Chapter 068 – Not alone

Just as Hong Tao and his group were driving back to the small courtyard to have lunch, Jiao San and Linna also opened their lunch boxes on the pedestrian bridge at the intersection of Xinjie Street and began to enjoy their meal.

After a morning of searching, they made a big harvest. They found a total of five signs of human survivors' activities, and they even saw living people in two of them, more than one!

The survivors also saw them. After hearing the broadcast, they climbed onto the roof and waved their bright clothes. Unfortunately, there were too many houses around and too many zombies. They couldn't get too close, so they could only take note of the location and leave in a hurry.

"You've known Hong Brother for a long time, haven't you?" Linna asked while eating the food in her lunch box. She remembered the man who claimed to be 50 years old but no one believed. She had spent the morning with Jiao San and felt that he was just okay, but he was far less attractive or mysterious than that man.

"It's been over ten years... Do you want to know how old he really is?" Jiao San chuckled. "I can tell you responsibly, he's really over 50. It's just that this old guy seems to get younger as he gets older. Time doesn't seem to affect him much. Look at me, I used to be a handsome young man. Now, standing next to him, I can't tell who's older. Damn it!"

Jiao San didn't intend to hide the truth about Hong Tao from Linna. It would be best if he could say that Hong Tao was 60 years old. But as he spoke, his true feelings of envy and jealousy couldn't help but surface. Whether he had any hatred, only he knew.

"Why does he have so many tools at home, as well as armor and strange weapons? Don't you find it strange? It seems like he's very well-prepared, even considering heating in the courtyard."

Although Jiao San was at least ten years older than Linna, when it came to observing people's expressions, he was almost transparent in Linna's eyes. A few words, a few smiles, and he could easily be fooled. Many men thought they understood what they were thinking, but most of them were wrong, including his godfather.

"Hehe, when I first met him, this guy took three women to cross the uninhabited area. Later, he took us to do many things that we wouldn't dare to think about in normal times. I was more surprised than you at that time. I always thought he was a foreign spy. You know, he can make his own bugs, and he can open the locks of anti-theft doors with a few moves. Impressive, right?"

Jiao San didn't objectively hate Hong Tao. He was always suppressed and couldn't lift his head. He had a kind of inexplicable resentment. At the same time, he had to admire Hong Tao's skills. Let's not talk about anything else. He could make Liu Ruoyu treat him as an honored guest, and his secretaries wouldn't say a word even if they were messed with. There was no one in their circle who dared to compare.

"And then?" Linna put down her lunch box and looked around. She was very satisfied with the place she had chosen. Resting on the pedestrian bridge, she could overlook the movements of all the nearby zombies and wasn't afraid of them rushing up. There were four staircases at both ends of the bridge, and there were isolation belts on both sides of the road below. The zombies didn't have the intelligence to surround them from all sides.

"It was only later that I gradually understood that he didn't deliberately learn those skills. This old guy is a monster. He doesn't like going to restaurants, shopping malls, nightclubs, or traveling. Even beautiful women are just skeletons in his eyes. It's almost impossible to deceive him... unless he pretends to be confused for fun. Those things you mentioned are just the things he usually messes around with. Besides fishing, he likes to play with various tools at home and make broken chairs, tables, and beds to show off and give away. I have a small table at home that he gave me. He said he spent over two weeks making it, but one day when I went shopping with my wife at IKEA, I found that they had the same kind of table, almost identical, and it only cost a little over 2000. Two weeks, what a waste! You haven't seen him fixing cars yet. As long as he hears that someone's car is broken, he goes over and says he can fix it. Eight out of ten times, he ends up making it worse. Have you seen my motorcycle? He broke the same model and I had to replace the engine in the end."

Although Jiao San had never lived with Hong Tao, after nearly ten years of contact and playing together in the same club, he had some understanding. Linna's questions were almost the same as the ones he had before, but after investigation, he had denied them all.

"He doesn't like women..." Linna was a little dumbfounded. How could there be such a man in the world? He didn't like things that brought enjoyment and only liked to do tiring work. Even if he did tiring work, he didn't do it well and was always complained about.

