Chapter 16 – Mrs. Lin retaliated, Zhang Yi directly fired back

Zhang Yi lounged on the sofa, yawning out of sheer boredom.

While others were enduring hunger and cold, his life was more comfortable than heaven itself.

His home boasted the perfect insulation system and a seemingly endless supply of fuel, ensuring his safe house remained at a cozy, constant temperature all year round.

All he had to do was ensure each day was spent in high spirits.

There wasn't much to watch on TV either.

Various live broadcasts had ceased due to the extreme cold.

After all, his favorite beautiful streamers couldn't possibly dance in tank tops in temperatures of minus sixty or seventy degrees, let alone over a hundred degrees.

If there were any, Zhang Yi could only give a thumbs up and exclaim, "What a tough cookie!"

He opened his personal storage space, where an array of gaming consoles and AAA titles awaited.

PS5s, Switches, and Xboxes, hundreds of them brand new and unopened.

And as for game cartridges, there were tens of thousands of sets.

Zhang Yi took out a brand-new PS5 and set it up on his massive 100-inch Sony TV, diving into his games.

He was playing the latest AAA action game, "Bayonetta 3."

Beside him lay "Elden Ring," "The Witcher 3," and "Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice," among others.

If he wanted to pass the time, these were excellent choices.

And if he found the games too short, there were massive time sinks like "Civilization" and "Cities: Skylines" to keep him thoroughly entertained.

Without the need to worry about work or social niceties, this life was even better than before the apocalypse!

Since he was at home, Zhang Yi was just in his pajamas, snacking and gaming to his heart's content.

After a while, his phone rang.

Casually picking it up, he saw it was that annoying Mrs. Lin from the Neighborhood Committee tagging him in the property owners' chat group.

"Zhang Yi, the roads outside are completely blocked by the snow. Come out with your tools and help clear it!"

Her words carried an authoritative tone.

Zhang Yi saw she was rallying everyone to clear the snow, but the response was meager.

He hadn't expected her to come directly to him.

Glancing outside at the heavy snow, the entire floor was nearly buried.

Three meters of snow was practically impossible to clear by hand.

And Zhang Yi knew the snow would continue for at least another three months.

Going out to clear it now would be futile; the snowfall was faster than any clearing efforts.

He immediately refused: "It's too cold out there; you'd freeze into an icicle in no time. We can talk about clearing snow once it stops."

Others echoed Zhang Yi's sentiment.

"Yeah, with temperatures below minus seventy degrees outside, you'd get frostbite in no time."

"We're not in the northeast; we don't have proper cold weather gear. How are we supposed to go out?"

Mrs. Lin was instantly infuriated.

"What kind of attitude is that? Clearing snow isn't for me, it's for everyone's benefit!"

"You're all young and strong men; in times of disaster, you should be eager to serve the people, not shirk your duties!"

She directed her ire at Zhang Yi, who had led the opposition.

"Zhang Yi, I command you in the name of the Neighborhood Committee to go out and clear the snow!"

"In this time of crisis, we must unite and follow the organization's orders!"

"Anyone who dares to oppose me is opposing the Neighborhood Committee's leadership! When the snow disaster is over, the organization will surely hold you accountable!"

Mrs. Lin once again invoked her position in the committee.

The property owners were angry but dared not speak out.

With the snow disaster just beginning and social order still intact, no one dared to defy the committee.

Despite the committee members' seemingly limited power, their small authority was closely tied to everyone's daily life, so people were reluctant to provoke them.

Everyone remained silent, not wanting to be the one to stick their neck out.

However, many hoped Zhang Yi would stand up and give Mrs. Lin a piece of his mind, speaking out on behalf of everyone.

Zhang Yi was well aware of these ostrich-like thoughts. A cold smile played on his lips as he looked down on them with disdain.

But to swallow his pride and stay silent? That was out of the question.

So he decided to confront Mrs. Lin head-on.

He scrolled through the chat history; Mrs. Lin had tagged a few people who were usually easy to talk to in the neighborhood.

The troublemakers and those with power and influence were conveniently ignored.

Zhang Yi taunted, "Mrs. Lin is right, since it's for everyone's benefit, the committee members should be the first to clear the snow."

"And if we're talking about being young and strong, there are so many people in our community, why did you only call on us few?"

"Do you think we're easy to bully? I don't see you tagging any of those socialites or second-generation wealthy."

"What, you clam up when it comes to them?"

The other property owners nodded in agreement with Zhang Yi's words.

"Zhang Yi is the voice of the internet for me!"

"Exactly, she's only targeting the Honest People. Why not go after Chen Zhenghao and Xu Hao?"

Everyone knew who Zhang Yi was referring to.

Living in the same community, they were all aware of the notable figures.

For instance, Chen Zhenghao from 601 on the sixth floor was a well-known local tough guy with a construction business and hundreds of men at his beck and call.

Then there was Xu Hao from 802 on the eighth floor, whose father was a famous developer in Tianhai City, with connections in officialdom.

Mrs. Lin hadn't mentioned either of them from start to finish.

Zhang Yi's words exposed Mrs. Lin's nature of bullying the weak and fearing the strong, leaving her with no face to save.

She hadn't mentioned those tough characters because she lacked the courage, and they wouldn't give her the time of day.

People like her always bullied the weak and feared the strong.

If Zhang Yi had always been this assertive, Mrs. Lin wouldn't have asked him to clear the snow.

Feeling she had lost face, she sent several long voice messages in a row in the group.

"Clearing snow is a public service, for the good of all. Some people are petty over trivial matters, lacking any spirit of contribution!"

"Such people are a scourge in our property owners' group!"

"If you don't want to do it, fine, there are others who will! Their awareness is much higher than yours."

"Also, I'm not giving special treatment to certain people. There's no need to tag everyone individually. I hope you understand and don't mislead yourselves!"

"If anyone else posts slanderous comments about me, I'll call the police!"

Mrs. Lin's explanations only seemed to make things worse.

Especially her last claim about calling the police, which made Zhang Yi burst into laughter.

Hearing Mrs. Lin's words, the more timid property owners were scared and went out with their tools to clear the snow.

But Zhang Yi was not the least bit intimidated by her.

Not to mention that the police wouldn't support her unreasonable behavior.

Besides, she couldn't still believe that society's machinery was functioning normally, could she?
