Chapter 28 – Go to your kung fu dream

When he was young, Gao Guang also dreamed of martial arts and being a hero.

But ever since his master was knocked out by a Sanda coach who challenged him, Gao Guang's dream has been shattered.

It's a sad story.

Gao Guang had a master who won second place in a provincial competition, and his master opened a martial arts school near his home.

The school had been around for many years, peacefully coexisting with the nearby taekwondo, Muay Thai, and Sanda classes.

Looking back now, it was truly a peaceful era.

Until an ambitious Sanda coach appeared and disrupted the peace of the martial arts world.

A master of Sanda, a third-place winner in the city competition, attempted to unify the martial arts world and monopolize the training market for Gao Guang's elementary school, so he launched a challenge.

The first to be challenged was the taekwondo school, and the taekwondo coach was kicked to the ground by the Sanda third-place winner and admitted defeat.

The second to be challenged was the Muay Thai school, and the Sanda third-place winner beat the boxer who claimed to be Thai until he cried out in Chinese, revealing himself to be a dark-skinned person from Yunnan.

The third to be challenged was the martial arts school where Gao Guang studied. In retrospect, Gao Guang felt that if his master knew that the Sanda third-place winner had already challenged two training classes, he wouldn't have impulsively accepted the challenge.

A martial arts runner-up was knocked out by a Sanda third-place winner with just one punch, and the worst part was that he was wearing gloves and protective gear.

Gao Guang witnessed the entire process and learned a lesson: routine is just routine, martial arts routines should be performed beautifully, stylishly, and elegantly.

As the student who had trained with his master for the longest time and the best student, Gao Guang was the most grief-stricken.

Gao Guang also learned that martial artists must use their virtues and logic to persuade others, and never mention practical combat, or they will get into a fight.

But while Gao Guang's martial arts dream was shattered, John's martial arts dream was still alive, and he had an inexplicable faith in martial arts.

Now that they were back in Los Angeles, they hadn't received their money yet, and they didn't know if Arturo could survive. John was eager to see Gao Guang's skills, but he didn't do any real work and was obsessed with martial arts, which was unreasonable.

Since it was unreasonable, Gao Guang decided to wake John up from his martial arts dream with practical action!

Gao Guang wore a white silk martial arts uniform, a pair of small white shoes, and held a long stick. He was calm and composed, giving off a sense of detachment from the world.

The long stick was a willow branch, uneven in thickness, and slippery after peeling off the bark. However, since there was no suitable martial arts stick available, he had to use a willow branch with good flexibility instead.

Gao Guang lightly tapped the long stick, raised it up, and performed a starting move of "lifting the sky with fire," saying, "Watch closely, I'll only do it once."

As soon as he finished speaking, the long stick began to dance, like a white mist rising from the ground, impenetrable and invulnerable. It was like a dragon swimming and a tiger roaring. After watching it for a long time, one would feel dizzy and fascinated.

When the long stick reached its climax, Gao Guang threw it out, flipped over, caught the falling long stick with his hand, swept horizontally with his left hand, swept vertically with his right hand, leaped into the air, and smashed down with his full strength, demonstrating his years of hard work.

After finishing the martial arts competition routine, it was a pity that the grass was too soft, and the final strike did not produce a loud sound, which was somewhat regrettable.

Gao Guang stood up straight with the stick, and applause erupted.

"Beautiful! It's too beautiful!"

John whistled and continued to applaud vigorously, looking around with a proud expression, saying, "Who dares to challenge me? Who dares not to submit?"Frank applauded vigorously, and George looked surprised. Although Rubber was also applauding, he was dissatisfied and said, "We agreed to fight without weapons, how can he use a stick?"

John immediately said, "Don't use a stick, teach him a lesson with your fists!"

Gao Guang frowned. John was the one who had faith in martial arts, yet he insisted on having him and Rubber fight. But John had a valid reason: Rubber and Gao Guang had similar body weights, while John's weight exceeded Gao Guang's by too much. However, Gao Guang wasn't afraid of a big weight difference. He just wanted to spar with John privately.

Unfortunately, he couldn't back out now.

"Let's go inside for the fight, not outside."

The stick performance couldn't be displayed in the gym, so Gao Guang came out first to do a set, not for any reason, but to lay the groundwork for losing later. This was called being unprepared for battle.

The group returned to the gym. Rubber took a deep breath, clenched his fists, and said loudly, "Do we need protective gear?"

"Of course we do!" Gao Guang picked up the gear and calmly said, "Put on all the gear, stop at the designated point. You know what that means, right?"

