Chapter 269 – A thousand soldiers were terrified

Proofreader & Editor: Peter Pan

With Hu Lie's serious injury, the sandstorm also began to weaken, and even the natural sandstorm was about to pass.

The two of them limped out of the area to find their horses.

Before this, everyone was chasing Yue Hongling on horseback, but she dismounted to fight back. Her own green-maned horse had disappeared, and the horses of the others were scattered and running wild due to the sandstorm. Perhaps Batu had managed to gather some of them, but there were still some scattered around.

The two were extremely lucky to see Zhao Changhe's horse running aimlessly nearby. It wasn't his Treading Snow Black Steed; that horse was still at San Niang's inn. This was Batu's horse, not exceptional in itself, but it had all their luggage on it, which was a pleasant surprise.

Zhao Changhe hurried over to grab the horse and then turned to look at Yue Hongling.

Yue Hongling's face was expressionless.

Without a word, Zhao Changhe reached out and lifted her onto the horse.

Yue Hongling bit her lip and turned her head, reaching out to pull him closer. "Come here."

Zhao Changhe didn't hesitate, reaching out to grab her hand and then using the momentum to leap onto the horse, holding her from behind.

Even mounting a horse left him feeling almost exhausted, and his wounds were still bleeding profusely.

In the distance, a military force was approaching, and the sound of shouting and killing was already ringing in their ears. "That's Yue Hongling! She's injured! Don't let her escape!"

"Capture that couple!"

"Prepare to shoot arrows!"

"Go!"  Enduring the pain, Yue Hongling pulled the reins and urged the horse to gallop away.

Zhao Changhe's hand wrapped around her waist, and he leaned in to examine her wound. Suddenly, he tore away the fabric around her wound, revealing the complete injury and the fair skin around it.

Yue Hongling knew what he was doing and allowed him to proceed in silence.

Before long, the sensation of the water pouch being poured over her wound caused Yue Hongling to scream in pain, and her elbow moved instinctively, trapping Zhao Changhe's head under her armpit.

Zhao Changhe: "..."

Yue Hongling quickly released him. "Sorry... does it hurt?"

Zhao Changhe: "...It doesn't hurt, but it stinks."

Yue Hongling: "?"

All the embarrassment and remorse in her heart vanished, and before she could even scold him, a cool sensation spread over her wound as the medicine was applied. Then, layers of soft cloth were wrapped around it, alleviating much of the pain.

Yue Hongling felt a bit dazed, wondering how many times she had been injured in front of him and had him help her with the bandaging. She was starting to lose count.

Every time she was at her weakest, he was always there, taking care of her. It was as if the heavens were whispering in her ear, "Yue Hongling, one person is not enough. You need a companion to face the world together."

The difference this time was that he was much more capable of helping her, almost like a main force, although his mouth had become less sweet and he would even curse at people.

Lost in thought, Zhao Changhe had already finished tending to his own wound. He let out a long sigh and took the bow slung over Yue Hongling's body for his own use.

Turning his head, he saw that the military force was about to catch up to them.

How could a horse carrying two people outrun them?

Zhao Changhe drew his bow and arrow, and with a "whoosh," a leader in the enemy ranks fell, causing a commotion in the army.

They were now half the distance away from the others...

"This won't work. We can't replicate the process of escaping with Yangyang back then. It was just one person chasing us, but this is an entire army." Taking advantage of the temporary hesitation of the enemy, Zhao Changhe urgently said, "Head north, along the edge of the mountain, towards the distant mountain range."

Yue Hongling said, "It's useless to seek cover in the mountain forest... I've been there before, and it's all barren mountains with no trees. They might be even more familiar with the terrain over there than we are."

"It's not about seeking cover among the trees. There's a secret place over there that others might not know about."

Yue Hongling's eyes lit up, and despite the pain in her abdomen, she urged the horse to speed up and gallop away.

Zhao Changhe took three more arrows and strung them together, releasing all three at once, causing three more enemies to fall.

But in just a moment, the others were about to enter shooting range and were preparing to fire their arrows.

Zhao Changhe pressed against the horse's back and suddenly leaped backward.

As the sun set in the west, a hawk soared in the sky, and a blood-red long knife slashed through the yellow sand, falling heavily.

Heads flew, and bodies fell.

Taking advantage of the momentary confusion, Zhao Changhe snatched a horse, turned around, and raised his blade once more.

The spears that were thrust at him broke in two, and the entire body of a Huren soldier was cut in half, splattering Zhao Changhe with blood, making him look like a demon.

The terrifying effect of causing both gods and buddhas to scatter spread without restraint, causing widespread panic and the horses to neigh in terror.

"Anyone who blocks my path will die!"  Taking advantage of the momentary confusion, Zhao Changhe charged forward and caught up with Yue Hongling.

As Yue Hongling rode, she turned back to look, and the figure in the sunset was imprinted in her heart. A lone rider with a single blade, bathed in blood, yet shining like a god.

It wasn't until Zhao Changhe was almost catching up to Yue Hongling that the Huren soldiers finally regained their senses. A leader angrily shouted, "What are you all afraid of! He's just one person! Shoot him with one arrow each and turn him into a hedgehog!"

The military force began to move again, but their momentum was slightly weaker than before.

Gasping for breath, Zhao Changhe realized that the terrifying effect he had just used was not very effective against skilled opponents...

