Chapter 39 – Tomato sauce on sale

After accurately stabbing Hooke's heart, little Newton, in a rare good mood, invited Xu Yun to eat a flatbread sandwich on the street.

Looking at the sign of the Yage Hotel not far away, Xu Yun chewed on the dry bread and couldn't help but feel a touch of emotion.

According to the normal historical trajectory, a historic fire would occur in London in 1666.

Due to its profound impact, historians even gave this fire a name, "Great Fire".

After this fire, Hooke showed great architectural talent and directly participated in the reconstruction of London. Therefore, it was not until the end of 1668 that he had time to challenge Barrow at Trinity College.

Barrow was at a loss for Hooke's questions and was ridiculed and humiliated by Hooke in front of a group of students. It even alarmed the president of Cambridge University.

As a result, Barrow fell seriously ill. After recovering, he resigned from the position of Lucas Professor in 1669 and nominated little Newton as the next Lucas Professor.

In the following years, Barrow gave up mathematics and devoted himself to the study of theology, resembling the meaning of cutting off worldly troubles in local martial arts novels.

Later, Barrow obtained a Doctor of Theology degree in 1670 and officially became the dean of Trinity College in 1672. In 1665, he was promoted to vice president of Cambridge University. Despite the impressive resume, it recognized Barrow's achievements in theology, not mathematics.

Starting from the end of 1673, Barrow had been bedridden and passed away in 1677.

No one can say for sure whether Barrow's premature death was directly related to Hooke's disruption, but one established fact is clear:

A top Lucas Professor retired early and turned from mathematics to theology.

It should be noted that at this time, Barrow had already obtained the product and quotient of two functions and the fundamental theorem of calculus, which was a height that little Newton could not reach at all.

In terms of research progress, he was actually the leading figure in calculus at this time!

Therefore, in some small circles, Barrow's evaluation was similar to that of a fallen star in The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, belonging to those who fell prematurely.

Now, with Xu Yun's appearance, little Newton coincidentally caused a disaster for his teacher, but also formed a grudge with Hooke. It is unclear whether this is good or bad.

...........

Twelve days passed in a flash, and it was already a new Sunday.

Grantham.

St. Theodore's Church.

Today, the entrance of the church was still crowded with people, and the deep and majestic hymns faintly emanated from the interior of the building. The momentum was even greater than when Xu Yun first came.

This was the second Sunday in November. According to the customs of the 17th century British Peninsula, every second Sunday of the month, a large trade fair would be held based on the fourth administrative district of the British Peninsula.

The trade fair started on Sunday afternoon and lasted until Monday afternoon, from two to three o'clock.

Therefore, the worship bell of the church would ring an hour earlier on this day, and the worship process would omit the communion, allowing everyone enough time to buy or sell things.

This kind of fair seemed to be spontaneously organized by the people, but it could not be separated from, and was impossible to be separated from, the support of the parish.

Therefore, in previous fairs, the church would also sell some holy books, portraits of saints, or drinks, and so on.

But at this moment, the stalls belonging to the Grantham parish were different from before:

There were no holy books, no portraits, only neatly arranged small clay pots on a table.

Behind the table, there were also four or five large pottery jars, with Xu Yun, little Newton, the William family, and several helpers in church attire standing beside them.

According to the agreement reached between Arlin and William.

The parish would expand the sale of tomato sauce to more than one-fifth of the East Midlands region, and Grantham was only a small part of the territory.

Considering that this non-religious business was somewhat inconsistent with the style of the church, Arlin entrusted the management of the fair booth to the William family.

The parish only arranged a few people to assist in data statistics and some material dispatch.

Mrs. William was wearing a cotton linen dress at this time, with a white headscarf wrapped around her head. She anxiously instructed Lisa and others:

"Lisa, check the position of the spoons again... Alula, check if the lids of the jars are properly closed... Andrea, where are the potatoes? Bring them out quickly!"

The venue of the fair was on a street next to the church, and the parish's stall was at the forefront of the street, which was the only entrance.

Coupled with the exclusive ownership of the cross sign, anyone who was not an interstellar player would see this stall as soon as they entered the street.

.....Tiffany Boli, who had just left the church, held her son Dino's hand, adjusted his slightly drafty scarf for him, and asked:

"Dino, tell Mom, did you listen carefully to today's Sunday school lesson?"

Eight-year-old Dino, hopping and skipping on the brick ground, cheerfully said:

"I did! Today's story was about Job. Hey, Mom, what's that?"

Tiffany Boli, who had been listening to Dino with a smile, turned her head subconsciously at his words and found that what Dino was pointing at was a stall at the entrance of the market.

She smiled and patted her son's head, saying:

"Oh, that's the church's stall. Let's go and take a look."

Tiffany Boli's husband was a tailor in the town of Grantham. Thanks to his exquisite craftsmanship, his income was not low, and the family basically did not worry about food and clothing, making them a middle-class family.

In August of this year, Tiffany Boli had just bought a portrait of the Apostle Peter at a meeting and hung it at home. Unexpectedly, a cat had recently entered their home and torn more than half of the portrait.

So, since the beginning of the month, she had been planning to buy a new portrait at the market.

Just as she led Dino to the stall, a male voice came to her ears:

"Hello, would you like some of our newly launched tomato sauce? Free tasting!"

"Tomato sauce?"

Looking at the strange young man with black hair and black eyes in front of her, Tiffany Boli swallowed the words she was about to say and asked curiously:

"What is that?"

The black-haired young man skillfully pushed a plate in front of her and took a small piece of potato cut into thin strips from the side:

"This is a new type of sauce from the East, made from non-toxic tomatoes. The Grantham Parish guarantees it. Look, here is a handwritten letter from Pastor Yarlin.

Limited quantity, sold out means sold out. You can taste it first before making a decision."

"Tomatoes?"

Hearing this term, a hint of hesitation appeared on Tiffany Boli's face.

In her understanding, tomatoes were a kind of poisonous food.

Then she looked at the Grantham Parish sign on the stall and the parish staff in church attire behind the stall. The trust brought by faith gradually overcame the impression brought by rumors.

The tailor's wife carefully picked up a potato strip, lightly dipped it in the tomato sauce, and took a bite.

A moment later, her eyes suddenly lit up:

"How much is this?"

Across from her, Xu Yun smiled at her and held up two fingers:

"10 ounces of tomato sauce, only 2 pennies!"
