Chapter 25 – The call in the morgue

"When you get out of the hospital and recover from your injuries, let's sit down and have a good chat. I'll tell you everything you want to know."

"Okay, Grandpa."

Karun didn't refuse. There was no need to be afraid or refuse anything at this point.

If he had not seen Mr. Mosang dancing, if he had not seen Mrs. Xius possessed by a demon, if he had not seen Alfred and Lady Molly standing in front of him, and if he had not been stabbed by his grandfather himself, everything could continue to run smoothly with tacit understanding.

But at this point, it was no longer appropriate to deceive oneself.

Covering his ears and eyes, pretending that everything was still peaceful and quiet, was as foolish as when Sheriff Duke called himself to say he had found the real culprit, but didn't say who it was and invited him to meet somewhere. When he arrived there, he found that Sheriff Duke had already been killed by the culprit.

This was simply an insult to intelligence.

"Take good care of yourself. Don't worry about things at home," said Dis.

"Okay, Grandpa."

Dis turned around and left the ward. Puerh planned to leave with him, but when she tried to slip out through the door, she was kicked back by a heel.

"Bang!"

Puerh somersaulted and the ward door was closed.

Then, Puerh looked up at Karun lying on the hospital bed. Karun ignored her and picked up the book "I Bound Your Heart" borrowed from the nurse to continue reading.

The story in the book was about a commoner girl who was loved by a prince of the Wein royal family. They broke through the barriers of society and got married. After that, it was a series of stories about the girl facing the royal family and upper class society.

The plot of the story was somewhat cliché in Karun's eyes, but he could learn a lot about the social structure of Wein from it.

To some extent, Rulun was like a vassal state of Wein, or a "protected state". Not only were their economies closely linked, but culturally, they were almost identical. In the eyes of Rulun's elites, Wein was the real stage they aspired to.

Puerh jumped onto the accompanying chair and curled up, pretending to fall asleep.

When he felt sleepy, Karun put down the book and turned off the light.

Sleep...

...

In the middle of the night;

Another hospital;

Ward;

Mr. Hofen, who was sleeping, slowly opened his eyes. A familiar figure appeared by his bedside.

The nurse on the next bed was still sleeping soundly and had not noticed the visitor.

"I stabbed him," said Dis.

Mr. Hofen laughed and said, "He definitely didn't die."

"That's right.""If you kill him, according to your personality, you would only say that he died, instead of telling me what you used and did."

"I can't do it," Dis said.

"Dis, I helped you prepare for the God Summoning Ceremony. We both know the level of the ceremony. We failed because we didn't summon the true soul of Karun. He is not Karun. I was certain from the first time I saw him!"

"I know."

"He's not your grandson anymore, Dis. You should be clear-headed. I have cancer and don't have much time left, so I'm willing to help you, old friend. I know how much family means to you. But with a ceremony of such high level, if we didn't summon Karun's soul, then he is likely an evil god! He may still be weak because he just arrived and needs time to recover. But you should understand that once an evil god recovers, he will cause terrible turmoil! You should kill him, Dis."

"I can't do it."

"Why?"

"Because... he calls me grandpa."

"Dis, do you know how much disaster your kindness will bring to others in the future?"

Dis fell silent.

Then, Dis laughed and said, "People outside don't call me grandpa."

...

Karun woke up to a bright day. He pressed the button, and soon, Nurse Mayna walked in, smiling and asking, "Karun, is the book good?"

"It's an interesting story."

"I thought only us girls like to read this kind of story."

"Boys like it too, because it helps us understand girls better."

"You're really funny."

Mayna helped Karun up and put on his clothes. With her support, Karun went to the independent bathroom in his hospital room to wash up. After finishing, she served him breakfast, which was corn porridge with a few types of fruit.

Karun didn't really like the combination of fruit and main meals, even if it was healthy and nutritious.

"Can I help you take a walk?"

"Can I?" Karun asked.

He wasn't asking if it was within Mayna's service range, but whether his injury allowed it.

"You can. The doctor said the main reason you fainted was due to excessive blood loss..."

Mayna reached out and touched Karun's chest.

Hmm, even though the wound was on the other side...

"Appropriate exercise can help you recover faster."

"Thank you."

With Mayna's company, Karun left the hospital room. Conveniently, the room was on the first floor.Walking outside, breathing fresh air and basking in the sunshine, people probably only realize the importance of health at this moment. Of course, soon they will return to the cycle of destroying their health again.

