Chapter 48 – Gao Guang

Gao Guang waited quietly until the sound of gunfire suddenly rang out.

In the rainforest, even the sound of gunfire couldn't travel too far, and the trees made the sound muffled, making it impossible to determine the direction of the gunfire.

Gao Guang suddenly woke up and instinctively tried to stand up, but quickly crouched down again and whispered to Caps, "We're under fire."

Caps didn't say anything. He closed his eyes and lay motionless on the makeshift stretcher made of clothes.

Gao Guang was suddenly alarmed. He spoke in a trembling voice, "Caps, Caps..."

Caps still didn't move. Gao Guang cautiously reached out his left hand and placed it in front of Caps' nose, but he didn't notice any breath from Caps.

Gao Guang's heart began to chill, but he still refused to give up. He put his hand on Caps' neck and found that Caps still had a pulse.

He's not dead, that's good enough.

Gao Guang breathed a sigh of relief, then saw Caps open his eyes and stare at him blankly. "Why are you touching me?"

"You... f***! Don't pretend to be dead if you're not!"

Gao Guang was angry, but Caps closed his eyes again and weakly said, "I want to sleep. I really don't have the energy."

Just then, Gao Guang heard Rubber's voice on the radio.

"I can't see the enemy. I can't find their exact location!"

"I can't see them either. We can't suppress fire and waste bullets. Captain, what do we do?"

Rubber and George's voices were urgent, but Frank's voice was calm. "Get closer. Don't disperse. We have to get closer together!"

Gao Guang was stunned. It seemed that the captain and his two men couldn't use a surprise attack to take out the enemy from behind.

A surprise attack was good, but if the enemy was in the dark, the meaning of a surprise attack would be greatly reduced.

Now, the enemy was in the dark, and so was he. Both sides were cautious enough and unable to detect each other's position. This kind of battle was too disgusting.

Although it was impossible to distinguish the range by sound, judging the distance was still possible. Listening to the sound, the distance of the engagement was very close, which meant that Rubber's judgment was correct and the enemy was really hiding in the position he had determined.

Gao Guang picked up his pistol and thought for a moment before saying to Caps, "Do you know how I take out the enemy?"

Caps opened his eyes this time and weakly asked, "How?"

"Just charge in and shoot them in the head at close range. That way, you can definitely take them out."

"Huh, that's really... you're serious!"

Gao Guang stood up and began to slowly advance forward while bending down. Although Caps was almost dead, he still looked at Gao Guang's back in disbelief and said, "You're really crazy, hey!"

Ignoring Caps, Gao Guang whispered into his earpiece, "I'm attacking the enemy from behind. Be careful, I'm coming!"

The communication channel fell silent. After a moment, Rubber said in a very helpless tone, "We shouldn't have let the mad dog watch over Caps. He... he's insane!"Gao Guang didn't rush to run. He still slowly approached and finally identified a position where someone was shooting from, less than twenty meters away from him, and someone was whispering something.

Without accelerating, Gao Guang just became more careful. Then, as he was cautiously advancing, he suddenly heard rustling sounds ahead.

Gao Guang immediately stopped and watched as a person in green military uniform stood up from a pile of grass, looked towards the direction of the gunfire for a moment, and then crouched back down.

The distance was about three meters, and the plants hid the enemy well while also blocking their vision. Even though Gao Guang was within arm's reach, the enemy didn't notice him.

"No one here. Maybe I misheard. They've already engaged in a fight, so someone should have passed by here," one person whispered.

"The camp said there are only four enemies. I don't think they can separate. Let's not move and just wait here," another person replied.

"What do you think they are?"

"I don't know. The officer said they are American spies."

"Is America going to fight us? I think they're here to grab territory. Who knows."

The two people ahead began to chat quietly, and after listening for a while, Gao Guang decided to take action.

Continuing to sneak was impossible. Gao Guang suddenly stood up and rushed out.

When Gao Guang suddenly stood up, the two people kneeling in the grass turned around in surprise, and their guns also turned towards him. But once Gao Guang stood up, they wouldn't have a chance to shoot at themselves.

Almost facing the nose of the enemy on the right, Gao Guang fired a shot and instantly killed him. Then, with his left hand, he grabbed the remaining enemy's gun barrel, and with his right hand, he directly pointed the gun at the remaining enemy's chin.

"Don't move..."

