened!

The shouting only made it worse; the flames accelerated and attached themselves to Dawei and the others, quickly burning them into fiery figures, mixed with their painful wails!

Chen Xun merely smiled faintly at the scene, his figure gradually fading away.

At the same time, the jailers rushed over, and the prisoners in each cell pressed against the bars, watching in terror as the flames illuminated the cell where Dawei and the others were.

"Ahhhhh!"

Two jailers, shocked at the sight of the three figures rolling on the ground in flames, stood dumbfounded for a moment before turning to fetch water to extinguish the fire.

But by the time the jailers returned with water, Dawei and the others had already been reduced to ashes.

The jailers were so frightened that they immediately reported the incident.

That night, Ji Bochang was awakened from his sleep and summoned Ji Ba to urgently head to the prison.

Staring in shock at the three piles of ashes and listening to the jailers' accounts, Ji Bochang and Ji Ba's eyes trembled.

A quick look at "pawread dot com" will leave you more fulfilled.

The prison was dark and damp, with no source of fire. How could these three prisoners suddenly catch fire and be burned to ashes?

Such an event had never occurred, not since Ji Bochang took office, nor in history.

This incident was full of eerie implications.

"Who were the three dead prisoners?"

Ji Bochang immediately asked in a serious tone.

The jailer quickly replied, "Reporting to the town chief, they were Dawei, Xu Qiang, and Skinny Monkey, the three hunters arrested today in the black tiger case!"

It was them?

Ji Bochang and Ji Ba were taken aback.

Thinking of the case, they both simultaneously thought of Chen Xun.

Ji Bochang frowned and asked, "Did anyone enter the prison?"

The two jailers immediately knelt in fear, saying, "Town chief, we were on high alert, not even a mosquito got in!"

In truth, the two jailers were also feeling guilty, as they dared not admit to sleeping on the job.

Who could have anticipated such an event?

Ji Bochang nodded slightly and said, "Do not publicize this matter for now; I will investigate it myself."

"Yes!"

The two jailers quickly agreed, and only after Ji Bochang and Ji Ba left the prison did they dare to stand up, their bodies already soaked in cold sweat.

It was foreseeable that for some time, these two jailers would not dare to sleep on the job.

.........

Outside the prison.

Ji Bochang said helplessly, "Fortunately, these three hunters were outsiders with no relatives in town; otherwise, this incident would be hard to explain."

"The town chief is right," Ji Ba bowed and replied.

Ji Ba was someone Ji Bochang had personally promoted, and he was responsible for Ji Bochang's personal safety, so Ji Bochang often brought him along.

Ji Bochang glanced at Ji Ba and asked, "Ji Ba, what do you think of this matter?"

Ji Ba hesitated, quickly understanding the question, and then said bitterly, "Town chief, I carefully observed the scene in the prison earlier and found no clues..."

The implication was clear: Ji Ba himself did not know.

"However... town chief, there is something I am unsure if I should say," Ji Ba suddenly said.

Ji Bochang: "Speak."

Ji Ba was silent for a moment, his heart beating slightly faster, and said, "Town chief, precisely because there are no clues, I believe... this was not done by a human..."

Ji Bochang's eyes changed, and he snorted coldly, "Hmph! Are you suggesting our government office is haunted?"

Ji Ba panicked and quickly bowed, "I misspoke!"

But in Ji Ba's view, there was no other possibility besides haunting.

Ghosts were not surprising, given the existence of immortals.

Ji Bochang's eyes narrowed, and he said, "Earlier, the jailers mentioned that the three prisoners shouted 'murder' before they were awakened, indicating that the prisoners saw something before they died, possibly their killer. Unfortunately, they were burned alive, leaving no evidence."

"Strangely, the jailers rushed over immediately, and none of the prisoners saw any culprit at the scene... The culprit truly came and went without a trace, like a ghost... Your suggestion that it wasn't done by a human seems very plausible."

Thinking deeply, Ji Bochang felt a chill, tightened his robe, and continued, "But then again, everything has a cause and effect. Even if it were a ghost, why would it kill those three? Why not before, but only after they were imprisoned?"

Ji Ba shook his head, also feeling a chill.

If there was a motive, the ghost was unknown, but a human did have one.

That was Chen Xun.

But all signs pointed to something beyond what Chen Xun could do.

Unless Chen Xun wasn't human.

"Phew." Ji Bochang shivered slightly and said, "Ji Ba, in a few days, invite a Taoist priest to the government office for a ritual; this town chief feels uneasy."

"Yes, town chief," Ji Ba nodded in agreement.

Ji Bochang was about to leave when he suddenly paused and said, "Tomorrow morning, accompany me to visit Chen Xun."

Ji Ba was momentarily stunned but understood. Although it seemed impossible for Chen Xun to be involved, the town chief couldn't resist asking.

"Yes."

It seemed like a sleepless night was ahead.

.........

The next day.

Old Li was about to go out when he saw two people standing outside the courtyard. Curious, he looked closer and was shocked to see it was the town chief and Constable Ji.

Hearing they were there to see Chen Xun, he quickly and respectfully invited them into the courtyard and brought two benches.

"Town chief, Chen Xun he..."

Old Li was about to say something respectfully when Chen Xun came out of the house, glanced at Ji Bochang and Ji Ba, and then smiled, "Grandpa Li, you can go about your business. I'll entertain the town chief and Constable Ji."

"Uh, alright, alright."

Old Li, having lived for half his life, was a wise man and knew the town chief had business with Chen Xun, so he bowed and left.

However, there was one thing Old Li couldn't understand.

When did Chen Xun become so important? Normally, the town chief would summon Chen Xun to the government office, so why was the town chief visiting personally... Strange, strange.

Ji Bochang saw Chen Xun approaching and got straight to the point, "Chen Xun, last night..."

Soon, Ji Bochang recounted the strange events that occurred in the prison the previous night.

Chen Xun was surprised, "That happened?"