Unfortunately, his previous actions had seemed impressive, but in reality, he was injured, and at this moment, the pain from his wound was so intense that he almost didn't have the strength to urge the horse forward again. He could only silently adjust his breathing, hoping that the healing power of the Six Harmonies Divine Art would be stronger.

Before long, the military force was once again within shooting range, and the leader raised his hand, preparing to give the order to shoot...

Swoosh!  A throwing dart pierced his forehead from an impossible distance, and before the leader could finish his sentence, a bloody hole appeared on his forehead, and he fell from his horse.

It was only then that people remembered that there was more than just one person; besides Zhao Changhe, there was also the even more powerful Yue Hongling! This is a freak who can throw hidden weapons farther than others can shoot arrows, a master of the Human List!

Yue Hongling swung her whip to the side, pointing at the army: "Whoever dares to pursue further will end up like this man!"

The generals exchanged glances, all slowing their pace. They knew full well that if they swarmed these two, they wouldn't stand a chance, but who would be willing to rush forward and take a dart first?

These bandits, male and female, were somewhat terrifying.

Someone said, "We don't need to actually surround them, just press them from behind. They're injured and have no place to tend to their wounds. Sooner or later, they'll fall from their horses."

Immediately, someone agreed, "That's right, the commotion here is so big, other tribes will get the news... For instance, Chi Li is also looking for Yue Hongling, and they might arrive soon. We just need to maintain the pressure..."

The setting sun had completely sunk below the horizon, and the stars and moon shone brightly in the sky.

Under the moonlight, the scene was extremely bizarre. Thousands of soldiers followed just two people, yet they all tacitly maintained a distance of an arrow's shot, never getting any closer.

In a sense, their thinking was not wrong. Maintaining pressure was enough. The man and woman were clearly seriously injured, their wounds merely patched up hastily, which was obviously insufficient. As long as the pressure continued, preventing them from stopping to rest and heal, they would eventually faint on their horses.

Even if they didn't, the commotion here could attract others to come and look. As long as someone like Chi Li approached, everything would be over.

In fact, at this moment, Yue Hongling and Zhao Changhe were both nearly at their limit, barely hanging on by a thread, heading towards their last hope. Without this hope to cling to, they might have already given up.

The mountain range was extremely distant, barely visible as a faint outline in the daylight, and even less visible in the night, making one feel all the more desolate and empty.

But fortunately, they had each other.

He was by her side.

She was by his side.

The two rode side by side, glancing at each other inadvertently, then quickly looking away.

A difficult-to-describe emotion rose in their hearts simultaneously, a feeling of having someone to rely on, no matter which side.

With you by my side, there is nothing to fear.

After an unknown amount of time, the night grew so deep that the road was nearly invisible. Faint sounds of horse hooves seemed to approach from ahead.

Yue Hongling's expression changed slightly, and she whispered, "There are people blocking the way ahead."

As if drawn by a magnet, the army behind them suddenly accelerated.

Zhao Changhe looked up, the mountain was now in sight.

He quickly pulled out the map given by Yuan Xing, compared it briefly, and then steered his horse to the northwest: "This way."

The two spurred their horses into a gallop, breaking out to the northwest amidst the convergence of the pursuing army and the lone rider ahead, and darted straight into the mountains.

Chi Li soared in, only to see two exhausted horses lying dead on the mountain path, with no sign of the riders.

Chi Li pointed angrily at the army leaders who followed: "Thousands of soldiers chasing two injured people, and you let them escape into the mountains! You're all useless!"

The general replied awkwardly, "No matter, we know these mountains well. We'll block all the key paths. They're short on food and medicine; they can't escape!"

Chi Li took a deep breath and looked up at the mountains.

The night mountains were pitch black, like a shadowy abyss that devoured everything.

A streak of golden light appeared in the sky, and the Chaos Chronicles revealed a new chapter:

"In early September, Yue Hongling and Zhao Changhe fought Tiger Lie amidst a sandstorm, both sustaining injuries, with Tiger Lie fleeing with a severed arm."

Zhao Changhe: "?"

So Tiger Lie isn't dead? If someone on the Human List died, there would definitely be a succession of ranks. Batu, you iron waste, your mother, how could you not kill him?

Batu, who was on the run, glanced at the unconscious Tiger Lie tied behind his horse and sighed, "The Chaos Chronicles can indeed be deceived. Brothers, let's return to our tribe and launch a surprise attack on the Wild Wolf Tribe! The rise of the War Lion starts today!"

Tiger Lie was also one of the tribal leaders, and for Batu, capturing him alive was far more significant than killing him. Zhao Changhe hadn't considered this.

Batu wasn't foolish today.

But the Chaos Chronicles weren't just about this one event. Based on the previous experience with sending Yangyang, the Chaos Chronicles would wait until an entire battle was over before giving a complete assessment:

"Zhao Changhe, at the seventh level of Xuan Guan, with a body full of serious injuries, shot arrows and cleaved with his sword, slaying generals and seizing horses, breaking through the formation and returning. A thousand soldiers were terrified, none daring to pursue."

"The Hidden Dragon List has changed."

"Hidden Dragon Rank Six, Zhao Changhe."

"The setting sun is buried by the yellow sand, and the long river reflects the evening glow."

Chi Li frowned and looked up, somewhat puzzled.

In this assessment... was it about Yue Hongling, or was she not involved at all?