Gao Guang wanted to capture him alive for questioning, but his enemy was fierce and fast, or maybe he simply didn't react to what had happened. After realizing that his gun couldn't aim at Gao Guang, he immediately let go of his rifle and grabbed Gao Guang's right arm holding the gun.

Before his arm was pushed away, Gao Guang helplessly fired a shot, and the bullet hit the enemy's head from the chin, splattering blood all over Gao Guang's face.

Gao Guang was stunned for a moment, then he put the gun back in its holster, picked up the M16 rifle in the enemy's hand with both hands, and aimed at the ferns in front of him where gunfire was coming from.

The recoil wasn't very strong. Gao Guang swept back and forth, firing all the bullets in the magazine. Then he threw away the rifle and picked up another one beside him, aiming at an enemy who suddenly appeared under a tree on his left.

Bullets flew horizontally, and the grass around Gao Guang began to break off. While they were both firing, Gao Guang was crawling forward, and the enemy was dodging behind the tree. The battle was chaotic, with gunfire happening at a distance of only twenty to thirty meters. This wasn't a test of marksmanship because anyone who could shoot could hit their target at such close range. Now, it was a test of eyesight because every figure was blurry and fleeting.

If only they had grenades. Jungle warfare was where grenades were most effective.

Gao Guang looked down at the two bodies beside him and even searched one of them, but there were no grenades. He had been operating in the jungle for a while now, yet he didn't have the best weapon for jungle warfare. He didn't know if it was because the guerrilla organization he was working for was too poor or too stupid.

Gao Guang smashed through the bushes and then stood up again. He didn't dare to aim and shoot carefully. Instead, he raised his rifle over his head and blindly fired until he ran out of bullets. When he tried to pull the trigger again, he realized that he had already run out of bullets. He was surprised to find that he had made the mistake that most novices make, which was to keep pulling the trigger even when there were no bullets left.

The level of military enthusiasts was only this much. One simple question was what to do if you missed your target when shooting. The simplest answers were to shoot again or to get closer and shoot.

Gao Guang quickly ran out and threw away his rifle when he realized he didn't know how to use it. He chose his more familiar handgun and ended the battle in his own way.

It was a well-known fact that the more afraid you were of death on the battlefield, the faster you died. In the face of the desperate situation of either killing the enemy or being killed, it was best to be brave.

Gao Guang charged straight towards the enemy's position, and when the enemy appeared from behind a tree to observe his position, he was surprised to see Gao Guang charging towards him.

This was an unreasonable way of fighting. When the soldier aimed his rifle at Gao Guang in shock and fired, Gao Guang had already fired two shots.

The enemy couldn't understand this kind of fighting even in death.

Gao Guang ran past the dead enemy and continued to run forward, jumping and bouncing, because he didn't know how to advance while shooting at the same time. He didn't even know where the enemy was. If someone fired a burst of bullets at him from the bushes, he would be dead. But for him, the battle was simple. Find the enemy, shoot, and kill.

Gao Guang heard gunfire and saw someone firing at one side from the bushes. The enemy saw him and quickly adjusted the direction of his gun towards him. With a flick of his wrist, Gao Guang fired a shot, but missed. He fired two more shots, still missing, while his enemy fired only one shot and then frantically began reloading with a terrified shout.

Gao Guang fired another shot, and finally hit his enemy with the fourth shot, as the distance between them was less than five meters.

If you can't hit, get closer and shoot again. How simple.

Without stopping, Gao Guang continued to run forward, but now there were no more gunshots, and no one was firing at him. He felt he had run too far, so he turned back to try to find the remaining enemies. It was then that he heard Rubber's voice on the intercom, "Mad Dog, where are you, Mad Dog! Where are you!"

Gasping for breath, Gao Guang replied, "I'm...not sure, I took out five people! I'm still looking for the rest of the enemies."

"No need to look, there are only six of us left. Captain tried using himself as bait, but there's no one left," Rubber quickly said, hesitated for a moment, and then added, "No, maybe you're the bait."

Gao Guang stopped in his tracks, panting heavily as he leaned on his knees. He looked around and said, "I can't see you guys, and I don't know where I am. Fire a shot so I can tell which direction to go."

After a bit of time, Gao Guang finally met up with Frank and his crew again. When he saw their complex expressions, he said seriously, "Don't call me Mad Dog anymore. Do you know what highlight means? That's right, it means Gao Guang is always in the spotlight. You can call me that from now on."

Rubber scratched his head and said, "I admit, this is your highlight. I've never done anything like this in my life, and I never thought I could do it. I can only say, well done, Mad Dog."
