Chapter 54 – Trace evidence

Early morning.

Jiang Yuan woke up from bed, full of energy and relaxed, feeling as if he hadn't participated in the special investigation team.

In fact, there was no role for him to play.

As a forensic scientist, the city bureau had experienced old forensic scientists who wore masks even when dealing with green corpses on the scene, as well as diligent doctoral forensic scientists who could perform one autopsy every two weeks.

As for the criminal police, the city's criminal police detachment had plenty of talented individuals who had solved major cases, as well as rough and tough guys who were like social butterflies.

Jiang Yuan and his colleagues from Ningtai County were not treated as valuable assets, but rather taken care of by the team leader. They knew that after squatting for so many days, they were given a few days of rest.

Woo woo woo...

Wei Zhenguo called, shouting, "Come down and have breakfast. The doughnut shop at the entrance."

Jiang Yuan smiled bitterly, turned over and got up.

After solving the case, the new place they moved to had greatly improved accommodation conditions. In the past, when criminal police officers were on business trips, they mostly stayed in double rooms or budget hotels. This time, Wei Zhenguo had booked single rooms for everyone, and the hotel was not wherever was cheapest. At least it showed that after the case was upgraded to a special investigation team, their funding had increased.

Downstairs, the most lively place was the doughnut shop.

In the boiling hot oil, the rolling noodles kept stretching and expanding, constantly moving their arms and legs. In just a few seconds, their volume had increased several times larger than the original dough. The hot oil was like a rising desire, using the most intense means to make the two pieces of sticky dough expand, change color, become fragrant, and lose moisture, stickiness, and the original appearance of flour.

"Three doughnuts, a bowl of tofu pudding, a bowl of soy milk. And a side dish, add an egg." Jiang Yuan rubbed his stomach and ordered a lot of food for himself.

Wei Zhenguo drank soy milk and said with a click of his tongue, "Youth is really great. I can't eat that much anymore."

"Anyway, there's nothing to do." Jiang Yuan paused and asked, "By the way, can I go do an autopsy?"

"It's already turned into bones." Wei Zhenguo looked at Jiang Yuan and said, "Captain Yu's team definitely still believes in their own forensic scientist. Even if you do it, they won't recognize it."

"I can do bones now." Jiang Yuan had just acquired the forensic anthropology LV3 skill, so he would definitely be fine in the field.

Wei Zhenguo advised, "It's still better not to go. If you go, you'll just be assisting their forensic scientist, and if something goes wrong, it'll be easy to take the blame."

Mu Zhiyang next to him said, "It's not our own cattle, so we don't feel bad using them. Besides, they don't know you."

"That's right, when I was seconded here before, they used me really harshly." The criminal police officer who came with them, Wen Ming, also felt emotional. Although everyone was being used like cattle, using their own cattle was obviously more careful.

Jiang Yuan could only lower his head and drink soy milk.

In Ningtai County, his strength was clearly stronger than his colleagues, but in a provincial capital city like Changyang, that was not necessarily the case. Therefore, there was no need to rush to do an autopsy.

Several criminal police officers ate breakfast quietly, and in a trance, they tasted a hint of the good old days.

"I want to follow their on-site investigation and see the evidence." After finishing his soy milk, Jiang Yuan had a new idea and said, "I don't think Director Liu has made any arrangements. Can we do it ourselves?""Sure, we can do it." Wei Zhenguo asked in confusion, "What do you want to do?"

Jiang Yuan thought for a moment and said, "I want to see Tan Yong's car."

"His car? Do you want to find out where he might have been by looking at his car?" Wei Zhenguo immediately understood the reason, but he didn't think it was a good idea. "The Criminal Investigation Brigade in Changyang City must have thoroughly checked the car."

"That's even better. We can check again without affecting their investigation." So far, Tan Yong still had no intention of confessing. Therefore, relying on the existing evidence to investigate was the most direct approach.

