Chapter 52 – Underworlders

"This..." Jiang Yuan didn't know how to comfort people, especially after Wei Zhenguo's words, he felt even more shocked.

Just as they had just solved the case of Ding Lan's disappearance, a body was discovered, and now Wei Zhenguo was saying that his wife was missing. It was easy for people to think in a negative direction.

Wei Zhenguo lit a cigarette and smoked, the smoke swirling around him, before saying, "I went on a business trip and when I came back, I couldn't find her. Her phone was unreachable and there was no news. Huang's team also helped search, but there was no result. The clues left behind... can't really be called clues... heh, let's ask forensic Jiang to take a look."

"Okay... sure." Jiang Yuan didn't dare to say what he could do. The wife of a detective had gone missing, and the bureau must have mobilized a great deal of effort to search for her, but they still couldn't find her. This was not a problem that could be solved by just talking big.

"Let's go, let's go to the hotel to sleep. We still have work to do tomorrow." Wei Zhenguo was just trying to ease his emotions and didn't expect Jiang Yuan to be able to help much. Jiang Yuan was an outstanding member of the forensic team in Ningtai County, but his expertise was not as apparent in Changyang City, where there were many technical experts in the city bureau and provincial department. Huang Qiangming had also requested their assistance before, but there were still no clues.

As a detective, Wei Zhenguo knew very well that some cases just couldn't be solved, and some cases that were solved were just due to luck.

In TV shows, when a case occurred, all the forces would gather together and go straight to the essence of the case... this was indeed the best procedure and way to solve a case. However, in reality, some cases were not immediately discovered, and even if they were, they wouldn't be immediately taken seriously. Even if they were taken seriously, there would often be various mistakes...

Even Wei Zhenguo himself, when he couldn't find his wife, didn't think about reporting it and preserving evidence at the first moment. Even as a detective, he wouldn't immediately think that a big case that would affect his entire family was about to happen.

Starting the car, Wei Zhenguo drove back to the hotel.

One by one, they all returned, although they had a lot to say, they all chose to sleep first.

Jiang Yuan was no exception, his mind still filled with thoughts, but he couldn't resist sleep. He slept until the next day before finally waking up.

The next day.

Noon.

The sun rose, shining brightly and warmly on everything.

In the small lobby of the small hotel, the crowd registering for check-in and check-out were mostly relaxed, with many still smiling, showing that they had a good night.

The small green plant on the small coffee table was also well taken care of, looking lush and green.

Several detectives who had just been shrouded in the shadow of society suddenly found themselves in the sunlight of society, feeling a little uncomfortable for a moment.

"It's like fighting in the underworld and then returning to the world." Mu Zhiyang held a bottle of energy drink and drank it with relish.

Wei Zhenguo stretched lazily and said, "We've only done a small job in the underworld."

"It seems so. We only caught Tan Yong."

"These kinds of ghostly things are too many to count." Wei Zhenguo sighed.Mu Zhiyang knew why his master was depressed and quickly asked, "By the way, did Tan Yong confess?"

Wei Zhenguo responded with a grunt and said, "Yes, I'll go see him later and hand over the case."

"Good, that's good." Everyone was quite happy. After all, staking out was hard work, and there was finally some progress.

The group chatted for a bit before leaving and finding a small restaurant to sit down in.

Jiang Yuan sat down and asked, "What was Tan Yong's motive for the crime? Was it because he couldn't win over Ding Lan or something else?"

Theft is never good, try looking at bit.ly/3iBfjkV.

This was an answer that the evidence couldn't provide, and Jiang Yuan was curious.

"It's about the same. Ding Lan likes good-looking guys...what Mu Zhiyang said...what was that word again?" Wei Zhenguo tapped his head, forgetting the word.

"Face dog," Mu Zhiyang added.

"Yes, that's it. She changes boyfriends quickly and probably has one-night stands often, but she only likes face dogs," Wei Zhenguo said.

Mu Zhiyang whispered, "Master, that's not how you use that word."

"Anyway, Tan Yong developed a crush on Ding Lan after seeing how frequently she changed boyfriends," Wei Zhenguo lit a cigarette and exhaled smoke. "According to his confession, he gave her a gift once, which was rejected, and then invited her to dinner, which was also rejected. Then, Tan Yong had other thoughts."

The other detectives saw Wei Zhenguo smoking and each reached out to take a cigarette...taking all the cigarettes in Wei Zhenguo's hand and smoking them.

Jiang Yuan silently took out a box of Zhonghua cigarettes from his pocket and placed it on the table. He didn't smoke, but he had money.

Mu Zhiyang tore open Jiang Yuan's Zhonghua without hesitation and handed one to Wei Zhenguo, saying, "Master, please continue."

"In the end, Tan Yong met Ding Lan on the street, stopped her, and after a disagreement, he beat her. Later, he forced her into his car," Wei Zhenguo sighed. "Tan Yong said he originally planned to scare her by leaving her by the side of the highway, but he couldn't resist and ended up raping her."

Everyone listened in silence, without any comments.

"That apartment was originally a house that Tan Yong acquired through shady means, but due to restrictions on property purchases, it was registered under a distant relative's name from his village. He brought Ding Lan there and initially planned to bury her there, but later...according to reports, it was at Ding Lan's pleading that he decided to dig a basement, which Ding Lan helped him with," Wei Zhenguo shook his head. "After that, the three women were all prostitutes, including the dead one, who Tan Yong lured to the basement to play with. If we hadn't caught him this time, he might have kidnapped more people and expanded the basement."

"Did Tan Yong kill the dead woman because she didn't listen?" Mu Zhiyang asked.

"Tan Yong doesn't admit it. He only said that he went there one day and saw that she was dead. He didn't ask any further questions and couldn't get any answers. But this answer may not hold up," Wei Zhenguo said.

Mu Zhiyang sneered, "If he says he didn't kill her, then he didn't kill her? There's evidence of him all over the basement.""They definitely want to make it an ironclad case, getting a confession is still very important. Of course, Tan Yong doesn't admit it, mainly because he doesn't want to die." Wei Zhenguo took a deep drag on his cigarette.

On this land, a confession has always been more important than physical evidence, especially outside the judicial system. When a murderer keeps repeating "I am innocent", even if all the evidence points to him, to many people, convicting him, especially to the death penalty, is still not perfect.

For the detectives, getting a confession and making the suspect admit their guilt is also a crucial part, and they are inclined to do so as long as they can achieve it.

Mu Zhiyang sneered and said, "He still won't die like this?"

"Who knows. But if he can get away from the murder, there is a greater chance of getting a suspended death sentence." Wei Zhenguo said, then saw the food coming and waved his hand, "Let's eat, let's not talk about them. I heard that the provincial department is also sending someone over, we need to tidy up and go back."

"The provincial department?" Jiang Yuan was a little puzzled.

The name of the provincial department sounded big, but in fact, there are not many personnel. For general homicide cases, the provincial department does not get involved. Of course, this case has a significant impact, but it is almost over, and the remaining investigation process is at best a chicken rib.

Unless...

Jiang Yuan guessed, "Did they find something new during the interrogation?"

"Maybe." Wei Zhenguo agreed and said, "It's impossible for people in the underworld to always follow the rules."
