Chapter 28 – Sha Corpse

Bai Yu felt a surge of alertness. Could something have happened in the inner courtyard?

He grabbed a lantern and sprinted towards the inner courtyard.

But then he heard a "bang bang" sound coming from one of the morgues.

Many deceased, who wished to return to their roots but couldn't be transported back to their hometowns immediately, would have their bodies temporarily stored in the charity mortuary.

"Bang—"

The morgue door was slammed open, and a monster leaped out.

It was a shriveled corpse, its skin like rusted iron.

A Sha Corpse!

When a corpse is struck by Sha energy, it undergoes a mutation, turning into a Sha Corpse that harms people indiscriminately.

The Sha Corpse let out a hoarse roar and lunged at Bai Yu.

Its two withered claws, resembling chicken feet, aimed straight for Bai Yu's throat.

Bai Yu moved his feet, executing the Flying Swallow Void Walking Step.

He glided to the side like a swallow, dodging the Sha Corpse's claws.

He swept past, appearing at the side and rear of the Sha Corpse.

"White Tiger Attacks!"

He struck with his palm, the wind howling.

With a "bang," the Sha Corpse was sent flying, crashing to the ground.

But the Sha Corpse leaped up again, unscathed.

At this moment, Zhu Tong rushed over, draped in clothing, his face pale with shock:

"A Sha Corpse! The corpse has transformed with Sha energy!"

"Little Bai, run! This thing is imbued with Sha energy, impervious to blades and spears."

The Sha Corpse lunged at Bai Yu again, its ten fingernails growing over a foot long, ready to pierce Bai Yu.

Bai Yu used the Flying Swallow Void Walking Step, engaging the Sha Corpse in battle.

After a few moves, he had a sense of the situation.

The Sha Corpse's strength and speed were roughly equivalent to a first-rank martial artist.

But its body was impervious to blades and spears, comparable to a Stage Three Skin Tempering Realm martial artist.

Bai Yu used the Void Walking Step, making it impossible for the Sha Corpse to touch him.

Zhu Tong, watching Bai Yu not only not run but also engage in battle with the Sha Corpse, was anxious:

"Little Bai, don't be stubborn. This thing is imbued with Sha energy, tireless and immensely strong."

"Unless you have Uncle Jiu's demon-subduing methods, you can't handle it."

"How long have you been learning Zhuyou techniques? You don't have the ability, do you?"

Bai Yu smiled faintly:

"Don't worry, if Zhuyou techniques can't subdue demons, then I'll subdue them physically!"

He shouted, his arm muscles bulging like dragons.

"Ha!"

Bai Yu punched, hitting the Sha Corpse's chest.

With a crisp "crack," its chest caved in, several ribs broken.

The Sha Corpse tried to retaliate, but Bai Yu used the Orient Loong God Claw, dislocating one of its arms.

He continued his assault, breaking the Sha Corpse's limbs, and finally took out a Control Corpse Talisman, sticking it on the Sha Corpse's forehead.

The ferocious Sha Corpse instantly calmed down.

Bai Yu's fluid movements left Zhu Tong dumbfounded.

"Little Bai, you... you... actually subdued a Sha Corpse by yourself? And broke its bones."

Bai Yu chuckled:

"Yes, I recently broke through to a second-rank martial artist, and with my natural strength, I managed to defeat the Sha Corpse."

Now that he had become a fourth-rank martial artist, it was time to let some news slip out.

And Zhu Tong was the perfect person to spread the word.

He was always a big mouth, unable to keep secrets.

Once Zhu Tong knew something, it was as if the entire charity mortuary knew.

Bai Yu deliberately said:

"Brother Tong, please keep this a secret for me, don't let anyone else know."

Zhu Tong pounded his chest:

"Don't worry, I'm tight-lipped, I won't say a word."

Afterwards, the two dared not sleep again.