And LV4's crime scene investigation skill was also Jiang Yuan's strongest skill.

By investigating Tan Yong's car, Jiang Yuan could find more clues. Solving the case was a possibility, and the more clues they found, the closer they would be to solving the case.

Wei Zhenguo thought for a moment and nodded, "Then I'll accompany you to the scene investigation."

...

Two hours later.

Jiang Yuan, Wei Zhenguo, and Mu Zhiyang were standing in front of Tan Yong's Pajero.

Cao Zhouquan, the captain of the scene investigation team, answered the phone and had a good impression of Jiang Yuan. He greeted them with a traditional smile and joked, "Are you guys not satisfied? We have thoroughly checked Tan Yong's car, and it's impossible to leave it untouched."

Jiang Yuan stood outside the basement cell and restrained himself from going in. This matter had been bothering Cao Zhouquan for two days, and that was what he was saying now.

Wei Zhenguo chuckled and said, "Our Little Jiang has some ideas. Don't think too much about it, Captain Cao."

"It's okay. If you want to do it again, I have no objection. Besides, you left us such a big basement. There's no harm in checking the car again." Cao Zhouquan was also generous in his approach. After speaking, he shouted, "Du Lei!"

Then he turned around and introduced, "Du Lei was the one who cleaned Tan Yong's car before. He'll do it with you this time."

Although Cao Zhouquan said he didn't mind, he was still a little bit concerned, so he called his trusted subordinate.

To clean up evidence in a murder case in a place like Changyang City, they had to be skilled.

Beep beep beep.

A balancing vehicle slid directly in front of Jiang Yuan.

"Du Lei." Du Qiang, dressed in police uniform, stood on the balancing vehicle. He had a thin and long waist that looked like it could be broken with one kick.

"Little Jiang and his team want to clean Tan Yong's car again. You'll go with them," Cao Zhouquan said directly.

Du Lei frowned and looked at Jiang Yuan and the others. "Most of it has been dismantled, and even the wheel arch covers have been removed..."

"I want to look for trace evidence." Jiang Yuan didn't hide his intentions and gestured while speaking. "Because this car drove on a rough road, it's more likely to leave debris, pollen, or hair and feathers from the crime scene inside. If we take it apart, we might find something."

This was where his LV4 crime scene investigation skill came in handy.

Jiang Yuan sounded confident, and most importantly, what he said made sense.

Cao Zhouquan was a little surprised and asked, "Does your bureau have a trace evidence laboratory?"The laboratories in the criminal science department are relatively simple, many of which are at the level of high school chemistry labs. Usually, only the DNA lab is more expensive.

The construction of laboratories is related to the needs and personnel of the unit. It can be said that many laboratories are built based on the personnel. For example, the drug testing laboratory in Ningtai County was built not only because there was a need for drug testing, but also because Lu Jianfeng, the captain of the criminal science team, had the ability in this area.

Cao Zhouquan was also shocked when he heard Jiang Yuan's confident mention of the trace evidence laboratory. This thing is really expensive.

Jiang Yuan shook his head at Cao Zhouquan and said, "There is no trace evidence laboratory in Ningtai County."

Cao Zhouquan, a calm and traditional handsome guy, was amused by this and said, "If there's none, why did you mention it?"

"We can use the one in Changyang City. Or send it to the trace evidence laboratory at the provincial department." Jiang Yuan said.

"The one in the city is just as mediocre. The trace evidence laboratory is complex, expensive, and has a lot of equipment. The one at the provincial department is also not that great." Cao Zhouquan shook his head and said, "So I say there's no need to dismantle it further. It's not worth the effort and won't get us anything."

"Whether it works or not depends mainly on the extraction. There is a lot of room for error in laboratory operations." At this point, Jiang Yuan was no longer modest and emphasized again, "As long as we extract something, we have a chance to get it done in any laboratory."

"Okay." Cao Zhouquan had nothing to say and simply agreed. After all, he was not the one doing the work.
