Chapter 97 – Tracking

Today was a busy day.

In the morning, I went out to work, and in the afternoon, I started rushing from Los Angeles to Tijuana. By the evening, I had already arrived in Tijuana and received a full set of combat equipment.

Then, shortly after receiving the combat equipment, I received a call saying that they needed Gao Guang and the others' support.

This compact and compressed action route made it necessary for Danny to ask for Gao Guang and the others' help. Otherwise, even if Danny had an extra hour, he probably wouldn't need their assistance.

Now Gao Guang couldn't believe that everything happened naturally. He could only think that, as John said, Danny intentionally let Patrov go, and then, because of the parking receipt he found, Danny quickly completed the negotiation with Renato and immediately sent someone to Tijuana. The difference was that instead of simply tracking Patrov, it became a pre-set ambush.

Gao Guang didn't know what to say. He felt complicated now. From a purely business perspective, Danny's actions were to maximize his own interests. But if it came to professional ethics, then what Danny did was a bit unethical.

"I've told you many times, you always have to be on guard against people like Danny, so you don't get sold without even knowing it..."

John was still nagging, but now Gao Guang felt annoyed by John for the first time.

It wasn't until the car reached the main road near the border checkpoint that Gao Guang turned on the walkie-talkie and started calling according to Danny's frequency, finally shutting John up.

"King calling Hound, please respond, over."

The car continued to drive forward, and after ten seconds, Gao Guang held the walkie-talkie again and said, "King calling Hound, please respond, over."

Continuing to call like this, when it reached the seventh time, a crackling sound suddenly came from the walkie-talkie, "Hound received, near the roundabout near Tijuana Hotel, approach me as soon as possible, over."

"King received, over."

Tracking was mobile, and the meeting point for Gao Guang and the others was also mobile. So after establishing contact with the radio, Gao Guang first looked at the navigation on his phone, then checked his own location, and immediately said, "There's a roundabout ahead of us... no, we passed it, turn around."

The highway was northwest-southeast, and Gao Guang and the others were driving from south to north. Now they needed to turn around and go south, but the problem was that there was a wide green belt separating the two roads, so it was impossible to turn around.

John was driving now, and after hearing Gao Guang's words, he calmed down and said, "Don't worry, we can't be in a hurry at this time."

John drove forward for a while, entered the roundabout, and then switched to the opposite lane, continuing to drive in the direction Gao Guang indicated.

"A straight-line distance of two kilometers, the signal is a bit weak, lost contact."

Gao Guang was a bit impatient, but John remained calm and said, "It's normal, the electromagnetic environment in the city is too complicated, and there are many buildings. It's normal to lose signal at this distance."

The car accelerated, and suddenly, a call came from the walkie-talkie.

"Hound calling King, over."

The person calling sounded very impatient, and Gao Guang quickly said, "King received, over."

"Fox is driving north to south along the main road, catch up as soon as possible."

"King understood, over."

Gao Guang looked at John, and John sighed and said, "Well, it seems like it's just us."

"What do you mean?"

"It means that only we can help. Otherwise, why would the Hound specifically call us if there were many people available?"

Speaking of this, John suddenly frowned, "Something seems off. If Danny had planned everything in advance, there shouldn't be a need for us to track. Hasn't he been following Patrov all along? Is that possible?"

Gao Guang anxiously said, "Don't worry about why. Let's catch up quickly!"

"No, it's not like that. We're maintaining the correct direction now. If we go too fast, we might attract unnecessary trouble, like severe speeding or accidents. Then we won't be able to make it. Right now, we're not rushing into battle. We're in the role of trackers, so we need to be steady and make sure we don't expose ourselves. Listen, being a tracker isn't just about speed. Being able to sustain the pursuit is more important than simply being fast."

This was probably leading by example. John explained in detail how to do it and why it should be done this way.

The speed increased a bit, but it was still within a reasonable range. Gao Guang was really anxious, but after hearing John's explanation, he was able to suppress his impatience and leave everything to John.

Just then, the walkie-talkie suddenly said urgently, "Hound calling King, answer quickly, over!"

"King received, over."

"The Fox suddenly turned around! He's driving against traffic on the highway, I can't chase him anymore! The Fox is driving north to south along the main road..."

