Chapter 117 – Position

Gao Guang and Mike were still in the training period, so even after Francisco joined, they continued training the next day. Gao Guang then brought Francisco into the training camp.

The three of them needed to train together, so the plan was to enroll Francisco in a basic training course at the training camp. Then, Gao Guang and Mike could use the facilities and grounds of the training camp with him.

Since training hadn't started yet, they could chat for a while. However, Mike's mentality was a bit unstable. He couldn't describe the feeling, but he didn't quite like Francisco.

Although Mike was younger than Gao Guang, he treated Gao Guang as a buddy. Although he called him "boss," it was more like a habitual nickname, a code name, or just a name. But Mike wouldn't flatter Gao Guang or treat him like an ancestor.

But this Francisco was a master of flattery, to the point of shamelessness.

"My father is the best fighter in the Grillo family. If there's any trouble, my father takes care of it. After my grandfather passed away, my uncle became the head of the Grillo family..."

"Isn't it the clan leader instead of the head of the family?"

"Yes, sir. We usually refer to the leader of the mafia family as the head of the family. My father is the boss of our family, and he is highly respected. But the decision-maker is my uncle."

"Okay, continue."

"Yes, sir. My youngest uncle is very smart, so my grandfather made him the leader of the family. But my uncle was murdered by a rival gang, and then we started retaliating against the rival gang. My father was shot and killed, and my uncle went to prison, sentenced to life imprisonment."

Hearing this, Mike felt a bit uncomfortable.

Firstly, he didn't know who his father was, and secondly, he didn't have a mafia family. So he felt that Francisco's family background was really deep, but he would never admit that he was jealous of Francisco.

Mike couldn't help but say, "Heh, this is America. There are no more mafia families here."

Francisco shook his head and said, "There are, they have always existed. They just started doing legitimate business, different from what you know."

Gao Guang was interested and said, "Tell us more about your younger brother. You said he is smart and also wants to come to America?"

"Yes, sir. My cousin is very smart. He is the only one in our family who got into college. He is a top student in the law department of Milan University. He will graduate this year, but he doesn't plan to develop in Italy. He is applying to Yale Law School, or Stanford, or Harvard Law School. He wants to develop in America, so he needs to study American law. American law is very complicated. He can apply for an LLM degree, which only takes one year, but he wants to get a JD degree, which allows him to become a lawyer directly after graduation."

Coming from a prestigious family, and still studying law. Mike suddenly felt annoyed, so he immediately said, "I'm still studying at the University of Southern California. What's the use?"

USC is also a prestigious school, although its reputation may not be as high as Yale or Harvard, but it is indeed a prestigious school.

Francisco looked surprised and said, "Are you also a law school graduate?"

Mike felt frustrated and waved his hand, saying, "I'm not studying law."

Gao Guang hurriedly said, "Wait a minute, something seems off. I remember you said your cousin is not yet an adult, but now you say he is graduating from college this year?"

Francisco respectfully said, "Yes, sir. My cousin is very smart. He is 23 years old this year, but according to the Grillo family tradition, he has not had his coming-of-age ceremony, so he cannot be considered an adult."

Mike frowned and asked, "What is a coming-of-age ceremony?"

Francisco didn't speak, and Gao Guang was also curious. He asked Francisco, "Yes, what is a coming-of-age ceremony?"

"This is a secret of our family, but since you asked, there is nothing to hide. Um, the person who killed my uncle is still alive. If my cousin doesn't kill his father's killer, he cannot be considered an adult. At least he needs to have a revenge ceremony, even if it fails, but doing nothing is not allowed."

Gao Guang was surprised and said, "Your cousin is a graduate of a prestigious university, but if he wants to come to America, he has to kill his father's killer? Is that right?"

Francisco nodded heavily, with a deep look of resentment, and said, "Yes, sir, that's the problem. My aunt said not to seek revenge, as it would ruin his future. But my cousin believes that he must follow the family tradition and complete the coming-of-age ceremony before he can leave Italy."

Mike couldn't help but say, "What kind of era is this, and there's still such a thing?"Francisco looked at Mike and thought for a moment before saying, "Perhaps you think this is nothing, but for the Italians who have a long history and value family interests, family traditions are important."

