Chapter 404 – Infiltrating smile

The black figure was targeted.

There was no way to capture it alive, no way to interrogate it, and not even a moment's delay.

One reason was that this thing was more elusive than the slipperiest eel in the world. If they were not careful, it could return to its hidden state.

The other reason was that Richard was still bleeding.

Other than Richard, only Karun and Memphis knew that Richard had swallowed a worm bred by Phileas, which gave him a healing ability beyond that of ordinary bloodthirsty demons. But the others were unaware of this.

And one of the two who knew was Richard's father.

So everyone only knew that this opportunity to capture the creature was created by their teammate (son) at the cost of spitting blood, so their faith was unified.

In an instant, the black figure was incinerated.

In its place, a small pile of ashes fell.

Karun walked towards the ashes, while Philomina went to Richard.

Blanche instinctively wanted to look at the ashes, but immediately realized her role as the team's "doctor." After taking a few steps forward, she turned around, her tall figure moving as if in a dance.

Then, as she ran towards Richard, she began to concentrate on a healing spell in the palm of her hand, while Philomina helped Richard sit up, and Blanche immediately began to treat him.

Karun raised his hand, signaling the others not to approach, because this thing could potentially become a source of infection.

Everyone stopped in their tracks, and it was only then that they realized they needed to check on their teammate and show their concern, so most of them walked towards Richard.

Beside the ashes, only Alfred and Memphis remained by Karun's side.

Alfred looked at Memphis, puzzled.

Memphis whispered, "He won't die."

He knew how much Richard could endure and how much blood he could spit out under extreme conditions. This was also a kind of "like father, like son."

Karun smiled. He knew that Uncle Eisen was not used to expressing concern for his son in front of so many people.

Bending down, Karun was not particularly worried about contamination, although the feeling of being contaminated was very painful.

He reached out and gently brushed the ashes.

Karun joked, "Even if you add a lot of gasoline to the cremator, you can't burn a person this pure."

"Young master?"

"Confirmed, no contamination."

After receiving Karun's reply, Alfred and Memphis both crouched down in front of the ashes.

Alfred asked in confusion, "It's hard to imagine that such a thing could be burned to ashes."

Memphis said, "I think his body was affected by some kind of presence, allowing him to switch between states of existence. Essentially, he is still a form of life, not a thought or a soul."

"The young master suspects that it is the mercy of the goddess, oh, it's the goddess's nightgown. Here, it is very likely that we can find the corner of that artifact."

Memphis nodded and said, "To have such a strange thing appear, the value of this tomb is definitely not small. I just don't know if there are any dangers inside."

"If we don't move forward, how will we know?" Alfred said. "Since this thing has been resolved and Richard's problem is not serious, how can we possibly leave? Even if these ashes are as pure white as they can be, they won't fetch a good price."

"There's something."

Upon hearing Karun's voice, the two immediately looked at the pile of ashes that Karun had scraped to the bottom, and saw Karun pull out a wine-red pen from inside.

The pen felt icy cold in his hand, like holding a piece of ice, but Karun's ancestral power sensed the heat inside the pen.

Reaching out, he removed the cap, and a red beam of light shot out, like solidified lava, but it was indeed dynamic.

"Did they have pens in that era?" Karun asked.

Memphis pointed to the pen and said, "Captain, the pen body is made of a special material."

"Oh, I see."

Karun used the cap to cover the end of the lava, and it slowly retracted into the pen, finally successfully capping it.

With a flick of his hand, Karun threw the pen to Alfred, who caught it steadily.

"Put it away for now, and report the price on the black market when we get back. If you like it, keep it. As for how to distribute it, figure it out yourself."

"Yes, young master."

Karun stood up and walked towards Richard, who had already sat there drinking water after receiving initial treatment.

"How are you?" Karun asked with concern.

Richard raised the water bag and shook it casually, saying, "No big deal."

Karun smiled and said to Memphis, "You're responsible for helping him continue forward."

"I'll do it," Philomina suddenly spoke up.

Karun looked at Philomina.

Memphis said, "Okay, you do it."

Since even the father was willing to entrust his son to this woman, Karun naturally would not object any further. Instead, he ordered everyone, "Everyone, rest in place for half an hour."

The next half hour was a time for rest, for everyone to eat and replenish their strength, but mainly to relieve the tension from earlier.

After about the right amount of time, the team regrouped.Ahead is a "floating" coffin, but it is unknown if there is also a platform leading to another place on the other side of the abyss.

However, Karun's gaze has always been focused on practical matters.

"Open the coffin!"

Let's open a few coffins first. If there are plenty of burial goods inside, then we can leave with enough burial goods, and we can temporarily put aside the secrets in the deeper areas.

Anyway, the tomb is right here. We can come back later to continue taking things when we have time.

