Chapter 40 – Bang!

Zhang Yi ignited the stink bomb and swiftly tossed it through the shooting hole above the door.

As the stink bomb hit the ground, it quickly released a thick plume of black smoke.

The pungent odor spread rapidly through the corridor.

Fang Yuqing and Lin Caining, upon smelling it, felt as if they had opened a can of feces sealed for ten years, and immediately began to vomit violently.

"Ugh... what is that, ugh..."

"Zhang Yi, ugh... you're so shameless!"

As the stench in the hallway intensified, the two women hurriedly fled.

Zhang Yi wasn't worried about the stench seeping back into his apartment; after closing the shooting hole, the room was in a semi-sealed state.

Though air could still circulate, the building was equipped with an air filtration system from the start, preventing any foul odors or harmful air from entering.

Seeing the two women's pathetic escape on the monitor, Zhang Yi couldn't help but burst into laughter.

But soon, he received complaints from the neighbors next door.

"Zhang Yi, what did you throw at your doorstep? It stinks! Could you please consider the neighbors' feelings?"

Zhang Yi's neighbors were a young couple who had moved in two years ago.

However, on regular days, he barely interacted with them, at most nodding in passing in the elevator.

In these apocalyptic times, he couldn't be bothered to maintain neighborly relations.

In the apocalypse, everything he did was for his own safety; he didn't care about others at all.

In fact, he was willing to ruthlessly eliminate anyone if it meant securing his own safety and comfort.

In the apocalypse, there was no room for mercy; any such sentiment had to be snuffed out immediately!

"If you disagree, come and fight me!"

After saying this, Zhang Yi blocked the neighbor.

It was the same old story; he couldn't be bothered to argue and waste his breath.

Soon, Zhang Yi noticed the neighbors bad-mouthing him in the community group.

Unfortunately for them, no one else cared about their petty issues.

Zhang Yi smirked, finding the lack of morality quite exhilarating.

...

That afternoon, Zhang Yi was abruptly woken from his sleep by a loud noise.

"Bang!"

A thunderous sound echoed through the hallway, quickly spreading throughout the entire building.

Zhang Yi's expression turned grave; the noise sounded like a gunshot.

Did someone in their community have a gun?

Unsure whether it was a gunshot or firecrackers, Zhang Yi hurried to the living room to check the surveillance through the TV.

The scene before him made his pupils constrict.

In front of the third-floor apartment, Chen Zhenghao, with a broken leg, was holding a black gun.

The cold, dark gleam of the gun was enough to send shivers down one's spine.

The door of that apartment was open, and from the angle of the camera, one could vaguely see two human legs.

Chen Zhenghao's henchmen were walking out with food, candles, and other items, laughing merrily.

Clearly, the third-floor residents were dead or, if not, wouldn't last long after being shot and losing all their supplies.

It was 10 a.m., a time when residents usually went out together to dig snow for melting into drinking water.

Together, they could temporarily raise the temperature in the hallway to prevent it from getting too cold.

Since no one could survive without water, this activity was a daily routine.

Chen Zhenghao had seized this opportunity to start killing and looting.

"Ding-dong!"

Zhang Yi's phone rang.

He glanced at it and saw a message from the community group.

Chen Zhenghao had sent a voice message.

"Now that the heavy snow has sealed the city, we can't rely on anyone but ourselves."

"I, Chen Zhenghao, will take on the responsibility of being the building manager for Building 25. From now on, I call the shots here!"

"Obey me, and I'll let you live well. Anyone who dares to step out of line, heh heh!"

Following that, Chen Zhenghao sent two pictures.

One showed the gun in his hand, and the other depicted the third-floor resident lying in a pool of blood.

The usually chatty group fell silent at the sight of this brutal scene.

Most residents were undoubtedly filled with fear.

In peacetime, when had they ever witnessed such a sight?

They couldn't even imagine it.

But now, the bloody reality was right before them.

In this building, sealed off by a blizzard, other people were hell!

No one dared to speak out against Chen Zhenghao; everyone was afraid of death.

Zhang Yi lay on the couch and couldn't help but remark, "Chen Zhenghao is clever indeed! No wonder he's thrived in society."

Chen Zhenghao used both carrot and stick, not just threatening the residents.

He only had one gun, and no one knew how many bullets he had.

But Zhang Yi knew there couldn't be many, as firearms were strictly controlled in the country.

He had spent a lot of money to buy just 100 bullets.

Moreover, Chen Zhenghao only had five or six henchmen.

With over fifty households and more than a hundred people in the building, if everyone were pushed to the brink, Chen Zhenghao, a cripple, wouldn't stand a chance.

Therefore, a mix of incentives and threats was the best way to keep the residents in line.

Human nature has always feared death.

Even though they all knew that Chen Zhenghao could kill the third-floor resident today and possibly them tomorrow, they still harbored a sliver of hope.

For instance, those living on higher floors thought that since Chen Zhenghao started with the third floor, it would be at least half a month before it was their turn, so they didn't need to fight back, assuming someone else would resist first.

And so on.

Those on the fourth floor felt that Chen Zhenghao might not kill in order and that resisting would guarantee their death, so it was better to stay put at home.

Maybe someone else would die first.

Zhang Yi shrugged; none of this concerned him.

Others might not dare to resist Chen Zhenghao, but he was not afraid.

If Chen Zhenghao dared to show up at his doorstep, his fate would be in Zhang Yi's hands.

As for whether the other neighbors lived or died, it had nothing to do with Zhang Yi.

They chose to bury their heads in the sand and not resist.

Zhang Yi had no interest in playing the saint, sacrificing himself to save others.

Just then, his phone began to ring with a series of urgent "ding-dong" sounds.

Picking up the phone, Zhang Yi saw hundreds of new messages!

He had been added to a new group.

Out of curiosity, he checked it out.

It turned out that the building's property owners had created a new group, excluding Chen Zhenghao and his crew.

The threat of death brought by Chen Zhenghao had prompted some to seek solidarity.

Zhang Yi remained silent, confident in his own safety.

He was curious to see what this group of people would do.
