Chapter 11 – Consciousness of the Abyss

Lin Ye was once again the first to enter the tunnel.

Unlike the last simulated mission, the order of entry into the tunnel had little bearing on whether the incident could be resolved. On the other hand, communicating with the captain or letting Number 2 and Number 3 go first could lead to unknown complications.

He could try, but there was no need.

Lin Ye made no move that would alter the course of the future. This time, he didn't want to drastically change the outcome of the last simulation; he just wanted to be killed peacefully by himself.

Time loops were extremely dangerous. If he acted recklessly, relying on the number of simulations he had, he might end up in a situation where even suicide was impossible.

He wanted to use the time in this one simulation to figure out how to safely end the time loop.

Lin Ye hadn't thrown away the Abyssal Egg. The thing was troublesome; discarding it could lead to unpredictable consequences, but carrying it would cause his Aberration.

Without the Abyssal Egg, Lin Ye could communicate with the 'him' of the next loop indefinitely, giving him more time to think with each simulation.

But without the Abyssal Egg, he wouldn't be able to gain a deep understanding of the Aberration Process. It was hard to say which was better.

This time, as Lin Ye moved, he silently monitored his physical state to avoid turning into a monster without even realizing it, like last time.

Perhaps it was a matter of perception, but this time he could clearly feel the Abyssal Egg affecting him.

After walking for about half an hour, Lin Ye's vision went black. He took a step forward, and the version of himself that had already turned into a monster appeared diagonally across from him.

Lin Ye approached his other self. Just as he was about to ask a question, the monstrous Lin Ye spoke abruptly.

"It's fine. I controlled the Aberration Process this time and retained my ability to speak. But I probably won't be able to talk in the next loop."

His voice was hoarse and slightly off-key, but it was still easier than communicating by writing in blood.

"Let's get to the point. We don't have much time. Did you find a way to end the loop?"

This was the first time Lin Ye had ever spoken to himself. The feeling was a bit strange.

"Don't be hasty. We're standing at a specific point in time. As long as we don't move forward, we have infinite time."

The monstrous Lin Ye looked completely calm, as if everything was under his control.

"What are you talking about? Our bodies are still back in the Sanctuary. Can you be sure that time here is synchronized with the Sanctuary? What if the simulation time is cumulative? I'm worried I'll go back and find I've already starved to death!"

Lin Ye found this strange. His 'other self' shouldn't have overlooked something so simple.

The monstrous Lin Ye's composure slowly vanished. He seemed to have just realized the problem.

"...I don't think I can help you. This simulation is a failure. Kill me."

Lin Ye didn't act rashly. He needed to figure out what went wrong.

"What's going on?"

"The Abyss is more terrifying than I imagined. The deeper my understanding of it becomes, the stronger its influence over me grows. I'm already trapped. You have to kill me. You can't let me enter the next loop."

The monstrous Lin Ye tore open his own body and handed the dagger from his waist to Lin Ye.

"Not so fast. We still have time. Like you said, we're at a point in time. The Abyss's influence on you won't deepen."

Lin Ye looked at the self before him, unsure if he was acting or had genuinely forgotten.

Because time had formed a loop, and the cycle had already begun, he should have experienced this conversation once before, only then he was in his other self's position.

"No, the Abyss is far from simple. Neither time nor space can block its influence. Treading the precipice... no, I'm already deep within it."

The monstrous Lin Ye gave an eerie smile, spread his arms, and let his body fall backward like a free-falling object. Blood erupted from his chest, splattering all over Lin Ye.

Lin Ye didn't dodge. Instead, he rushed forward and stabbed his 'other self' a few more times, finishing the job.

His other self seemed to be trying to tell him something, but he couldn't understand what he was trying to convey at all. He could only continue forward.

As Lin Ye walked, he sensed the state of his body's Aberration. Under the influence of the Abyssal Egg, a type of ambient energy in the air was flooding into his body.

Under these circumstances, Lin Ye could only influence which parts of him would aberrate; he could hardly slow the process, making any attempt at controlled Aberration impossible.

Steeped in this ambient energy, Lin Ye's heart was the first thing to aberrate, gradually forming his first Aberrant Organ.

The moment the Aberrant Heart took shape, Lin Ye perceived a much vaster world.

It was an abyss so deep and boundless it had no bottom or edge. It was the void, the world, it was everything.

Lin Ye stood on the edge of the Abyss, gazing into its depths. He seemed to see many things, and yet nothing at all.

"What are you talking about? Our bodies are still back in the Sanctuary. Can you be sure that time here is synchronized with the Sanctuary? What if the simulation time is cumulative? I'm worried I'll go back and find I've already starved to death!"

Snapping back to his senses, Lin Ye realized his 'other self' was now standing before him.

"...I don't think I can help you. This simulation is a failure. Kill me."

The Lin Ye opposite him didn't attack, but asked:

"What's going on?"

"The Abyss is more terrifying than I imagined. The deeper my understanding of it becomes, the stronger its influence over me grows. I'm already trapped. You have to kill me. You can't let me enter the next loop."

Lin Ye tore open his own body, revealing the Aberrant Heart, and handed the dagger from his waist to his other 'self'.

"Not so fast. We still have time. Like you said, we're at a point in time. The Abyss's influence on you won't deepen."

The Lin Ye before him said.

"No, the Abyss is far from simple. Neither time nor space can block its influence. Treading the precipice... no, I'm already deep within it."

Lin Ye gave an eerie smile. He finally understood how to leave this place. So he spread his arms and let his body fall backward like a free-falling object. Blood erupted from his chest, splattering all over the Lin Ye opposite him.

The corpse fell to the ground. Lin Ye was Falling into the Abyss.

…………………

*Buzzz...*

Lin Ye's eyes snapped open. He was sitting in the familiar seat, with the Number 3 D-Class Personnel beside him.

【Simulations Remaining: 8】

*The simulation didn't end. Do I have to leave the tunnel alive? Or do I have to resolve the anomaly? Whatever, it's more or less the same thing.*

Lin Ye now knew how to deal with this tunnel.

All he had to do was connect the tunnel to the Abyss. The Abyss would solve all his problems for him. In fact, Lin Ye had already resolved the tunnel's loop in the last simulation, but a new one probably started because he was dead at the time. This time, he just had to get out alive.

Yes█, just hand█ everything over to█ the Abyss, and it will be█ fine.

Lin Ye revealed an eerie smile.