And if the burial goods are not abundant, in case the Kangjes family advocates frugal burials, then we can only continue to explore for truly valuable things.

Mengfei and Muri turned into black mist, floated to both sides of a coffin with two ropes, tied them up, and then Wintour turned into a giant and, with Bart, Alfred, and others, exerted force to drag the coffin onto the platform.

The bottom of these coffins is supported by silk threads, like a string with many strands of pearls.

This is also the reason why Karun believes that there should be a platform on the other side, a bridge... it can't just be one end.

"Clang!"

The coffin landed.

Blanchard asked, "Captain, do you need me to say a prayer first?"

This is a tradition.

"No need. There are so many coffins here. If we say a prayer for each one, we'll have to prepare to spend the winter here."

Blanchard smiled, turned to face the direction of the abyss, and began to say a collective prayer.

"Mas, is the formation ready?"

"Ready, Captain!"

The position where the coffin landed is where Mas arranged the purification formation.

Karun walked forward to observe the coffin at close range and found the position of the coffin clasp. It was a coffin sealed with a block embedded in it, which is now very popular.

Taking out the Sword of Achilles, Karun began to pry open the lock clasp.

On the other side, Alfred and Muri also helped to pry open the eight lock clasps, which didn't take much time.

When opening the coffin, Karun gestured for everyone to step back a bit.

"The captain is always on the most dangerous front line," Aisley said.

Blanchard nodded, "Yes."

Karun exerted force with both arms and pushed the coffin lid open. There was no flying dust and unbearable stench as imagined, nor did a hairy body suddenly sit up and roar and reach out with claws to grab you...

Because the coffin was empty.

Karun pursed his lips, bent down, and checked inside the coffin. At the tailgate position, he found a few small dents.

"Are these coffins just decorations?" Muri asked in confusion.

"No, the bodies were transported in the coffins," Karun straightened up and pointed to the end of the coffin, "There are also traces of shoe soles hitting the end, which should have been caused by collisions during long-distance transportation."

"After the bodies were brought in, were they taken out of the coffins?" Memphis reached out and touched the coffin lid, "What was the purpose?"

"It's not clear yet, but I think there must have been a purpose in bringing them in. It was also mentioned in the letter left here by Preston. He found that this is not just a Kangjes tomb in the pure sense."

"Memphis, Muri, go and bring a couple more coffins over for us to check."

"Yes, Captain."

Using the same method as before, two more coffins were quickly dragged over.

After opening the coffins, they were all empty, with no burial goods or bodies inside.

But there were clear traces of the presence of bodies. One of the coffins had bloodstains on the inside of the head, which should have been caused by carelessness during transportation, causing the body's head to bump and scrape.

Three coffins in a row were opened, and all were empty.

"Muri, you and I will go ahead and investigate."

"Yes, Captain."

Karun and Muri took the lead to explore, turning into black mist and floating over.

The distance was long, and there were many coffins. In the ancestral tomb of the Allen Manor, only the patriarchs of the generations and the prominent figures of that generation were eligible for burial. It seemed that the Kangjes family had been burying their deceased relatives here for a long period of time.

Karun couldn't help but sneer in his heart. No wonder the family declined. Everyone had such a high-profile "sea burial," and even the richest family would be emptied.

Finally, a new platform appeared ahead.

Karun and Muri landed on the platform and looked back, only to see the abyss and the "floating" coffins behind them, completely unable to see the platform they had come from.

Ahead was a dark entrance, very high, wide, and large, with two three-meter-high statues on either side of the entrance.

One was a girl bending over to pick up the moon, and the other was a girl holding the moon up with both hands.

"What do these two statues mean, Captain?"

"In the myth of 'Whispers of the Moon,' it is recorded that before the goddess of the moon, Artemis, became a goddess, she had a near-death experience, but there were two girls, her most loyal followers, who, one of them scooped up the reflection of the moon in the clear stream, and then the other girl lifted the reflection high and sent it back to the sky.

Artemis was thus resurrected.

And these two girls, because of this action, exhausted their own vitality and aged and died, with smiles on their faces when they died.

After Artemis became a goddess, she established the Moon Goddess Church, and the Moon Goddess Church incorporated them into the mythological narrative system, posthumously deifying them as branch gods.""So, are they the symbol of loyalty? Then inside this entrance, isn't it..."

Karun shook his head and said, "Hasn't your grandfather at home explained the mythological narratives of various religions to you?"

Muri paused for a moment and said, "No, he hasn't."

"In that case, it's not surprising. In fact, when reading mythological narratives, you need to remove the filter."

"What is the filter?"

"It's your own beautiful fantasy."

"I see, so that's what it means."

Kevin personally demonstrated how the god of order once grabbed the sleeping gown of the goddess of the moon. It certainly couldn't be described as gentle, but in the records of "Whispers of the Moon," the relationship between the two gods was even a bit ambiguous.

