Chapter 30 – Spirit possession

As Sunny Xu's fingers touched the tooth, his body trembled slightly, as if a strange electric current had passed through his head and quickly spread throughout his body. His hands couldn't stop trembling, as if enduring the torment of scorching heat or extreme cold.

Following that, a large number of blurry images quickly flashed through his mind, flooding his brain with unfamiliar information.

Although the images were not clear, Sunny instinctively realized that they were unfamiliar information that did not belong to his own mind, absorbed from the outside world through some medium at this moment.

The influx of this information did not make Sunny feel a headache or a swollen head. The human brain is not so fragile, or rather, its complexity and delicacy far exceed human imagination. It is the greatest achievement jointly created by nature and civilization. He just felt like his body was "floating" in an instant.

He focused his gaze and found that his body was still in place, while his soul... or consciousness was floating.

The tooth was the medium, he thought.

Sunny regained his composure and focused his attention on the unfamiliar images.

Just as fish are born to swim and fledglings learn how to flap their wings in the nest, instinct, an instinct that he didn't know where it came from, made Sunny know what to do without any guidance.

He felt like he had jumped from a great height into the water, and his "consciousness" successfully collided with the chaotic images--

Suddenly, Sunny felt a headache, so painful that he could hardly speak.

His vision was dim and blurry, as if he was in an old movie. Everything around him was black and white.

He realized that the pain had an obvious source, so he slowly reached out and touched the back of his head.

There was obviously a wet lump, and when he pressed it lightly, it hurt so much that he gritted his teeth.

"Who the hell dares to attack me?!"

He heard a strange voice coming from his own mouth.

This feeling was really strange. Sunny instinctively wanted to close his mouth, but he could only watch his lips open and close.

He staggered to his feet, grimacing in pain, and looked around. He saw Yan Mingjun still unconscious on the ground, and Wang Nana weakly gasping for breath.

"Damn it, the duck that was about to reach my mouth flew away! What a bunch of useless people."

After cursing, he grabbed the nearby pillar for support.

Because the headache was too intense just now, it masked the discomfort in other parts of his body. Now he quickly realized that it wasn't just the back of his head that was injured, and soon realized who was responsible for it.

"Damn it, that bastard!"

He was instantly furious, and angrily smashed the door frame.

...

After hearing that curse, Sunny suddenly came to his senses.

He took a deep breath.

So that's it... what I just saw, was it Shi Hui's past experience?

Perhaps it was because of the emotions stirring deep in his heart, or perhaps because it was his first attempt and he wasn't skilled enough, he almost broke free from the state he was in just now.

But the images in the room seemed to have weight of their own, causing him to sink into the deep water again--

...

He hesitated for a moment, but decided not to check his condition. In any case, he was probably just swollen from being kicked, but shouldn't be seriously injured... because Wang Nana had gotten up by now.

She squatted beside the unconscious Yan Mingjun and shook his shoulder.

The long-haired delinquent didn't wake up. This time, Wang Nana simply lay down next to her boyfriend and shouted:

"Wake up!"

Yan Mingjun was startled, and quickly sat up after opening his eyes.

Unlike Shi Hui, the first thing he did after waking up was to twist his face in pain and cover his lower body, unreservedly undoing his belt to check his vital area.

He couldn't bear to look and turned his head, sighing as he held his head.

"I've suffered quite a bit this time..."

"Yeah, we must find a way to get revenge."

Wang Nana said. Her voice sounded like it was squeezed out of her throat, and her bruised face was filled with coldness.

Yan Mingjun looked at her, then at Shi Hui, with a puzzled expression.

Just then, there was a noise from upstairs.

The three of them were stunned and looked towards the stairs behind them.

"Is someone still here?"

"They actually stayed behind, they're really bold." He clenched his fist and limped to the bottom of the stairs. "Watch me teach them a lesson..."

Another creaking sound, the sound of decaying wooden stairs being stepped on.

He stopped.

Somehow, he suddenly felt a chill in his heart, and his skin broke out in goosebumps.

A cold breeze swept over his head, making him shiver uncontrollably, but his heart was pounding, unable to control or stop. In a short while, he was covered in cold sweat.

He turned his head and found that his companions were frozen in place, just like him, motionless. Their pupils were dilated, filled with fear and unease.

