Chapter 14 – Assembling the Team

Qingyun Sect Mountain Gate. Lin Changsheng followed Liu Yue and Wang Chen to the agreed meeting place. There, a tall and thin young man with ordinary looks was already waiting.

Upon seeing the three of them, he immediately approached.

"Brother Wang, Sister Yue, you're here."

His attitude was somewhat respectful. "Yes, Chen Feng, let me introduce you to our new teammate for this mission, Lin Changsheng, Junior Brother Lin."

Liu Yue pointed to Lin Changsheng and said to the young man.

"Junior Brother Lin, this is Chen Feng." "Hello, Senior Brother Chen." Lin Changsheng nodded politely.

He could sense that this young man named Chen Feng was at the fourth level of Qi Refining, with a somewhat unstable aura, likely having just broken through recently.

"Lin Changsheng?"

Chen Feng scrutinized Lin Changsheng, and upon sensing Lin Changsheng's "first level of Qi Refining" cultivation, his brows furrowed.

"Sister Yue, didn't you say you found a reliable teammate? Why did you bring a first-level Qi Refining weakling?"

His tone was filled with undisguised disdain and dissatisfaction.

"This mission is to Gale Valley, a place where you could lose your life at any moment! Bringing him along is just a burden, isn't it?"

Lin Changsheng's eyes turned cold upon hearing this. Another one who looks down on people, this team is truly interesting.

A woman who smiles with hidden intentions, a silent and aloof iceberg, and now an arrogant fool.

"Chen Feng, watch your words!" Liu Yue's face darkened as she reprimanded.

"Junior Brother Lin was personally invited by me, and his role is beyond your imagination."

"I don't care what his role is! All I know is that his cultivation will drag us down!"

Chen Feng was clearly unconvinced.

"Although the reward for this mission is high, it's also very dangerous. I don't want to lose my life there because of a weakling!"

"Enough."

Wang Chen, who had been silent, spoke coldly. With just one word, Chen Feng immediately fell silent.

Clearly, in this team, Wang Chen's authority far surpassed Liu Yue's. "Since we're teammates, we must trust each other. If you have objections, you can leave now."

Wang Chen looked at Chen Feng with icy eyes. Chen Feng felt a chill under his gaze, and his arrogance dissipated. Although dissatisfied, he didn't dare to actually leave.

After all, a strong and stable team like Wang Chen and Liu Yue's was hard to find. He could only glare at Lin Changsheng, blaming him for this.

"Hmph, a weakling. Don't expect me to save you when the time comes." He muttered under his breath. Lin Changsheng pretended not to hear. Arguing with such a small character would be beneath him.

"Alright, since everyone is here, let's set off."

Liu Yue stepped in to mediate.

"For this mission, Senior Brother Wang Chen will be the leader and in charge of command. I'll handle the main attack, Chen Feng, you'll be responsible for flank support and vigilance. As for Junior Brother Lin..."

She looked at Lin Changsheng with a smile. "Just follow behind us and keep yourself safe. Your task is to bring us good luck."

Her words seemed to be taking care of Lin Changsheng, but in reality, they completely marginalized him. In battle, he was reduced to a "mascot" who just followed behind and did nothing.

For any cultivator with self-respect, this was an insult. Chen Feng's face showed a gloating expression upon hearing this.

Lin Changsheng sneered inwardly, but his face remained impassive. "Alright, Senior Sister Liu. I won't cause any trouble for everyone." He acted like a genuinely frightened and slightly grateful newcomer.

Liu Yue nodded in satisfaction. What she wanted was an obedient "tool man." With the team assembled, the four left the sect and headed towards the back mountain.

The back mountain stretched endlessly, with ancient trees towering and few people around. As they entered the forest, the atmosphere became heavy. The air was filled with a sense of danger.

Wang Chen walked at the front, vigilant, holding a long sword that gleamed with cold light. Liu Yue and Chen Feng took positions on either side, equally alert.

Only Lin Changsheng seemed unfazed, looking around as if on a leisurely stroll. His powerful mind power had already spread like radar, capturing everything within several miles.

No movement escaped his notice. He knew exactly where hidden snakes lurked and where traps were disguised. "Hey, weakling, what are you looking at? Keep up! If you get lost and eaten by a monster beast, no one will care!"

Chen Feng couldn't help but mock when he saw Lin Changsheng's relaxed demeanor. "Senior Brother Chen, watch your step." Lin Changsheng ignored his taunts and calmly reminded him.

"Do I need your reminder? I..." Chen Feng sneered, about to retort.

Suddenly, a colorful venomous snake shot out from the ground, baring its fangs and striking at his ankle like lightning.

"Ah!" Chen Feng screamed in terror, his soul nearly leaving his body. He had no time to react. The snake was about to bite him.

"Swish!"

A sword light flashed. Wang Chen acted in time, slicing the snake into two.

The foul-smelling snake blood splattered on Chen Feng's pants. He fell to the ground, pale and trembling. In that moment, he felt death was just a breath away.

"Th-thank you, Brother Wang." He said to Wang Chen, still shaken. Wang Chen ignored him, frowning at the snake's corpse.

"It's a Seven-colored Viper, extremely venomous. One bite, and you'll turn to mush in less than ten breaths." Liu Yue was also visibly relieved.

"Chen Feng, how could you be so careless? These snakes love to disguise themselves as vines. How did you not notice?" Chen Feng's face turned various shades of green and white, unable to speak.

His attention had been entirely on mocking Lin Changsheng, not on his surroundings. At this moment, all three of them turned their gaze to Lin Changsheng.

They clearly remembered that Lin Changsheng had warned Chen Feng to watch his step. Could it be that he had spotted the snake beforehand? How was that possible?

How could a first-level Qi Refining disciple have a Divine Sense more acute than theirs at the mid-stage of Qi Refining?

"Junior Brother Lin, just now..."

Liu Yue asked tentatively. "I don't know either." Lin Changsheng scratched his head, looking puzzled.

"I just suddenly felt like something was moving in the grass over there, and it gave me the creeps, so I said something."

"Maybe... it was just my imagination."

This explanation was reasonable. But to Liu Yue and Wang Chen, it deepened their impression of Lin Changsheng's "luck."

This wasn't just simple good luck. It was almost like an animal's instinctive sense of danger! Chen Feng's feelings were the most complicated at this moment.

He had been saved by the "weakling" he looked down on. It was both humiliating and frightening. He looked at Lin Changsheng, wanting to say thank you, but the words wouldn't come out.

In the end, he just snorted coldly, got up, and silently moved to the other side of the team. Although he still looked down on Lin Changsheng, he no longer dared to mock him casually.

The team continued forward. But this time, the atmosphere subtly changed. No one dared to treat Lin Changsheng as just a "mascot" anymore.