"How old are you?" Karun asked Tina.

"Seventeen, just graduated from the medical school. I know you're fifteen, so I'm older than you."

In Rui Lan, fifteen is the "age of majority". Generally speaking, if you don't continue studying after turning fifteen, you can start working. Children from families with poor conditions may start working even earlier.

Although Rui Lan has strict laws prohibiting the employment of child labor (under fifteen years old), the factory owners do not hire child labor, but rather disposable machine parts.

Anyway, since awakening, through Karun's understanding, this is a society with a large gap between the rich and the poor.

The gap is not only between the Inmores and the Adams, but also between the true bottom level who struggle to make ends meet every day and may have difficulty even feeding their families.

Karun used to measure income by the monthly salary of ordinary workers, which is 2000 Lu coins, based on the income of workers in large factories. In fact, many workers in small workshops earn less than 40 Lu coins a day, and the wages of foreign illegal workers are even lower.

This class of people is actually very large, but Karun cannot come into contact with them because the clients of the Inmores are at least middle class, and even if they are the welfare recipients that Aunt Mary has been complaining about, they must first have a clear and accurate local household registration.

"I know your family," Mina said.

"Oh?"

"Inmores. My aunt's funeral was held at your house when she passed away, but I didn't see you that day."

"That's unfortunate, I missed it."

"You are really interesting. I don't even have a boyfriend yet."

Karun blinked and realized that Mina misunderstood his meaning.

After walking for a while, Karun felt sweat on his forehead. Mina supported him to sit on a bench and took out a handkerchief to carefully wipe his sweat.

Her every frown and smile actually carried a deliberate performance.

This is not a "pejorative term". Regardless of gender, when encountering the opposite sex they like, everyone will deliberately show their better side.

"What do you usually like to do?" Mina asked.

"I like to help my family with things, like helping my aunt wipe the bodies."

"..." Mina.

At this time, Karun saw three familiar figures ahead.

Uncle Mason, Paul, and Ron.

Uncle Mason walked ahead with his hands in his pockets;

Paul and Ron each carried a stretcher.

"Uncle!"

Karun shouted.

"Oh, Karun." Uncle Mason smiled and walked over. "I was planning to go to your ward to see you."

"Young master Karun."

"Young master looks like he's recovering well."

"What is it, Uncle?""Oh, when I came to the hospital to see you the day before yesterday, you were unconscious, so I had afternoon tea with the head of the hospital's inpatient department. That's why I came today."

Uncle Mason gave Karun a knowing look.

Karun smiled and nodded.

"I'll go first, I'll come back to see you this afternoon."

"Okay, Uncle."

It must be that business is more important. This hospital is in Murdoch District, quite far from Mingke Street, and it used to be outside the range of the Inmores' "business influence." So taking advantage of this opportunity, it can be considered as expanding the family's business influence.

But this guest definitely needs to be "picked up" and taken home quickly, otherwise the local funeral home is likely to come and steal the "client."

"Is he your uncle?" Mina asked.

"Yes."

"Everyone in your family is very handsome."

"Thank you."

This wasn't just flattery from Mina. Although Uncle Mason is old now and can't compare with young men in terms of physique, even now, his image is still worthy of being called "distinguished," and more fitting for a man of his age to be called "handsome."

From a middle-class housewife who fell to doing makeup for corpses, Aunt Mary still stood by Uncle Mason. This must be love, but love needs to be put into action.

If life isn't going well, you still have to make yourself look good. If you're ugly, what's the point?

"Of course, you're also very handsome," Mina said.

"Thank you."

Karun was already immune to this kind of "praise," which was equivalent to saying that the weather was good today.

"Can I ask you a personal question?" Mina asked.

"Uh, of course."

"How much is your monthly expenditure?"

"It's enough, but I don't know the exact amount." Karun remembered that he had officially become a member of the family and could enjoy dividends, so he didn't know how much he earned each month.

"I only have 1,200 lu coins a month," Mina said. "Just enough to get by, and there's not much left."

"Is it that low?"

"If the benefits are better, the salary will increase with seniority," Mina explained, "but I don't really like being a nurse. I'm happy to take care of you, but sometimes I have to take care of some old ladies with bad tempers and some old men who like to take advantage."

"Breathing patients are always troublesome."

"Yes." Mina's eyes widened. "Um..."

Actually, this little girl was quite interesting. Karun didn't dislike her. She was very frank and sincere.

