Chapter 39 – Love at first sight

Su Hua lifted her small face, her big eyes glistening with tears as she looked at Gu Beixian.

For someone so high and mighty to say such words, it was truly rare.

How could she not like him?

She was practically head over heels for him.

If there was something she didn't like, it was his bad temper. But over the past year, he had always been very restrained in front of her.

She also didn't like that he had an ex-girlfriend who made her uncomfortable, but recently, he had always been on her side.

Ever since she mentioned that she was very bothered by Chu Suosuo, he had deliberately kept his distance from her.

Su Hua's heart softened, and just as she was about to agree, someone knocked on the door.

The door opened.

A young girl who looked like a receptionist walked in and said, "Miss Su Hua, someone is calling for you downstairs."

When Su Hua was changing into her wedding dress, she had locked her phone in the dressing room locker.

Thinking someone might have an urgent matter, she apologized to the photographer and went downstairs to take the call.

She picked up the landline on the first floor.

Gu Aoting's indifferent voice came through the phone, "Miss Su, a person should keep their word. I despise people who go back on their promises."

Su Hua felt as if she had been slapped in public, her face burning.

After a moment, she said, "I didn't go back on my word. Beixian just returned from abroad yesterday, and today is the weekend, the civil affairs bureau is closed."

Gu Aoting coldly replied, "Next Monday, I will have my assistant clear his schedule. I hope Miss Su won't disappoint me again."

Su Hua murmured a response.

Gu Aoting added meaningfully, "I value Beixian highly, but if he displeases me, he is not indispensable. My eldest son, Gu Lin, may be slightly less talented in business, but he is decisive and not distracted by romantic entanglements, and he listens to me. Our family is different from yours. We have a vast business empire, and the business world is a battlefield. It's a matter of winners and losers, with no room for father-son or brotherly affection. If Beixian doesn't become a king, he becomes a loser. Do you understand, Miss Su?"

The implication was clear: if you don't divorce, you will be the stumbling block in Gu Beixian's path to success, a sinner.

An old hand like Gu Aoting knew how to speak.

Not a single vulgar word, yet it made the listener feel as if they were being stabbed in the back, unable to lift their head.

What else could Su Hua say?

If she didn't divorce, she would be a sinner.

With a pale face and a trembling voice, she said, "I understand."

Gu Aoting hung up the phone.

Su Hua left the reception area with heavy steps, finding a secluded corner to hide.

It took a lot of effort to calm her emotions.

When she felt she was ready, she pretended nothing had happened and returned to the studio.

But she no longer had any interest in taking photos.

After hastily taking a few shots, she told the photographer, "That's enough, just these will do."

Leaving the studio, she quietly went to the dressing room to change clothes and remove her makeup, then left with Gu Beixian.

After stepping out, Gu Beixian asked her, "Who called you just now?"

Su Hua shook her head, "No one."

Gu Beixian looked at her intently, "Tell me the truth."

Su Hua avoided his gaze, glanced at her watch, and half-jokingly said, "I promised to take care of you, but I might not be able to. How about I treat you to a meal instead?"

Gu Beixian paused.

The light hidden deep in his eyes gradually faded.

He quietly ruffled her hair and teased, "You think one meal is enough to get rid of me? Stingy."

Su Hua forced a smile, "If one meal isn't enough, then let's add another."

Gu Beixian didn't say anything more.

They found a nearby restaurant.

After dinner, it was already dark.

They got into the car.

Gu Beixian asked, "Where to?"

Su Hua fastened her seatbelt and said, "Take me to the hospital."

"It's so late, why go to the hospital? Doesn't your grandmother have a caregiver?"

"My grandmother has been particularly dependent on me lately, especially at night. She doesn't want the caregiver or my mom, just me."

Gu Beixian gently tucked her hair behind her ear, his dark eyes locking onto her, wanting to say: I also depend on you, especially at night.

But he felt it was too sentimental for a man to say such things, so he kept it to himself.

Even if he said it, it wouldn't matter anymore.

When they arrived at the hospital, it started to rain.

Gu Beixian parked the car, took an umbrella from the trunk, and walked Su Hua to the inpatient department.

The umbrella was tilted almost entirely towards Su Hua, leaving half of Gu Beixian's shoulder exposed.

Su Hua noticed and pushed the umbrella towards him.