The gym had a full set of free combat protective gear. Gao Guang put on a helmet and armor, and John picked up boxing gloves. He looked forward to the fight and said, "Can't we use boxing gloves? Kung fu can't be fully utilized with gloves."

"Gloves are necessary."

Gao Guang put his hands in the gloves and asked John to tighten them. He held his hands in front of his eyes and shouted at Rubber, "Come on!"

Rubber also put on all his protective gear. When he heard Gao Guang's shout, he rushed forward and threw a right jab at Gao Guang's face.

Gao Guang backed away and dodged the punch, but Rubber followed up with a left hook that hit Gao Guang's head like a hammer.

Thankfully, he was wearing protective gear.

When Gao Guang fell heavily onto the mat, he had only one thought in his mind. On the other hand, Rubber, who had only thrown a probing punch, stood still.

"Stop!"

Frank shouted loudly and immediately stepped forward to separate Rubber. Rubber spread his hands and innocently said, "I was just probing. I haven't... I haven't thrown a heavy punch yet!"

Just one punch, and Gao Guang felt like he saw stars. When the stars disappeared from his eyes, he saw John.

John looked astonished and disappointed. His expression reminded Gao Guang of his younger self.

The light in his eyes disappeared, and his mouth tightened.

Yes, this was it. This was the moment when dreams shattered.

Gao Guang looked at John with pity, and then mocked him in his own language, "Screw your kung fu dreams."

Now John knew the routine. It was true that he couldn't fight in real combat, and Gao Guang wasn't being modest. He really couldn't fight.

With a long sigh, John shrugged and pointed to Gao Guang, who was lying on the mat and couldn't get up. He said calmly, "You saw it. He really can't fight, but he's obviously better with weapons. Do you understand what I mean? He's good at using weapons. If he had a knife, the result would be different."

Gao Guang was stunned for a moment, and then he exclaimed, "No...shut up!"

Rubber nodded and said, "His weapon skills are indeed more impressive. If a stick also counts as a weapon, using a knife for combat is not a problem. We have practice knives here."Rubber took off his boxing gloves and picked up a rubber practice knife. He flicked it a few times and said, "It's very soft. Come on, don't be afraid. Let me see how you handle a knife."

Gao Guang was about to refuse, but John gave him a fierce warning look.

They had developed some tacit understanding. Gao Guang thought John meant for him to refuse, but he couldn't completely refuse. So John must have wanted him to delay.

Gao Guang wouldn't let John have his way. He immediately said, "No!"

Just then, Frank's phone rang. He told everyone to be quiet and answered the call.

"Hello? Yes, thank you."

Frank hung up and excitedly said, "Good news, the last payment has come in. Guys, we've got all our money!"

"Yay!"

"Awesome!"

Everyone cheered. After Rubber celebrated for a moment, he said to Gao Guang, "Let's compare knives!"

Gao Guang shook his head and said, "No, not now."

Under John's fierce gaze, Gao Guang finally changed his mind, but he needed a reason.

He thought of an excuse and whispered, "I need to rest. I'm not in good shape right now. Um, I need some time to rest."

"Then you have half an hour. Half an hour should be enough, right?" Rubber was impatient, but then Frank's satellite phone rang again.

Everyone was startled by the ringtone. Frank took out the phone and said, "Hello."

He only said hello and nothing more.

After listening for a moment, he suddenly said, "Oh, I see. No problem. I'll come see you right away. See you later."

He hung up and smiled at Gao Guang. "Unfortunately, today's match has to end here. Come out with me."

Rubber was surprised. "Why?"

Gao Guang was curious. "Go out now?"

Frank smiled. "I promised to solve your identity and passport issues. Now is the time. Let's go."

Gao Guang was happy. "I'll change my clothes and come right out."

Frank nodded and waved his hand. "Let's go. We'll split the money when we come back. Disperse now."

Rubber shrugged and left his practice knife behind. George smiled at Gao Guang and left too. Then John grabbed Gao Guang's arm and pulled him up fiercely. "Get up!"

Gao Guang stood up and said angrily, "I told you earlier, look at my swollen face."

John helped him take off his gloves and said fiercely, "Listen to me. I know you can't beat Rubber with a knife, but we can't let that bastard make fun of us. If he makes fun of you, he's insulting me and kung fu. I can't let anyone insult kung fu. Do you understand?"

Looking at John, Gao Guang felt a little ashamed of his kung fu dreams. "But what can we do?"

John said fiercely, "I'll teach you practical short knife fighting techniques. Rubber is far worse than me with a knife. You can do it. You must stab Rubber with a knife because it's about our dignity!"