Even if he excluded his appearance factor, the background of the Inmores could give him a lot of confidence in the marriage market. The negative influence of the funeral home and others was not worth mentioning in front of the lu coins.

But Karun hadn't planned to get married and have children here yet. One was that he still felt young, and two, he still had bigger problems to deal with.

"Let's go back, I want to lie down for a while.""大哥,你是秩序之神,我是混沌之魔,我们不是一路人."

Translation:

"Okay, let me help you up."

With Mina's support, Karun returned to the hospital building. As they approached the door to his ward, the head nurse shouted towards them:

"Mina, come over here and take this plasma to the operating room quickly. They are short on staff over there."

"You go ahead, I can go back and lie down," Karun said.

"Okay."

Karun stood at the door of his ward and took a deep breath.

For some reason, he felt that the smell of disinfectant in the ward was much stronger than outside.

However, just as Karun stepped into the ward, he suddenly heard a rustling sound in his ear:

"My money... my money... my money..."

Karun froze in place.

This feeling reminded him of when he heard Mr. Mosang sobbing in the basement at home.

"My money... my money... my money..."

The voice continued.

Karun ignored it, entered the ward, lay back on the bed, and picked up his novel, ready to continue reading.

"Meow..."

Puerh jumped onto the bed and looked at him.

"My money... my money... my money..."

The damn voice inexplicably became louder, as if an old lady was lying under his bed, constantly chattering.

Karun put down the book and covered his ears with both hands.

The voice still persisted.

This voice was not heard.

"Meow..."

Puerh called again.

Karun reached out and grabbed Puerh in front of him, letting her belly face him.

The previously aloof Puerh became uncomfortable after being placed in this position, and even a little shy.

"Is it you who's causing this?"

Puerh shook her head and her tail covered her abdomen.

"It must be you who's causing this."

"Meow!"

Puerh shook her head again, denying it.

"Then what's going on in my ear?"

"Meow, meow meow, meow meow meow, meow."

Karun nodded thoughtfully and responded:

"Meow meow meow, meow."

"...?" Puerh looked confused.

"You really can't talk?" Karun asked.

"Meow."

"Lady Molly can talk, why can't you?"

"Meow."

Karun didn't believe it. In fact, he could understand Mrs. Xiu's transformation, but Lady Molly had brought him too much shock. In the face of this shock, Puerh, who had always had a humanoid expression, not being able to speak like a human being seemed somewhat unreasonable.

"You can't even speak, so when I get out of the hospital, I'll find a male cat to mate with you."

"Meow..."

"I swear in the name of the God of Order."

The God of Order was something Karun learned from Piajie, but he remembered that on that night, Alfred called Dis like this:

"Big brother, you are the God of Order, and I am the Demon of Chaos. We are not on the same side.""Is this judge of the Order of the Gods your follower?"

So Dis's position was this.

Sure enough...

When Pu'er heard Karun swear in the name of the "God of Order", she was completely panicked.

Karun was a staunch materialist at heart. Materialists never resisted or denied the existence of the supernatural. If a supernatural entity appeared in front of them, they would redefine and study it and place it within the objective realm of materialism.

In simpler terms, Karun was not feudalistic, let alone superstitious.

But Pu'er was clear that if Dis found out that his grandson had sworn in the name of the "God of Order", he might really get her a male cat to fulfill this oath for his grandson.

"It's not my doing."

A crisp female voice;

It also had a bit of a mature woman's tone;

Hmm...

It sounded pretty good.

Karun stared at Pu'er,

And Pu'er looked at Karun.

Karun released his hands and Pu'er pressed her abdomen against the blanket.

"So you really can talk."

"You are shameless, the most shameless and despicable human being I have ever met. I have never heard of any human threatening a cat with their chastity!"

"I have never heard of any cat caring about its chastity."

"They care, it's just that humans don't care about the feelings of cats!"

"Okay, okay."

Karun closed his eyes and pondered for a moment, then opened them again and looked at Pu'er, asking:

"So, what's the deal with the voice in my ear?"

"That's something I'm curious about too. You haven't even undergone purification, so why can you hear that voice?"

"Purification?" Karun caught onto the word. "Is it like receiving baptism?"

"That's a lie, just psychological comfort."

"Oh?"

"Real purification means using the breath of the holy artifact to cleanse and give you higher sensitivity, allowing you to see things that ordinary people can't see.

Of course, there are many kinds of purification, and purification is not only done through holy artifacts. It's just that using the church's holy artifacts is the safest and most reliable way. If an ordinary person comes into contact with a demon and doesn't die, there is also a chance to complete purification, but there is also a chance of becoming a mentally ill patient."