But after a few steps, the umbrella was tilted back towards her.

Su Hua raised her hand to push it again, but Gu Beixian held her hand and gently said, "I'm a grown man, a little rain won't hurt. You, on the other hand, can't catch a cold."

Su Hua's eyes welled up, and she clung to his arm, not letting go until they reached the ward.

That night, Su Hua helped her grandmother wash her face and feet.

Looking at her grandmother's wrinkled skin, Su Hua felt a pang of sadness.

She had been raised by her grandparents, and her feelings for her grandmother were stronger than for her mother.

Late at night, she lay beside her grandmother, hugging her from behind.

Her once tall and sturdy grandmother was now thin and frail, like a withered grass swaying in the wind.

A few days ago, during a full-body checkup, the doctor said all her organs were aging, especially the kidney she had transplanted three years ago.

At her age, the doctors no longer recommended surgery due to the high risks. They could only take it one day at a time.

Su Hua had a lot on her mind and couldn't sleep.

Her grandmother was also awake.

In the darkness.

She heard her grandmother's hoarse voice slowly say, "Child, it's because of me that you're suffering. If it weren't for me, you wouldn't have married into that family, and you wouldn't be getting divorced."

Su Hua buried her head in her grandmother's bony back and said after a long pause, "I don't regret marrying him, truly."

Her grandmother didn't say anything, just sighed heavily.

The next day, Monday.

Su Hua and Gu Beixian arrived at the civil affairs bureau as planned.

As she got out of the car, Su Hua looked up and saw a tastefully decorated café by the roadside. She paused, her steps faltering.

Three years ago, she and Gu Beixian had met for the first time there.

She remembered it was a cold spring day.

He wore a black cashmere coat, looking even more handsome than in the photos, with a cold and aloof demeanor.

Though he was in a wheelchair, he exuded an air of nobility.

He had beautiful eyes, deep and dark, with prominent double eyelids and long eyelashes that slightly drooped at the outer corners.

Such beautiful eyes, yet they were melancholic and cold, like pearls covered in dust.

Looking into his eyes, she felt an inexplicable ache in her heart.

Those eyes were so much like Ah-Yao's.

Thirteen years ago, when she saw him for the last time in the hospital, he had an oxygen mask on his face and couldn't speak, just silently looking at her with those eyes.

His gaze was so melancholic, so heart-wrenching.

Seeing the same melancholy in Gu Beixian's eyes, she wanted to hug him, kiss his eyes, and gently soothe the pain in them.

"Why did you stop?" Gu Beixian's deep, pleasant voice pulled Su Hua back to reality.

He held her cold fingertips.

His fingertips were just as cold.

Su Hua responded and followed his steps.

As they reached the entrance of the civil affairs bureau, she turned back and glanced at the café's name, loveatfirstsight.

In Chinese, it meant: love at first sight.

The civil affairs bureau was crowded with people getting divorced, and they had to take a number and wait in line.

Most of the couples were young, around their age, arguing and ready to divorce at the drop of a hat.

The young couples in front of them all had cold faces, glaring at each other like enemies.

Only she and Gu Beixian held hands, their eyes filled with affection, looking like they couldn't bear to part.

Because they were so different, and their looks were so striking, everyone stared at them in surprise.

Su Hua felt a bit embarrassed and turned to face Gu Beixian.

He pulled her into his arms, his fingers naturally stroking her back to comfort her.

It was as if they were there to show off their love, not to get divorced.

Finally, someone couldn't help but point to the marriage registration desk and say, "The marriage certificates are issued over there. Did you come to the wrong place?"

Gu Beixian's expression remained calm as he said, "We're here to get divorced."

Everyone started whispering.

They couldn't understand why a couple who seemed so in love would want a divorce.

When it was almost their turn, Su Hua's phone suddenly rang.

She took her phone out of her bag and walked to the window to answer it. After hearing just a few words, she was already in tears.

Sensing something was wrong, Gu Beixian walked over.

Seeing her face full of tears and her complexion pale, he felt a sharp pain in his heart and urgently asked, "What happened?"

"My grandmother, my grandmother... I don't have a grandmother anymore..." Su Hua sobbed uncontrollably, her knees giving way as she collapsed to the ground.

Gu Beixian quickly scooped her up in his arms and hurriedly carried her outside.
