Chapter 35 – Imagine things

Su Hua did slap Chu Suosuo yesterday, but it was only on one side of her face, and it didn't swell up that badly.

Clearly, someone else had added to it.

Su Hua found Gu Nanyin's number and dialed it. "Nanyin, what happened to Chu Suosuo's face?"

Gu Nanyin burst into laughter, laughing for a good while before stopping. "Last night, she went to a bar and drank until midnight. On her way home, someone stopped her, dragged her out of the car, knocked her out, and beat her face into a pig's head. She had a bodyguard with her, but he was knocked out too. I can't hold it in anymore, let me laugh a bit more, hahaha."

After Gu Nanyin finished laughing, Su Hua asked, "Did you report it to the police?"

"Yes, the police checked the surveillance cameras, but they found that the cameras on that section of the road were broken, so they couldn't solve the case."

Su Hua secretly breathed a sigh of relief.

Whoever beat up Chu Suosuo, the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

She paused and asked, "Did you go see her?"

She actually wanted to ask if Gu Beixian went to see her.

Some things are almost instinctive, completely uncontrollable.

Gu Nanyin seemed to guess her thoughts and said, "Don't worry, sis-in-law, my brother didn't go. He had something urgent yesterday afternoon and took a flight out. My dad and I went to see her. Chu Suosuo cried so miserably, she deserved it!"

After chatting with Gu Nanyin for a while, Su Hua hung up the phone.

After washing up, she went to the living room.

Breakfast was laid out on the dining table, and Su Peilan had gone to the hospital.

The household registration book was placed next to the breakfast, with a note on top.

Su Hua picked it up and read it. The note said: "Daughter, I found the household registration book for you. Happy divorce! The sooner you leave, the sooner you'll be free from suffering! In a few days, I'll arrange blind dates for you! Two a day, one in the morning, one in the evening! Infuriate Gu Beixian! Infuriate that old bastard Gu Aoting!"

Su Hua couldn't help but laugh, but as she laughed, she also felt very sad.

She thought that after the divorce, it might be a long time before she could accept another man.

After finishing breakfast, Su Hua put the household registration book and her ID card into her bag. She had arranged to meet Gu Beixian today to get divorced.

Her phone suddenly rang; it was Gu Beixian calling.

His voice sounded a bit distant. "There was an issue at the overseas branch yesterday afternoon. I came to handle it. We'll talk about the divorce when I get back."

Su Hua felt a slight relief, but quickly tensed up again. "How long will you be gone?"

"A week at the shortest, half a month at the longest."

Su Hua paused. "Then we'll wait until you get back."

"Okay."

Just as she was about to hang up, she suddenly remembered something and said, "Chu Suosuo's face was beaten last night. It wasn't me who arranged it."

Gu Beixian's tone was calm. "I know."

Su Hua was slightly surprised. "You know?"

"Yes, it was probably the same person who smashed her left hand last time."

"Who?"

"Ah-Yao."

Those two short words instantly pierced Su Hua's heart.

Her emotions suddenly became intense, and she almost instinctively shouted, "It wasn't him!"

Her usually gentle voice was sharp and crisp, even she found it unfamiliar.

After a moment of silence, she softened her voice and said, "It wasn't him. He passed away a long time ago, died in a fire. Last time at Grandfather Gu's house, I took you to see his grave, remember?"

Gu Beixian said nothing, only responded with a faint "hmm."

Su Hua felt that he still didn't believe her, that his "hmm" was just to make her shut up.

But she didn't want to argue anymore. After calming her emotions, she said, "Call me when you get back."

"Okay."

A week later.

A young woman named Shen Yuan came to visit. As soon as she entered, she called out, "Senior, hello, I'm Shen Yuan, Shen Huai's sister."

Su Hua had already received a call from Shen Huai in advance and invited her in.

She offered her a seat and served her a cup of tea.

Shen Yuan introduced herself, "I'm also from the Archaeology Department of Kyoto University, but I only studied for half a year before going abroad as an exchange student to study international archaeology. I just graduated this year and now work at the city museum. I've heard a lot about you, senior. You were quite the figure at our school back then."

Su Hua smiled. "You don't need to call me senior, just use my name. I started school early and skipped grades in elementary school, so even though I graduated early, I might be younger than you."

They compared their ages and found that they were born on the same year, month, and day.

Su Hua was a few hours younger than Shen Yuan.

Shen Yuan came this time on behalf of the museum to invite Su Hua to help restore an ancient painting.