"What I'm hearing now is, 'my money, my money.'"

"I hear it too."

"Who's shouting?"

"The basement of the hospital is the morgue, and your ward is just above the morgue, separated by only one layer of concrete. Some corpses with strong obsessions can emit similar calls."

"Demon?""It has nothing to do with demons. Demons refer to supernatural beings with basic intelligence, like the Mrs. Jasmine you mentioned earlier. She belongs to the demon category. As for Alfred, who stood by your side that night, he can be considered a powerful demon, able to negotiate with regional judges or grassroots leaders of other churches to keep the peace."

"You still haven't answered my previous question. Why can I hear it?"

"I don't know!"

"Is it related to the original Karun?"

"You finally admit it, you are not the real Karun!"

Puerh raised her tail, with an expression of "you finally slipped up."

"Yeah, I'm not Karun. Go tell Dis if you want."

Puerh heard this and helplessly crawled back down, complaining, "Dis just cares too much about family. It's the tradition of the Inmores family. The family motto is: family is everything."

"It seems like you've been telling on me a lot." Karun continued to ask, "I ask you, is it related to the original Karun?"

"The original Karun?" Puerh scratched her paw and said indifferently, "The original Karun was just an autistic fool."

"I believe you never said that to Dis before."

"That's right." Puerh smiled, "After all, even fools are his family."

Puerh stood up, stretched her front paws and back paws, and yawned, saying:

"Since Karun's parents died, Dis never planned to let the family continue down the same path of purification. So, the original 'Karun' was just an ordinary person, and he never had any abnormal reactions.

All the abnormalities started after you woke up.

But actually, you don't have to feel confused. Although you haven't experienced purification, your existence...in my eyes, is that of a demon.

I still think that your purity is just an act, but Dis falls for it.

Deep down in your soul, there must be violence and cruelty hidden, am I right?"

"Meow!"

Karun grabbed Puerh's tail and turned it in a different direction.

"I want to ask you now, how can I turn off or...block this damn voice?"

"Just close off your perception in this area, it's simple."

"How do I do that specifically?"

"Close your eyes, first capture that voice, make it clearer in your mind, and then follow it down, sensing and exploring all the way..."

"I've decided that on the day I'm discharged, I'll have Lunt go to the pet market and buy three of the most irritable male cats, and lock all four of you in the bathroom."

"Oh, you're really an animal."

"Just give me a solution.""There's no way. You haven't experienced purification, so everything you 'hear' and 'see' is based on instinct. You don't even know how to manage and use your own perception.

It's like asking me to teach you how to drive a car when you've never even seen one. Can you do it?

But usually, if you endure for a while, she'll stop calling. She doesn't have the ability to call for too long anyway."

"Like a cat in heat?"

"Oh, that damn malignant analogy full of racial discrimination."

Karun put down Puerh and lay down, preparing to meditate.

"My money... my money... my money..."

With his eyes closed, Karun said, "She's still calling."

Puerh, who was lying on Karun's stomach, said indifferently, "It's just that she can call a little longer than a normal corpse with obsession. She should be out of energy soon."

"My money... my money..."

Karun could only continue to endure.

Then...

"Squeak..."

"I seem to hear other sounds," Karun said.

"It's normal," Puerh waved her paw. "When will lunch arrive? You can order something. Just order a small fried fish for me in advance."

"Shh... shh..."

"I seem to hear the sound of shoes dragging on the ground."

"That's the sound of nurses and patients walking outside," Puerh said. "Also, get me another pudding."

"Click..."

"The sound of a door opening..."

"The neighbor just opened the door."

In Karun's ear, the sound continued to come:

"Hey, why are you here, old lady?"

"My money... my money fell..."

"If you lost something, you should go to the front desk to report it. This is the morgue. How could anything fall here?"

"My money... my money..."

"Old lady, which ward are you in? I'll take you back."

"My money... my money..."

"Okay, okay, I took your money. I'll give it back to you when we get back to the ward. You're a patient in the psychiatric ward, right? The psychiatric ward should be..."

"You took my money!!!"

"Ahhhh!!!"

Karun suddenly opened his eyes and sat up.

"I still want a glass of goat milk... oh, meow!"

Puerh was overturned under the bed, glaring at Karun angrily.

Karun turned his head, looked at Puerh under the bed, swallowed his saliva, and said, "She... killed someone."
