Chapter 23 – Water and power outage

Three days after the apocalypse began, the real drama unfolded.

Zhang Yi had anticipated what would happen, so he stayed up all night, waiting to witness the spectacle.

The incident was quite simple.

The electricity in Yuelu Residential Area suddenly cut out!

It can be hard to make great work when its stolen from "p𝑎wread.com".

Not long after, due to a chain reaction from the power outage, the water company was unable to supply water normally.

With the water supply system compromised, every household was left without water.

All of this was within Zhang Yi's expectations.

After all, at the onset of the apocalypse, no one could have predicted how long the extreme cold disaster would last.

The authorities were still trying their best to cope, attempting to resolve the snow disaster.

But as time passed, day by day, it became clear on just the third day that this was not a problem that could be solved by human efforts.

The freezing temperatures caused hydroelectric power plants to shut down one after another, and thermal power plants ceased operation due to the inability of staff to work.

Once cities across the country exhausted their stored electricity, power outages were inevitable.

At this point, probably only a few nuclear power plants were still operational.

But the electricity they generated was naturally reserved for official use.

No water, no power – ordinary people's lives plunged into darkness!

Zhang Yi, however, had already fired up two silent generators, powering up his home.

After doing so, he checked his phone and saw that the messages in various chat groups had piled up to 99+.

"Does your house have electricity?"

"We have no power! And the water's stopped too, what's going on?"

"Our place is out of water and power too! In this cold weather, the air conditioner is useless, and we can't even use heaters. How are we supposed to survive this?"

"Why isn't the government stepping in at a time like this? If this continues, people are going to freeze to death."

Zhang Yi silently shook his head.

At this point, the authorities were too overwhelmed to care for everyone.

Survival depended on oneself.

He also knew that the apocalypse, in its truest sense, was beginning today.

And after losing the modern society's electricity and food, humanity would fall into mass death.

Thinking of this, Zhang Yi glanced at his home with trepidation.

Seeing his house, warm as spring and secure as a fortress, and the endless supplies in his other-dimensional space, a sense of reassurance warmed his heart.

The property owners' chat group was filled with anxious complaints.

If it weren't for advanced technology ensuring that phone batteries didn't fail in the cold, they wouldn't even be able to use their phones.

But without electricity, phones would eventually become useless.

"When will this snow stop? We can't use the air conditioning, and it's over thirty degrees below zero inside."

"If this keeps up, we really will freeze to death!"

"The water's stopped too, are we expected to drink snow?"

"We're running low on food at home, and we can't go to the supermarket with the snow blocking the door. What are we supposed to do?"

People began to tag Mrs. Lin.

"Mrs. Lin, didn't you say it was going to be fine?"

"Yeah, I believed you and didn't go out to stock up. What do we do now?"

"When is someone coming to rescue us? Say something!"

Mrs. Lin, faced with the neighbors' questions, was also anxious and panicked.

Her fear was even greater than that of the neighbors.

The property owners were still in the dark about how they would be rescued.

But Mrs. Lin, through the Neighborhood Committee, had already received some information in advance.

"The whole world is experiencing a blizzard, said to be a once-in-a-hundred-thousand-years snow disaster. Perhaps we are facing another mass extinction, the apocalypse!"

"The government is trying its best, but with over a billion people in our country, it's impossible to take care of everyone."

"Several major cities in the country have already fallen!"

"From now on, if we want to survive, we can only rely on ourselves. We must stockpile supplies, especially food and heating resources."

"I've already started collecting supplies door-to-door in the name of the Neighborhood Committee."

"Isn't this harming people?"

"Harming people? If I don't do this, my family would freeze or starve to death in three days! I can't afford to care about that now!"

"I don't know how many will die from this snow disaster, but I can only take care of myself and my family first."

"Right, while we still have some influence, we should hurry and gather more supplies. At times like this, surviving is what matters most!"

Mrs. Lin stared at the messages in the Neighborhood Committee group, her body trembling violently.

Although the indoor temperature had plummeted to thirty degrees below zero, cold sweat still dripped from her forehead.

She lay in bed, covered with three thick layers of blankets, almost suffocating, but she dared not uncover them.

For her room was as cold as an ice cellar.

At that moment, her grandson Xiaohu asked from under the covers, "Grandma, why is it so cold outside? When will mom and dad come back?"

Mrs. Lin looked at her little grandson, her heart sinking.

She had just chatted with her son and daughter-in-law that day.

They were working out of town, now trapped in a rental, not much better off than them.

"I must protect the two of us, we have to survive!"

Mrs. Lin bit her lip hard, a fierce look flashing in her eyes.

"Xiaohu, it's okay, your parents will be back soon."

After comforting Xiaohu, Mrs. Lin picked up her phone and started speaking in the property owners' group.

"Everyone, the disaster is only temporary. The weather outside is extremely cold, so it's not surprising that we've lost water and power."

"Don't worry, repair crews are already on it."

"The government has issued a notice that in these extraordinary times, the Neighborhood Committee will manage the property owners of the residential area."

"Please cooperate with our work. If anyone fails to comply and causes serious consequences, we will ask the police to arrest and interrogate them after the fact!"

Mrs. Lin's words were heavy.

Her speech stirred strong dissatisfaction among the property owners.

They hadn't expected the Neighborhood Committee to intimidate them instead of explaining their own incompetence.

However, everyone was a bit scared and dared not speak out against it.

Zhang Yi, holding his phone, watched Mrs. Lin's messages with a leisurely air.

He raised an eyebrow and let out a scoff.

Of course, he knew Mrs. Lin was lying; in his past life, she had used such despicable means to deceive many people out of their supplies.

But he had no intention of exposing Mrs. Lin's tricks.

After all, whether the other neighbors lived or died, what did it have to do with him?

Zhang Yi turned on the TV and continued playing his game.

No water, no power?

No problem, his warehouse was stocked with a massive supply of spare batteries, generators, fuel, and solid alcohol.

As for water, he had stockpiled 500 tons of tap water, not to mention the tens of thousands of tons of mineral water and beverages in his warehouse.

And if necessary, he could also melt snow for water.

In short, whether it was fresh water or energy, he was not lacking at all.
