Chapter 43 – She is anxious

After Chen Zhenghao killed the resident of apartment 301, the atmosphere in the entire building became extremely tense.

The once bustling crowd had now fallen silent, with no one daring to speak.

Chen Zhenghao seemed to have realized that everyone had secretly formed a new property owners' chat group behind his back.

But such things were impossible to prohibit.

All he could do was threaten and cajole within the chat group.

"Now with the situation so dire, we're all just trying to survive, no one wants to resort to killing."

"If that guy from 301 hadn't attacked my men first, I wouldn't have accidentally killed him. After all, I'm not a demon!"

"I hope we can all get along harmoniously in the future and lend us some food when we need it."

"As long as you cooperate, I assure you we can all live in peace."

With these words, some people actually let down their guard.

There were even those who thought that perhaps, as Chen Zhenghao said, the death of the property owner from 301 was because he struck first.

This is what Stockholm Syndrome refers to.

In the despair of death, as long as the aggressor shows them a bit of kindness, they would be grateful.

Zhang Yi remained an observer, watching coldly, neither commenting nor participating.

But in his heart, he grew more cautious of Chen Zhenghao.

Although Zhang Yi's home was well-defended, with just a few men and a broken gun, Chen Zhenghao had no chance of breaking in.

However, in the apocalypse, it's always right to be extra cautious.

"If he really provokes me, I'll find an opportunity to kill him!"

Zhang Yi said indifferently.

...

This brief calm was shattered the next day.

Although every household was too afraid of Chen Zhenghao to venture outside, if they didn't go downstairs to chip ice for water, they wouldn't survive.

So, some people quietly opened their doors, planning to sneak down and dig for snow unnoticed.

But they were caught red-handed by the lookouts Chen Zhenghao had sent.

The supplies they had looted the first day had been devoured by the starving henchmen.

Now, with bloodshot eyes, they viewed all the residents as their prey.

Whoever they caught, they would not be courteous, and would rob them clean!

In the new chat group, there were frantic cries for help.

Zhang Yi opened the chat and couldn't help but laugh.

The one crying for help was none other than Liu Tiantian, who lived on the seventh floor.

Chen Zhenghao lived just below her on the sixth floor.

This morning, she had hoped to sneak down to dig for snow and water under the cover of darkness, but was caught in the act.

Living alone, she was an easy target and had already caught the eye of Chen Zhenghao and his men.

Coupled with being cooped up for nearly half a month, Chen Zhenghao and his henchmen were feeling pent up and looking to vent on a woman.

Liu Tiantian wasn't particularly beautiful, but she was young and had an acceptable figure.

Given the limited options, no one was picky.

So the henchmen, armed with wrenches and iron rods, rushed up with gleeful smiles.

Liu Tiantian quickly shut her door and, in her despair, turned to her neighbors for help.

"Wuwuwu, someone please save me! They're smashing my door, please, I'll be killed!"

"@Uncle You, Uncle You, please save me! You're a veteran, they surely can't beat you."

"These people can't be trusted, they're too brutal, we need to stand together!"

"If something happens to me, you'll be next!"

Liu Tiantian's voice was filled with tears as she sent one urgent voice message after another in the chat.

However, just yesterday, she had been arrogantly berating a group of male property owners in the chat, not showing this side of herself.

Uncle You replied, "Girl, it's all so sudden, I can't take on so many of them by myself!"

Although Uncle You was kind-hearted, he wasn't about to throw his life away for nothing.

Chen Zhenghao had five or six men and guns; even as a former soldier, Uncle You couldn't stand against them.

If everyone had come to an agreement yesterday and formed a defense squad, there might have been a chance to scare them off.

Seeing Uncle You's response, Liu Tiantian felt a chill in her heart.

Crying, she said, "You can't do this! Can't you protect a weak woman like me? What kind of men are you!"

"Wuwuwu, if I die, I won't let you off even as a ghost!"

Initially, there was some sympathy for her, but when they realized she was shamelessly trying to morally blackmail everyone, their sympathy turned to anger.

Especially since Liu Tiantian had insulted all the men in the building yesterday, they now harbored both new grudges and old.

"Ah yes, we're all useless. You're so capable, Fairy, you surely don't need our help!"

"Haha, Fairy, you can fight, right? Beat those guys to death!"

"Weren't you shouting so loudly yesterday? I thought you were so capable, but now you're still begging us losers for help."

"You might as well die; your death would be a blessing to thousands of families!"

The chat was filled with gleeful laughter.

Everyone was schadenfreude about Liu Tiantian's plight, as her misfortune meant their short-term safety.

Seeing these cold taunts, Liu Tiantian fell into complete despair.

She then turned to the female property owners for help.

But their responses were uniform.

"We're all sisters, and in this situation, there's not much we can do."

"Sister, hang in there! I support you spiritually."

"You must hold on, or if they break in, they might do that to you!"

"Yeah, there are so many of them, they'll ruin you."

Some offered perfunctory comfort, while others took a perverse pleasure in scaring Liu Tiantian.

After all, human joys and sorrows do not resonate with each other; prolonged confinement and the threat of death had already twisted many people's hearts.

More and more people joined the chat, but the topic had taken a dark turn.

"Sister, even if you die, take someone with you, that would be doing a public service!"

"Right, right, your home's been robbed, you probably won't survive anyway. Might as well take someone down with you."

Liu Tiantian trembled with anger, and just as she was about to say something else, her door was kicked open with a "bang!"

In Zhang Yi's home, he watched on the monitor as Liu Tiantian let out a scream and was then dragged out by her legs by the henchmen.

"It's so cold outside, and yet they don't forget to exercise, their energy is really too strong!"

Zhang Yi made such a remark.

But it made sense; in the current situation, no one knew when they might die.

And when facing death, the first thing living beings think of is to pass on their genetic material.

Zhang Yi took a bite of a chocolate bar and said to the monitor, "At this temperature, any bit of skin exposed is life-threatening!"