"I guess these two girls should be sacrifices to Artemis, and they may not even be voluntary, but were forcibly dedicated to Artemis, either to heal Artemis's injuries or simply to be used as a stepping stone for her ascent.

Normally, the branch gods are the closest group of people who are still alive around the main god after the main god becomes a god. They are the god's capable assistants, and they are qualified to appear in the murals and be worshipped by the believers in the endless years.

This kind of posthumous deification of branch gods is very rare. I even suspect that among the people who helped create the religion, there were these two girls' former companions, and they used the power of the church to compensate for them."

"Is that so?" Muri took a deep breath. "Captain, what you said seems to be more in line with human nature, and it feels very real to me."

"You need to learn to look at gods with the mindset of looking at people. The Principle God Religion has done research. Gods have two sides, one is mechanized and the other is highly self-centered."

"Captain, how do you know all this knowledge, from reading books?"

"Well, after you go back, I'll give you... no, you go find Alfred and let him recommend some books for you to read."

"Yes, I understand."

Karun opened his palm, and a fireball was condensed and thrown forward. The fireball flew into the entrance, illuminating the inside, but the end was not visible.

"Muri, do you need to rest?"

"No, since absorbing the soul power of Gaetanbert, I feel that all aspects of my abilities have greatly improved. Of course, I still can't compare to you, Captain."

"Then go back and inform everyone to come over. I'll stay here."

"Captain, why don't you go back and inform them, and I'll stay here?"

It would obviously be more dangerous for one person to stay here.

Karun shook his head and said, "I'm afraid you'll have an accident. I'm not at ease."

"Captain, I can do it."

"I'm not worried about you, I'm afraid that you won't be able to react as quickly as I can in the face of an accident. I'm worried that your abilities are not enough."

"Yes, Captain, I'll go back and call them."

Muri's figure turned into black mist and drifted away.

Karun then carried the sword of Achilles and began to walk on the platform. His gaze quickly fell on the piles of stones on both sides of the platform. He went to one side, bent down, and checked the cracks underneath, but found nothing.

Then he walked to the other side of the stone pile. When he was halfway there, he paused for a moment and looked at the sculptures on both sides of the entrance.

They both had smiles on their faces, the kind of smile that sacrifices everything for the gods. This kind of smile actually made Karun uncomfortable, at least he was uncomfortable.

Perhaps, before the endless years, when things happened, they were crying, crying very sadly.

They might even curse, shout, and resist hysterically, but in the end, they were ruthlessly suppressed and coerced.

Suddenly, Karun thought a little deeper. He felt that his previous explanation to Muri was somewhat superficial. Setting these two girls up as branch gods might not be the former companions' mourning and compensation for them...

It was probably a punishment, a retaliation.

Even if you are unwilling, resistant, and resentful, I still want the world to believe that you two are the most loyal followers of the moon god.

Since you dare to resist me and are unwilling to sacrifice voluntarily, then I must make you the typical sacrifice of the god, this is the punishment of the god to you.

Karun blinked and touched the corner of his eye, feeling a bit moist.

Was he empathizing?

Karun shook his head, walked to the other side of the stone pile, bent down, and saw a puppet doll.

Taking out the puppet doll, it made no sound, and it should be completely broken.

Karun opened its mouth and found a letter inside, with the fire attribute aura of Puerh on the sealed mud.

To be honest, Karun was somewhat hesitant about whether to read this letter now. This Pierson was really mischievous. Those who knew him understood that he was going to find a place to lie down in the family tomb, but those who didn't know might think he was here to find inspiration.

The last time he read his letter, he ran into problems.

This time...

But there was no reason not to read it.

He removed the seal, opened the envelope, took out the letter, and unfolded it.

"Dear Miss Pall, I think you should be able to see this second letter of mine. He shouldn't be able to stop you. I think, although I really dare not use the pen he lent me, I believe you will like it."Do you see those two statues? For some reason, when I first laid eyes on them, I felt a sense of greatness, devotion, dedication, and sacrifice.

I apologize, I know I shouldn't be using parallel structures at a time like this, but all of this is just a prelude.

Alright, no more beating around the bush.

I don't know why, but as I continued to gaze upon them, I felt an inexplicable sadness wash over me. It was like coffee that had too much sugar added, yet still retained that bitter taste when swallowed.

I cried, my tears falling onto this piece of letter paper. But I believe that by the time you come here and see this letter, my tears will have already dried.

So, I circled the spots where my tears fell.

I don't know if you will feel the same emotions as I did. Probably not, you are so powerful, while I am as insignificant as an ant.

...

...

...

Oh, there's something I need to remind you, Miss Pall, after you finish reading this letter, please move slowly."

Move slowly?

What does that mean?

Karun set down the envelope and looked up;

The statue that was originally standing by the entrance had somehow moved in front of him, smiling.