Mike looked annoyed and asked, "Are you mocking me?"

"No, I'm just stating the facts," Francisco replied.

Gao Guang could tell that Mike's attitude towards Francisco seemed a bit off today. It was fine yesterday evening, and Francisco was very polite. Gao Guang wondered why Mike seemed hostile towards Francisco.

Gao Guang cleared his throat and asked, "Enough about your cousin, let's talk about you. Are you familiar with indoor combat?"

"Yes, sir. I have received complete training in indoor combat and have had two experiences of residential combat in Baghdad. I even took down a terrorist," Mike replied.

Suddenly, Mike laughed and said, "Just one? Only one? Hahaha, I see."

Francisco rolled his eyes and said, "He's someone who has been in many battles, and there were six people in that house."

"Only six people?"

"They also had bombs."

Mike was taken aback because he had been studying for over two months now and knew that entering a house with bombs was different.

After a moment of silence, Mike suddenly said, "Can you stop always saying 'yes, sir' to everything? It's annoying."

"Are you joking? How can you be disrespectful to the boss? You must respect your boss and follow their orders. This is not only tradition, but also the rule. Do you understand?" Francisco sternly said to Mike.

Mike was also stunned. He opened his mouth and looked confusedly at Gao Guang. Seeing Gao Guang's surprised expression, he suddenly felt that his position was being challenged.

"I do respect the boss...ugh, you don't understand anything. When I was taking bullets for the boss, you didn't even know where you were!" Mike retorted.

Francisco frowned and said, "Is that so? Well, I'm a hired hand, not a bodyguard, but if there's a need to take bullets, I think I can do it."

After saying that, Francisco looked at Gao Guang and said seriously, "Sir, I can be your bodyguard. I can take bullets for you."

The situation now made Gao Guang a little uncomfortable. Why was Francisco so straightforward and strong in expressing his loyalty and attitude? They had only met last night, and even if they were willing to die for a true friend, this was too fast. Gao Guang felt like he hadn't done anything yet.

Things were progressing too quickly, giving a sense of unreality.

Gao Guang didn't know how to respond to Francisco's declaration.

Just then, Thompson finally arrived.

"Is he your new recruit?" Thompson asked, looking at Francisco.

After taking a quick look at Francisco, Thompson casually said, "Normally, I wouldn't let people join in on the training, but today I'll make an exception. It's only for tactical exercises, but I'll give my own suggestions based on your performance. Let's begin."

Opening his folder, Thompson pointed to the nearby activity room and said, "Practice indoor combat in an unfamiliar environment with live ammunition. The goal is to eliminate all the people inside the building. You three can arrange your tactics on your own, and there's no time limit. Start now."

Gao Guang, Mike, and Francisco gathered together. Gao Guang whispered, "Live ammunition shooting is a bit dangerous..."

"I'll go in front, just like we used to," Mike eagerly shared his thoughts, while Francisco whispered, "Then let's use a triangular attack formation. Sir, please stay behind me."

"Alright, let's begin."

Adjusting their positions, Mike stood to the left and in front of Gao Guang, while Francisco stood to the right and in front of Gao Guang. As Thompson pressed the stopwatch and said "begin," the three of them rushed towards the activity room.

Mike ran fast and quickly left the other two behind. But when he realized that he was going too fast, he slowed down and waited for Gao Guang and Francisco.

Then the three of them rushed in together and started firing at the targets inside, clearing the enemies outside before searching room by room.

This was just a live ammunition shooting exercise without any opposition, so it wasn't particularly difficult. However, they could still observe some things.Three people took two and a half minutes to clear the targets in six rooms. After Thompson announced the end of the exercise, he immediately turned to Mike and said, "Pay attention to your position, pay attention to your speed. Before, there were only two of you, but now there are three. Understand?"

It wasn't criticism, Thompson was just reminding Mike to be more careful. For Mike, this basic formation was too simple, much simpler than the tactical changes in a football team. He only needed to pay a little attention and he could do it well.

This shouldn't be a problem, but Mike felt that things had become somewhat abnormal since Francesco came between him and Gao Guang, as if there was an extra burden.

Mike finally understood why he felt uncomfortable, because he felt that Francesco was encroaching on his position.
