So the three deductionists who decided to explore the plot on their own began their actions that made Yu Xing's heart tremble.
Yu Xing was fine. After communicating with Carlos' paper doll on the third day, he wandered around the ship, collecting data that had been painstakingly organized by people such as Zhou Jing, paranormal researchers, and geographers.
As for Nightmare and Carlos, they left the camp and headed back towards the center of the island along the route they took on the second day.
Since they set off from the camp every day, they wouldn't have enough time to reach the very center. Besides, they weren't afraid, so they decided to sleep in the jungle at night to speed up their progress.
Wu Runhao was startled once again. After the experimenters who were suspected to be influenced by the undead and were taken away by his brother-in-law disappeared, he also lost Longzhou and A Bai, whom he had just saved.
He immediately concluded a new rule: those who had direct contact with the undead were very likely to be summoned back to the island by the undead!
After hastily confirming that Fang Xiaoyu was still on the ship, Wu Runhao breathed a sigh of relief. Fortunately, Fang Xiaoyu should be one of the few exceptions.
However, he was too happy too soon.
Yu Xing was very heartless. After eating and drinking comfortably under Fang Yao's watchful eyes for a day, he quietly slipped off the ship in the early morning of the fourth day to meet up with Carlos and Nightmare.
He still had the paper doll with him as he wore casual clothes, sports pants, and sports shoes, carrying a backpack filled with high-calorie food and essential survival tools, leaving behind Fang Yao and Wu Runhao, who were worried about him.
After all, this was just a deduction game. Even though Fang Xiaoyu's sister and brother-in-law had genuine feelings for him, it had nothing to do with Yu Xing.
It was all fake.
Yu Xing stepped on the ground of the coast and looked back at the huge ship. His eyelids drooped slightly, repeating in his mind: it's just fake.
Based on the description of Carlos by the paper doll, he caught up with Carlos and Nightmare, who had intentionally slowed down, by taking a shortcut.
Regardless of gender, both Carlos and Nightmare were jealous when they saw him clean and tidy. They argued all the way, making quite a scene.
The hallucinations became denser as they approached the center. And these past two days, it hadn't rained again. The dark clouds accumulated more and expanded the range of the spiral.
After passing through tall trees and graveyards, there were abandoned houses, abandoned blood rice fields, blood and flesh scarecrows, and so on.
They made it through without any danger. On the fifth day, amidst the constantly appearing artificial traces, they reached the center of the island.
The low trees gradually became dense, and in the midst of the low trees were towering trees that covered the sky, enough to block the satellite's view and prevent the buildings within from being discovered.
But Yu Xing and the others still found it.
In the very center, there was actually a structure that covered an area the size of two football fields. The buildings were not scattered, and each one was no more than three stories high. There was also arable land that could produce food.
However, these places were now completely abandoned. Weeds covered the ground, and the buildings were filled with unknown vine-like plants similar to ivy. In the gaps between the vine leaves, the only creatures on the island, apart from outsiders, the moths, were nesting.
The moths were quietly resting on the walls with their wings folded. Nightmare didn't notice and accidentally touched the vine, causing countless moths to flutter their wings and fly. They didn't fly far and gathered in groups in front of the leaves before settling down in another patch of vines.
The sound of flapping wings gave the three of them goosebumps. When the powder that the moths had shaken off fell to the ground, they cautiously pushed aside the vines on the doors of the buildings and went in to inspect.
Some of the buildings were dormitories, while others looked like laboratories. Inside, there were many cylindrical vessels made of glass that had been broken, leaving traces of dried unknown liquid.
When Yu Xing saw these broken glass vessels, his expression changed. His heart suddenly tightened, followed by a moment of intense pain that made him involuntarily freeze.
His gaze suddenly turned cold when no one noticed.
"What was originally here? And where did it go?" Nightmare carefully examined the rows of glass vessels with a scrutinizing gaze. "In movies and horror games, these would either contain mutated experimental human subjects or monsters. If they're broken, it means that the people or monsters inside have escaped."
"But there are no other creatures or monsters on the island besides those moths outside," Carlos rubbed his chin, showing great interest.
"Didn't they say before that the people here were using some paranormal means to raise the dead? Could the bodies inside be the ones that have already been raised, used for the second phase?" After waiting for several seconds and not hearing Yu Xing join the discussion, he couldn't help but turn around and look at him with some confusion.
Yu Xing remained calm.
"What do you think, San?" Carlos asked.
Yu Xing's tone was as usual, calm with a hint of detachment. "I guess the original contents of these vessels were not corpses."
Nightmare's eyes lit up. "Then what were they?"
"Monsters. Monsters that we haven't seen in this deduction. Those ferocious corpses were just food prepared for the monsters inside the vessels." Yu Xing looked up and even smiled, as if the momentary coldness was just an illusion."This organization was conducting some sort of dangerous research. However, one day, things got out of control. The people in the organization fled, leaving the things in the vessels unattended. Soon after, they broke the glass and escaped."
Nightmare listened and became suspicious, "Wow, that's very specific, as if you've seen it with your own eyes."
Yu Xing shook his head, "It's just a reasonable deduction. We've looked at so many buildings, and not one of them has any bloodstains, not even a mess. From this, we can infer that the people in the organization were not injured, and the monsters that ran out at least have self-consciousness. They even know not to destroy the arrangement here. They can't be malevolent corpses that act on instinct or are driven."
"That makes sense. So, I can also guess that the thing originally contained in the glass was a humanoid creature, right?" Carlos observed Yu Xing's expression without showing any emotion, "Beast-like creatures wouldn't be so smart. Could it be a ghost? Were they keeping specters inside?"
Nightmare glanced at the vessel again, feeling a bit out of place.
But before she could organize her thoughts into words, she heard Xing say, "Or perhaps, undead. What's inside is probably not the malevolent ghosts we know of, but a kind of entity that fits more with the Western definition of ghosts."
Nightmare nodded, "Exactly! That's what I wanted to say!"
The entire deduction took place on the Undead Island. She had wanted to say this for a long time. Although all the NPCs had Chinese faces, apart from the Five Elements knowledge proposed by Xing, other behavior patterns and equipment did not conform to Chinese traditions.
Perhaps this has something to do with the absurd world background inherent in this deduction. This is not something they can figure out right now.
So now there's one more question, where did the thing inside go?