When Su Hua followed her to the city museum, she found out that the painting to be restored was a reclusive scene by Wang Meng, one of the "Four Masters of the Yuan Dynasty."

This painting was the same one that the tall, skinny guy and the bald guy had kidnapped her to restore two or three months ago.

At that time, she had only unrolled the painting but hadn't had time to restore it before the case was solved.

Su Hua was puzzled. "Why hasn't this painting been restored after such a long time?"

Shen Yuan sighed. "Stolen goods have to go through procedures. After being handed over to the national treasury, they are distributed to the museum. Once in the museum, experts have to appraise and study it, and then restoration experts draft a restoration plan. This process takes two or three months. This time, we invited you to join other restoration experts in the restoration because you were the one who unrolled the painting. Of course, this was also my brother's idea."

Su Hua understood. Shen Huai did this for her benefit.

In the private sector, no matter how well you do, there's always a sense of being unorthodox.

Officially, it appears more legitimate.

Involving her in this restoration would add a layer of prestige, although she didn't really need it.

They arrived at the Cultural Relics Protection Department.

As soon as Su Hua entered the restoration studio, she saw a room full of experts.

The youngest present were in their forties or fifties, most of them with gray hair, all elite talents invited from across the country.

Su Hua was the youngest.

But because she was Su Wenmai's granddaughter and had a bit of fame in the field, no one dared to look down on her.

They spent the morning discussing the restoration plan with the experts.

By lunchtime, Su Hua didn't feel like eating with a room full of old men, so she left.

Outside, Shen Yuan was already waiting at the door, smiling. "Our curator asked me to treat you to lunch."

Both being archaeology majors, they had common topics to talk about, and being of similar age, they quickly became familiar.

Of course, the main reason was Shen Yuan's lively and friendly personality.

As they walked, Su Hua received a WeChat message from Shen Huai, asking how things were going today.

Su Hua replied while walking.

Suddenly, Shen Yuan's eyes lit up, and she covered her mouth in amazement. "Wow, a handsome guy! Our curator is walking this way with a super handsome guy. My goodness, he's so good-looking!"

She hurriedly touched her face, tidied her hair, and straightened her clothes, then nudged Su Hua with her elbow. "Quick, check if my makeup is smudged? Is my hair and outfit okay?"

Su Hua, who was looking down at her phone, glanced up at her and said, "It's fine."

Shen Yuan blushed. "That handsome guy is looking at me and smiling. Do you think he's interested in me?"

Su Hua followed her gaze.

The man was indeed handsome.

Young, handsome, tall, with fair skin, a noble and well-defined bone structure, and features as exquisite as a sculpture.

He wore a dark suit, exuding elegance and extraordinary presence.

But this handsome guy was her soon-to-be ex-husband, Gu Beixian.

His gaze was clearly directed at her, not Shen Yuan.

Maybe women just like to imagine things, Su Hua thought.

Their eyes met, and Gu Beixian smiled and nodded slightly at her. After a few words with the curator, he strode towards them.

Shen Yuan stopped in her tracks, rubbing her hands on her clothes.

Su Hua also stopped, slightly puzzled. "Why did you stop?"

Shen Yuan's eyes were fixed on Gu Beixian, too excited to respond to Su Hua.

When Gu Beixian reached them, Shen Yuan eagerly extended her hand and said enthusiastically, "Hello, handsome! I'm Shen Yuan. Yuan means eagle. Nice to meet you. What's your name?"

Gu Beixian didn't extend his hand, merely glanced at her indifferently. "I'm looking for Su Hua."

Shen Yuan quickly linked arms with Su Hua, smiling. "She's my good friend. We were born on the same day. Looking for her is the same as looking for me."

Su Hua couldn't help but laugh.

She hadn't expected Shen Yuan to be so amusing.

Gu Beixian clearly had no patience for her antics. He raised his hand, placed it on Su Hua's shoulder, and pulled her into his embrace. "Shall we have lunch together?"

"Okay," Su Hua replied.

Shen Yuan was stunned. "Su Hua, you know this handsome guy? Who is he to you? Why is he holding you?"

Su Hua smiled. "We know each other. We're quite close."

As husband and wife, they were the closest of kin, yet could be the most distant strangers.

Hearing they were close, Shen Yuan thought they were relatives. Her eyes lit up again, just about to speak.

But Gu Beixian's patience had run out. He simply held Su Hua and walked away.

Shen Yuan was left in a daze.