Bai Yu took out a stack of Sha-Transforming Talismans and Sha-Subduing Talismans, and together with Zhu Tong, they plastered the charity mortuary inside and out.

Half an hour later, Zhu Tong wiped his sweat and plopped down on a chair, muttering.

"So tired!"

"Little Bai, isn't it strange how this transformation with Sha energy happened out of nowhere?"

"My family has been working in the charity mortuary since my grandfather's time, for decades, and such transformations with Sha energy are rare."

Bai Yu had a premonition that something was wrong in River City.

He had noticed many people afflicted with Sha energy, then Uncle Jiu found more Sha Corpses, and now even the charity mortuary had a corpse transforming with Sha energy.

He was considering whether it was time to leave.

But other places might not be peaceful either, and he was reluctant to give up his position at the charity mortuary.

Bai Yu was undecided, so he said:

"Brother Tong, you should get some sleep, I'll keep watch here."

Zhu Tong didn't dare return to his room and slept in the front hall.

Bai Yu sat at the table, lighting a candle to read.

First, he read Spring and Autumn, then the Meng Family Herbal Classic, and finally, he reached for the White Fox Scandal Chronicles.

Such scandalous books needed a good critique.

Bai Yu critiqued it all night until dawn.

At that moment, Uncle Jiu came in from outside, seeing Bai Yu reading at the table, he nodded with satisfaction.

"Xiao Yu, what are you reading?"

Bai Yu, having stayed up all night, was a bit groggy and instinctively replied:

"I'm reading Spring and Autumn."

Uncle Jiu smiled slightly, ready to offer some encouragement, but when he walked over and saw the book, his expression changed immediately.

"Children shouldn't read these."

He snatched the White Fox Scandal Chronicles and confiscated it.

At this moment, Zhu Tong woke up and hurriedly approached:

"Uncle Jiu, you're finally back. You don't know, last night, the guest in room sixteen of the charity mortuary transformed with Sha energy."

"Thanks to Little Bai's bravery, he subdued the Sha Corpse, or we would have been in big trouble."

Uncle Jiu's expression changed abruptly, and he quickly walked into the inner hall.

He muttered to himself:

"It shouldn't be, I've plastered Yellow Talismans inside and out, it shouldn't have transformed with Sha energy."

When he saw the Sha Corpse subdued by the Control Corpse Talisman, he nodded with satisfaction.

It seemed Xiao Yu was born for this line of work, even mastering the Blood Talisman quickly.

Uncle Jiu plastered nine Yellow Talismans on the Sha Corpse.

Then he took out a jar, forming hand seals and chanting incantations.

Before long, the Sha Corpse spat out a mass of Sha energy, which fell into the jar.

"Alright, the Sha energy in this guest's body has been extracted, it's safe for now."

Next, Uncle Jiu took Bai Yu on a thorough inspection inside and out.

Sure enough, they found several corpses on the verge of transforming with Sha energy.

"A troublesome time, a troublesome time indeed."

Uncle Jiu's face was so dark it could drip water.

In the following days, he accelerated the teaching pace, eager to teach Bai Yu all the Zhuyou techniques at once.

Fortunately, Bai Yu, having endured nine years of compulsory education, had a strong ability to learn, and with his natural talent, he learned quickly.

His mastery of the Zhuyou Yin Talisman Scripture had reached a thorough understanding, and he continued to improve steadily.

Uncle Jiu was extremely pleased, repeatedly praising Bai Yu as having the potential of a burial emperor.

Meanwhile, the news of Bai Yu subduing the Sha Corpse spread like wildfire.

Zhu Tong told Little Wang:

"I'm telling you, Little Bai has become a second-rank martial artist and subdued a Sha Corpse!"

Little Wang told Old Zhang:

"Brother Bai is a second-rank martial artist, he caught a Sha Corpse a few days ago."

Soon, the entire Willow Street was abuzz.

The charity mortuary's Little Bai subdued a second-rank Sha Corpse.
