Chapter 13 – Rising Power

Actually, Jiang Yuechu didn't like eating pork.

But as piece after piece of roasted meat went down her throat, a warm current surged more and more fiercely in her stomach.

The feeling of hunger quickly faded away.

She broke off another piece, ready to put it into her mouth.

But her movements suddenly paused.

Hmm?

She stopped, closed her eyes, and carefully sensed the changes within her body.

Something was off.

Very off.

The hunger in her stomach had long disappeared, and logically, her body's energy and blood should have been replenished by now.

Yet, the warm current not only didn't stop but grew even more intense.

Like gentle little snakes, it coursed through her meridians, constantly washing over and widening the original pathways.

This...

Jiang Yuechu suddenly opened her eyes, looking down at the piece of oily roasted meat in her hand, her eyes filled with shock and disbelief.

This demon flesh not only restored energy and blood.

It could also... increase the upper limit of her cultivation?!

A bold thought that made her heart race exploded in her mind.

Slaying demons to gain Dao practice, using it to enhance the Hundred Demon Compendium.

Consuming demons to increase energy and blood, using it to strengthen one's foundation.

Damn!

She could no longer care about the disgusting stench, grabbing the remaining half of the pig leg and devouring it ravenously.

Eat!

As long as it could make her stronger, never mind pig demon meat, even... well, maybe not that.

The hind leg was quickly devoured.

Jiang Yuechu licked her fingers, still slick with oil, her gaze falling on the two large corpses outside the ruined temple.

She stood up, grabbed her knife, and strode over.

Tonight, no one is getting any sleep!

...

The last pig bone was thrown into the fire, turning into charcoal.

Jiang Yuechu let out a long breath, the white mist dispersing in the cool morning breeze.

Three whole days.

Two String-Attuned Stage pig demons, skin and bones, except for a few too hard to chew, had all been swallowed into her stomach.

At this moment, she only felt the energy and blood within her surging like the Yangtze River, washing over her meridians.

She even felt that her cultivation level seemed about to touch the next threshold.

Jiang Yuechu's lips curled into a smile.

Not bad.

Any improvement is a good thing.

She couldn't help but think of the corpses of the Tiger Mountain God and the Green-faced Gentleman, such large piles just wasted in the wilderness, it was simply a waste of good meat.

"What a pity for all that good meat..."

She shook her head, dismissing the small regret from her mind.

Oh well.

Fortunate to gain, resigned to lose.

Not knowing before was one thing, but she would pay attention in the future.

For now, the most important thing was the demons in Jincheng County.

She had delayed here for three days, not knowing if that creature was still around.

But there was no other way.

Dragging the remaining corpses along the road would be too cumbersome and too conspicuous.

Clearing her mind of distractions, Jiang Yuechu stood up and dusted off her pants.

"Let's go, old buddy, time for work."

The horse, hearing this, lifted its head, pausing its chewing on grass roots.

It glanced at Jiang Yuechu.

"Hey, you beast, you dare give me attitude?"

Jiang Yuechu laughed, walking over to pat its face, "You've eaten and drunk your fill, it's time to move, or you'll really turn into a pig."

The horse reluctantly snorted, accepting its miserable fate.

One person and one horse once again set off on the official road to Jincheng.

...

The gates of Jincheng County were wide open, like the gaping mouth of a dead man.

A dozen Chitong Steeds, entirely black, entered the city.

Leading them were two men.

One was slightly older, around forty, with a calm demeanor.

The other was much younger, with a sharp look in his eyes.

"This smell..."

The young man frowned, reining in his horse, waving a hand in front of his nose.

The wind carried an indescribable stench, and even though he had seen many horrific scenes, the smell was still quite unpleasant.

Xu Nian's expression remained unchanged, he simply said, "You'll get used to it."

On both sides of the street, most of the doors and windows of the houses were in ruins.

In the corners, by the roadside, dark, congealed bloodstains were everywhere.

The young man also gripped the handle of his sword tightly, speaking in a deep voice, "Be careful, it's said this demon calls itself the Black-Clothed Sword Immortal, its sword energy is rampant, and it has reached the Resonating Bone stage."

Resonating Bone.

Those two words made the breath of the dozen or so riders behind them hitch slightly.

"Split up and search."

Xu Nian gave the order, "Groups of three, if you find anything unusual, signal immediately. Remember, don't act recklessly."

"Yes!"

The group responded, quickly splitting into several teams, riding off in different directions.

Xu Nian and the young man, along with one other, slowly moved forward along the main street.

"Brother Xu, what do you think this demon is after?"

The young man lowered his voice, puzzled, "Slaughtering villages, occupying cities, it doesn't eat, could it be trying to become a king of the mountain?"

"Who knows."

Xu Nian shook his head, "Don't try to guess the mind of a demon, in the end, it all comes down to two words."

"What two words?"

"Seeking death."

The young man fell silent.

Indeed, that was the purpose of the Demon-Suppressing Bureau's existence.

No matter how great a demon you were, how powerful your abilities, if you dared to act so recklessly in human territory, there was only one path—death.

They turned a corner, coming upon a private school.

The gate had collapsed, inside lay a dozen small bodies, all children around seven or eight years old.

An elderly teacher with white hair had been nailed to the wall through his eye socket with a writing brush.

On the wall beneath him, two crooked lines of bloody characters were written.

The young man's eye twitched, about to see what those two lines said.

But just then.

A grating dragging sound came from the end of the long street.

The three of them looked up sharply.

A massive black figure slowly emerged from the swirling dust.

Pig-headed, human-bodied.

Its huge pig face was covered in blood, its eyes filled with a violent crimson.

On its shoulder, it carried a thick wooden stake, from which a raggedly dressed woman was hanging upside down by iron chains.

The woman was still struggling, making muffled sounds, clearly having had something cut away.

"Beast!"

Liu Chen shouted angrily, about to draw his sword.

A hand, however, pressed heavily on his sword hilt.

Xu Nian shook his head, his gaze still fixed on the figure at the end of the street.

He sat high on his horse, his voice calm.

"Black-Clothed Sword Immortal?"

The pig demon didn't deny it, baring its fangs in a grin.

"I came to look for traces of my sons, but caught a scent, so I came to see."

Its blood-red eyes swept over the three, finally settling on Xu Nian.

"Didn't expect... it really is the Demon-Suppressing Bureau."

The young man's expression was strange.

Sons?

This demon had sons?

Xu Nian's face remained expressionless, he simply said, "I don't know about your sons, and I don't care about your sons."

He paused, his tone icy.

"Now, let her go, and I'll make your death easier."

The pig demon's gaze turned completely cold.

It didn't say anything more.

Nor did it need to.

With the Demon-Suppressing Bureau people appearing nearby.

Its two useless sons were likely already doomed.

An overwhelming killing intent erupted from its body.