John suddenly turned the steering wheel to the left, slammed on the brakes, and without waiting for the car to come to a complete stop, he turned at the maximum speed required for a U-turn and directly turned onto the opposite lane.

The walkie-talkie continued urgently, "The Fox has returned to the correct lane. He's counter-tracking. We can't chase him anymore. It's a black Toyota Sienna MPV, license plate number F55_HTT. Can you take over the tracking? Tell me quickly if you can take over the tracking!"

Gao Guang stared at John in astonishment, and John whispered, "What are you doing? He can hear you. Put the walkie-talkie on your lap and speak. Now, don't make any movements that might expose us!"

Gao Guang put the walkie-talkie on his lap, making sure that the angle of the walkie-talkie couldn't be seen from outside the car window, and pressed the transmit button, urgently saying, "King received, we have completed the turn, now driving south to north, license plate number received, over."

Somehow, Gao Guang was extremely nervous now, even more nervous than when he was about to break into a house knowing there were enemies inside.

"Hound received, very good, very good... We'll find a place to turn around. Now you are the main trackers, and we will cooperate with you in the pursuit, over."

The Hound's words revealed a strong sense of relief, but Gao Guang became even more nervous. He couldn't help but turn his head to look out the left window. At this moment, John said, "Look ahead, don't look around. Suddenly turning around and driving against traffic are common tactics to shake off pursuers. Patrov may not have noticed someone following him, but we have to act normal. It's enough as long as he passes us. You don't need to look left or right, it's useless."

Gao Guang looked straight ahead, with the walkie-talkie on his lap. Then, he saw a black Sienna pass them on the left side. The speed wasn't very fast.

The license plate number was correct, and the car model was correct. If Patrov was really in the car, then he was testing whether someone was following him with this U-turn.

John finally became nervous. He trembled and said, "Notify the Hound that we're following."

Their car was a Volkswagen sedan, also with a Tijuana license plate. In the streets of Tijuana, it was one of the most common car models. As long as they didn't behave unusually, it wouldn't attract anyone's attention.

Gao Guang didn't pick up the walkie-talkie. He just left it on his lap and said to John, "King calling Hound, we are following the Fox, driving south to north, over."

Mike in the back suddenly said, "So we're tracking? Guys, this is so exciting! I've never been this excited before!"

Ignoring Mike, Gao Guang instinctively lowered his voice and said to John, "Shouldn't we make a call to Danny for backup? Can we rely on just us to keep up with Patrov?"

"It's hard to say. The best way now is to take over the tracking. Have someone waiting ahead, and have someone waiting in the nearby streets. But this requires a large number of personnel and vehicles, and someone to coordinate and command. Only the police can do it. Even if Danny wants to do it, I don't think he can."

After saying that, John suddenly said, "Something's not right. If Danny had prepared everything in advance, we shouldn't be in a situation where we need to track. I can't really understand this situation now. Didn't he keep following Patrov? Is that possible?"

Gao Guang stared at the car in front of them. Now there were already three cars between them and the Sienna, with a distance of about a hundred meters. There were no intersections ahead, but if there was an intersection to turn, it would be easy to lose track.

It was now 9:30 pm, and there were still quite a few cars on the main road in Tijuana. But if they waited a little longer, until 10 o'clock when the number of cars on the road decreased significantly, it would be difficult to keep following like this.

In any case, it was very difficult to keep tracking continuously, but Gao Guang really didn't want to lose sight of the person right in front of him.

Gao Guang anxiously asked, "Should we just keep following like this?"

"Patrov will counter-track. He's not a rookie. Later, he'll drive onto a secluded road where there's no one. If we continue to follow behind, we'll expose ourselves, and everything will be over. So what we need to do is report our position in time and leave the rest to luck."

"Luck?"

John nodded and said, "If you have the ability, rely on your ability. If your ability is not enough, you can only rely on luck. The Hound behind us should change routes now, predict where Patrov might go, and wait for him ahead. But doing this is very difficult, almost impossible technically, so we can only rely on luck."

Since they had to rely on luck, Gao Guang felt a bit more confident because he felt that his luck had been good recently.

Which is more important, the process or the result? I've been struggling with this for a long time, but I'll write about the process...