The most unbelievable thing for her was his attitude towards women. Could it be that this man was a eunuch? If that was the case, she would have to give up on him.

"It's not that he doesn't like them... How should I put it? Yes, it should be called not being attached. If he likes someone, he'll get to know them more. If he doesn't like someone, no matter how beautiful they are, it's useless... Hey, why are you so curious about him?" Jiao San realized halfway through his answer and figured out the taste. So you came to me to inquire about Hong Tao's private life. It seems like you have ulterior motives.

"Hey, I'm just asking casually. Why don't you tell me about your own story?" Linna didn't even lift her eyelids and knew what Jiao San was thinking. She smoothly changed the topic to something that this man liked to talk about and listen to.

"...Damn it! Shh, don't look up, look over there!" Jiao San felt much more comfortable in his heart when a woman was willing to listen to his past. He put down his lunch box and was about to take a sip of his drink when he immediately lowered his head again. At the same time, he grabbed Linna's shoulder and pointed to the west with his finger.

It can be hard to make great work when its stolen from bit.ly/3iBfjkV.

"..." In fact, Linna didn't need Jiao San to point it out. She also heard the roar of engines coming from the west. Two large trucks came from the main street in the west. They weren't driving very fast, and there were people standing in the cargo compartments, constantly shouting to both sides.

"They're luring and killing the zombies!" Linna quickly understood what these two trucks were doing. The front truck deliberately attracted the zombies on both sides of the street, and then the truck behind followed and crashed into them.

"What should we do? Should we run or go up and ask?" Jiao San wasn't blind. After experiencing Sun Jianshe's encounter, encountering so many living people all of a sudden made him feel complicated. For a while, he couldn't make up his mind."Don't move yet, count their numbers, observe more, and let Hong Brother decide when we get back... Can the motorcycle be started at any time?" Linna was indeed more resourceful than Jiao San, and more meticulous, already considering how to escape.

"Don't worry, they won't be able to catch up with us in the city... They don't have guns, do they?" Jiao San was about to boast about his driving skills, but then he remembered what happened to Sun Jian, and immediately chickened out. No matter how fast a motorcycle can run, it's not faster than a bullet. If they get hit, it's all over.

"So far, they haven't been discovered. It seems they want to clean up all the zombies that can move freely on both sides of this street. Crushing them with a vehicle is a good method. It's a pity we don't have a big truck, and we don't know where they got theirs from." Linna was not only meticulous but also more composed than Jiao San. As the two vehicles got closer and closer, she remained calm and collected.

"I guess it's from a construction site. These kinds of vehicles can only enter the city at night, usually for construction sites." Jiao San had already packed up the lunch box and the thermal box, ready to run towards the motorcycle under the bridge at any time.

"Look, they're turning... Let me see, this should be... Zhao Dengyu Road... Let's go, we should head back, we can't go west of this line for now!"

Linna didn't move. A few minutes later, the two vehicles turned south one after the other and soon disappeared from sight. Only then did she calmly take out a map, draw a line on it, and then get up and walk towards the motorcycle.

They thought they had to turn back halfway because of an unexpected incident, but when they saw the small courtyard, not only was there an off-road vehicle parked at the door, but two enclosures had been set up by the lake, and people were showering with lake water inside.

"Brother, did you find more survivors?" Jiao San was too familiar with this situation, but with Linna by his side, he didn't dare to stare at the enclosure. He parked the motorcycle and rushed into the yard.

"Hey, you two are back so early? Good, taking advantage of my absence to slack off, huh! Linna, you're not doing a good job as a guide, not only did you not lead the team well, but you also colluded with this guy!"

Hong Tao was leisurely leaning on a recliner, drinking tea and waiting for lunch. Hearing Jiao San's voice, he immediately started criticizing, but his focus was not on Jiao San, but Linna. This was his matchmaking strategy, waiting for Jiao San to defend Linna, and then together they would make up stories to fool him, their relationship would progress further.
