Chapter 14 – Figure in the water

"Big sister, are you pretending to be injured here?"

Yu Xing fell silent for a moment, then squatted down to take a look. To be honest, the wound was quite deep, and fresh blood was seeping out quickly, taking a small strip of skin and flesh with it.

The nearby grass was hard, with jagged edges that easily cut through the skin. Strands of flesh were now hanging from it.

They had encountered this type of grass along the way, but Yu Xing was wearing long pants, so at most, it felt like his clothes had been pulled. The shaman, on the other hand, was different. Today, she was wearing a black embroidered cheongsam, with no protection against the external environment on her legs.

The shaman's expression was pained, like a delicate woman who had never been injured, frozen in place.

After looking at the wound, Yu Xing had a good idea of what the shaman wanted to do and quickly responded, "It looks like the wound is quite serious. Are you unable to move?"

"Yeah, it hurts too much..." The shaman answered hoarsely, a layer of mist forming in her eyes as she looked up at him. "There's a lot of jagged grass here, and it often cuts through people's skin. I'm usually very careful, but today, while talking to you, I didn't pay attention for a moment."

Was she trying to make me feel guilty?

Yu Xing cooperated and said, "It's all my fault. Otherwise, should I carry you back?"

"I don't want to go back. It hurts... I feel safer by the lake. Otherwise... can you go back and get the medical kit for me? I'll wash the wound by the river myself to prevent infection." Although the shaman felt that Yu Xing's apology was insincere, she still continued the conversation.

"Alright, you walk upstream. Once you reach an area with water, don't move. I'll go get the medical kit and find you along the river." Yu Xing was very decisive, and after speaking, he hurriedly left, as if he was genuinely worried about the shaman.

Watching his figure disappear into the jungle, the mist in the shaman's eyes receded, and her expression turned cold. She looked slowly towards the lake, completely unaffected by the wound on her leg.

"Shi Wei... what do you think of him?" She said softly, squatting down and reaching her fingers into the dirty water, causing ripples to form.

Ripples also appeared in another part of the lake, as if in response.

The shaman continued to mutter, "The moment I saw him, I felt that he would have the perfect body for you. Gentle, handsome, young, and his long hair is also similar to yours. I brought him here today to show you. If you're satisfied..."

Suddenly, a long wave emerged from the calm lake, and something swam towards her from the center of the lake. A smile appeared in the shaman's eyes.

"Swish"

The sound of breaking water rang out, and a black head emerged from the surface first.

Slowly, the black figure rose higher and higher, revealing a pale face from the dense, long hair.

It was the face of a man, slightly swollen and decaying, with unidentifiable patches of discoloration, but it could still be seen that he was once a handsome man.

The expression on the man's face in the water was emotionless as he looked coldly at the smiling shaman, then rose higher until his entire upper body emerged from the water.

The black, oversized robe was dripping wet, and the long hair extended from his head, spreading out on the water's surface, several meters long, entangled and dirty.

It gave the impression of a clog of women's hair in a bathroom drain, making people feel uncomfortable for no reason.

But at a closer look, the way the man emerged from the water was exactly like the stone statue of the "divine being" worshipped in the villagers' homes!

The shaman maintained her crouching position and looked up at him, showing a hint of infatuation in her eyes at the appearance that was now so different from a human's.

"He's an amnesiac outsider. I've been calling him Shi Wei these past two days, as if I were calling you."

"Shi Wei, I saw his reflection in the water just now, and it was like seeing our future. You will have the most handsome body and be with me forever..."

Before she could finish her sentence, she was suddenly grabbed by the neck by the man in the water and lifted into the air.

The man in the water looked at her with such cold indifference, as if he were looking at a stranger, in stark contrast to the shaman's gaze.

"Do you want me to take on his body because you think I like it, or because you like him?" His mouth didn't move, but his voice resounded directly in the shaman's mind.

His tone was filled with deep suspicion, without a hint of trust.

Then, he suddenly erupted in anger, causing the entire lake to ripple slightly and emit strange, mournful sounds. His hoarse voice exploded in the shaman's mind, "You like good-looking things, don't you?! You think I'm ugly now!"

The shaman struggled to breathe, panic and sadness in her eyes as she involuntarily tried to explain, "You... I... I just want you to have the best... body... If you don't like it, I'll find another one... I won't want him..."

"You remember this!" The man in the water's face twisted into a cruel expression as he tightened his thin, bony fingers. "You're uglier than me, and you have no right to despise me. You are the ugliest thing! If you betray me, no one in this world will ever like you again, never!"

The shaman could hardly speak, only making gasping sounds, struggling to explain, "Cough... I... I won't betray you... never... despise..."

The man in the water stared at her, as if trying to determine if what she said was true.

After a few seconds, the shaman's face turned purple, her eyes rolled back, and her struggling gradually weakened, causing the man in the water to release his grip.

"Cough, cough, cough..." The shaman fell to the ground, coughing violently, looking disheveled.

The man in the water retracted his hand, his entire wrist covered again by the black sleeve. He stepped back, saying coldly, "He'll do."

The shaman's eyes lit up.

Even though she hadn't fully recovered from the suffocation, she couldn't hide her joy.

After searching for so many years, she had finally found a body that satisfied Shi Wei. She would soon be able to walk side by side with Shi Wei outside the water!

However, the man in the water interrupted her thoughts with his next words, "I'm hungry."

"Hungry... hungry?" The shaman repeated softly, puzzled. "Didn't you just eat a little girl from the neighboring village a few days ago, and these past few days, I used illusions to make many people willingly offer their flesh and blood. If I take more, some villagers will die, and it's hard for me to explain the matter of eternal life...""I'm hungry, find me something to eat," the figure in the water demanded without any intention of being considerate to the witch. After stating this unequivocally, he leaned back and dissolved into the water, disappearing from sight.

The witch pursed her lips. She never disobeyed any of Shi Wei's requests. If he wanted food, it didn't matter if it caused loopholes in the carefully maintained divine decrees.

Yu Xing leaned against the trunk of a sturdy tree, witnessing the entire scene.

He hadn't gone to the village to fetch the medical kit yet. Instead, he had walked a distance away before circling back and hiding behind the tree.

At this moment, his suspicions were confirmed: "Hmph, so-called deities, nothing but a water ghost with a bit more practice."
