Chapter 7 – Treat

The blood was warm, and Yu Xing tasted the familiar yet unfamiliar taste in his mouth. Unexpectedly calm, he maintained a subtle mood and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.

The cold breath only appeared for a moment, then disappeared like a fish in the sea.

The shaman looked at his blood, withdrew her hand, and, without concern or surprise, sighed, "It looks like you're really badly injured... Come in, I'll give you some medicine."

"I..." Based on what he had just seen through the crack in the door, Yu Xing was very resistant to this. Who knew if he would become a member of the hanging when he went in? And just now, when the shaman touched him, he felt like he had touched some kind of allergen, and the sudden pain made the memory fresh in his mind.

A thought emerged in his mind... The shaman was not a good thing for him.

"Come in." The shaman walked ahead, opened the door completely, and Yu Xing subconsciously looked inside, only to find it empty and simple, with no hanging bodies.

Not a single one.

But...

A look of confusion flashed in his eyes. Could it be that his injury was not just memory loss, but also a bump to his head, making him prone to hallucinations?

The burns on the shaman's face and the swaying corpse in the house, were they all hallucinations he had produced in a nervous state?

In this situation, this was the most reasonable explanation he could think of. After a certain nerve in his brain was damaged, auditory and visual hallucinations, and even a fuzzy concept of time, made him feel like a day was not twenty-four hours...

It seemed reasonable.

Everything around him was normal, and the only abnormal thing was himself.

Yu Xing followed the shaman into the house for the time being, reaching out to touch his messy hair, a look of inquiry flashing in his eyes.

Yes, it seemed reasonable.

But he didn't think it was the truth.

In the end, it was just self-deception, fabricating a seemingly reasonable explanation to make his situation a little better.

It couldn't.

There must have been something strange happening here, and some kind of danger was approaching him.

Stepping into the shaman's house, Yu Xing looked up at the ceiling and realized that there was no beam in the middle of the room that could be used to hang a body.

It seemed that the hanging bodies at the door were just illusions, or perhaps some kind of symbol from his subconscious.

He suspected that there should be related experiences in his lost memory, otherwise, he wouldn't have felt that palpitation and sorrow.

Thinking this, he withdrew his gaze from the ceiling and looked around.

The only thing that piqued his curiosity was a small stone statue in the center of the room. The statue had long hair and a long robe, with a blurry face, and there seemed to be something in a plate in front of it, but Yu Xing couldn't see clearly.

The room was too dark.

"Sit down." The shaman lit a kerosene lamp and placed it on the table, the faint light shining on her face as she pointed to a wooden chair, indicating for Yu Xing to sit.

Yu Xing obediently sat down as instructed, and the shaman turned and went into another room. After a while, she came out with a medicine box and a set of black clothes.

Was she really going to treat him?

Yu Xing remained calm, watching as the shaman opened the medicine box, revealing various medicines, bandages, gauze, and scissors.

The shaman said, "I've studied medicine and can help you look at the wound. Maybe I can help you heal faster. And this set of clothes... It's my husband's. He's never home, and he can't wear them anyway. I'll give them to you so you're not exposed, it wouldn't be good for the village girls to see you like that."

The shaman was probably around thirty years old, and what she said made sense.

Yu Xing could only go along with it and agreed.

At that moment, the shaman unwound the bandages on his upper body layer by layer, and Yu Xing took the opportunity to take a look at his own injuries. It seemed that the wound was not as exaggerated as he had imagined at first, mostly just bleeding from the flesh, but the shape of the wound...

It was as if something had dug out chunks of flesh and blood, leaving behind bloody holes.

"..." As expected, the shaman asked, "How did you get this injury?"

"I don't know."

"Oh, I forgot what you said. You don't remember who you are or where you came from, right?" The shaman took out a salve that Yu Xing couldn't name and skillfully pressed it lightly around the edge of the bloody holes with a cotton swab.

The bleeding had stopped in these holes, but they still looked terrifying. Yu Xing suddenly felt that maybe the injury wasn't as severe as he had expected, but rather, was his healing speed fast? Or was his endurance increasing?

He suppressed his speculation and replied to the shaman, "Well, I might have hurt my brain."

At that moment, Yu Xing remembered that he hadn't explained his intentions to the shaman, so he carefully said, "Actually, when I woke up from a coma, I was in a village on the other side of the woods, but it seems that something happened in that village, and I couldn't find any food, so I walked all the way here. I want to know if there are any other towns nearby besides the two villages."

The shaman's hand, which was applying the salve, paused. "I know about that small village, but you said something happened to them?"

A hint of surprise appeared in her eyes, then she calmed down, even showing some understanding. "Perhaps this is the price of greed and betrayal. That little place might indeed be in turmoil during this time. You leaving them to come to me was the right choice."

Hmm?At first, Yu Xing thought that the incident in Old Zhang's village might be related to the witch, but if the hanged corpse was an illusion, the likelihood of this connection diminished.

Now, it seemed that the "trouble" the witch spoke of and the "trouble" he referred to were not the same thing at all.

Betrayal and greed? What quarrel?

All he saw was desolation.

Yu Xing decided not to contradict the witch for the time being and to inquire slowly later. He reminded her, "So, are there any other towns nearby..."

The witch chuckled lightly, "Are you looking for someone?"

"No."

"Then why go to the town? Just stay here." She tied a new bandage over the place where she had applied medicine to Yu Xing, "Or stay here for a while, then decide whether you want to stay forever. Trust me, this place is more mysterious than you think, we are people blessed by the gods."

Confusion flickered through Yu Xing's mind.

Gods?

She called herself a witch, said the village was blessed by gods, ah... The villagers listened to her so devoutly, could they have been brainwashed?

However, being alone and indeed hungry, Yu Xing hesitated for a moment before agreeing.

If something was amiss, it would be better to run away on a full stomach than with no preparation at all.

With the bandage on his upper body changed, Yu Xing rolled up his wide pant legs and watched the witch squat down to apply medicine to his legs.

The wounds on his legs were not dense, none on the thighs, only on the knees, the bends of the legs, and the ankles where there were bloody holes, which were not embarrassing.

The villagers often rolled up their pant legs when working in the fields, and everyone was used to seeing it.

But...

Looking at the positions of these wounds, an idea formed in Yu Xing's mind.

It seemed as if the creator of these wounds intended to restrict his movement. These joints, which were necessary for every step he took, would have been impossible to use if he didn't seem to have a high tolerance for pain; he probably wouldn't have been able to leave Old Zhang's house at all.