The footsteps above were neither fast nor slow, maintaining a certain rhythm. But the sound was already very close to them, and it would soon reach the top of the stairs. It was very likely that it had started going downstairs while they were unconscious. He gritted his teeth. Although he knew something was wrong, he was used to bullying students on weekdays and even disregarded teachers. Now that his anger had risen, he decided to charge up the stairs, regardless of whether it was a person or a ghost, to see what was going on!

But just as he was about to take a step forward, the person upstairs had already come down.

The first thing that caught his eye was a pair of cloth shoes, the kind that was usually only seen on old people these days.

Above that was a solemn Zhongshan suit. The person stood at the stairwell, facing the wall without turning around, so they could only see a straight back and a head full of white hair.

"Is it an old man?"

"Didn't they say there was no one in this room..."

He heard his companion's murmurs behind him, but he couldn't say a word himself.

He was the closest to the old man, and the chilling feeling almost permeated every corner of his body, even penetrating into his bones. He suspected that if he exhaled now, he might even spit out some ice crumbs.

The courage he had mustered up disappeared, and his legs trembled uncontrollably. Even standing steady by leaning against the pillar became difficult.

The only thing he felt fortunate about was that the old man in the Zhongshan suit didn't turn his head to look at him. He stood alone in the darkest corner of the stairs, silently facing the wall, like a statue...

"Hey, why don't you turn around? Hey, old man, can you hear me? I'm talking to you!"

Just then, a loud and arrogant voice came from behind him.

Startled, he almost jumped up and turned around to glare fiercely at Yan Mingjun. Anger surged within him, and he wanted nothing more than to rush up and beat this idiot.

Is this guy crazy?! Doesn't he understand what it means to respect the elderly and love the young!

Wang Nana, who was standing beside him, also looked at her current boyfriend with a strange expression. How could he dare to speak so boldly in this situation? She didn't know whether to say he was carefree or...

"Rustle, rustle."

At the same time, all three of them heard a faint sound.

This sound should have been very light, as light as a mouse running on the floor. But when it was magnified hundreds and thousands of times, the entire house seemed to be floating on a huge wave, shaking and about to collapse.

Shi Hui instinctively turned his head back and met the slowly turning face of the old man.

A wrinkled and aged face, a face... without eyes.

In the place where there should have been eyeballs, there were only two pitch-black holes. Yet he still felt the oppressive feeling of being "stared at" by something, making it difficult for him to even breathe.

His companions behind him let out a scream of horror.

He began to feel dizzy, and his vision became blurry.

He saw something crawling out of the two black holes on the old man's face... rustle, rustle. Was it a mouse? No, it wasn't. It was some kind of more winding, smoother, and thinner creature...

A snake?

No, he thought dizzily, snakes wouldn't have so many wriggling legs.

...Right, it's a bug.

It was the shadow of some kind of long worm.

Like a centipede, like an earthworm, like a maggot, like a leech.

They crawled out of the deep eye sockets of the old man, down the clothes and stairs, slowly and coldly crawling on the floor, leaving behind a wet trace.

One of them crawled onto his shoes, up his pants, slowly climbing up, over his belt, over his abdomen, over his collar, until the moist sensation extended to his mouth...

He wanted to struggle, but he couldn't move at all. His whole body felt like it was submerged in cement, and he could only watch as the creature with suction cup-like legs opened his mouth little by little.

"Gurgle."

His Adam's apple moved for a moment, as if he had just swallowed some saliva.

And the next second, he realized that he had swallowed that thing.

Even though it had burrowed into his body, he could still vividly feel its presence, a bit painful but not intensely so, as if a pair of hands were grabbing his internal organs and kneading them...

"Ugh... Ugh!"

His stomach churned, and as expected, he vomited with a loud thud.

His limbs twitched uncontrollably, like a puppet being manipulated by someone behind the scenes. He heard himself slowly falling to the ground, the sound of hitting the floor.

But he didn't feel any pain at all.

He saw his body convulsing like it didn't belong to him, springing up and down.

He fell into his own vomit and struggled to lift his head.

From this angle, he could see the entrance of the room.

He saw Wang Nana crying and kneeling on the ground, pounding on the door with all her strength. Yan Mingjun was leaning against the window, desperately shouting for help, tears and snot covering his face.

But no one came.

Both the door and the window were firmly nailed shut, isolating the inside from the outside, not allowing any sound to escape.

He saw that these two people were also entangled by the bugs crawling from behind them. They wanted to escape, to dodge, but in the end, they fell down like wooden stakes, watching helplessly as the bugs entered their bodies.

The same fate as his.

Seeing this scene, a grim smile appeared on his stiff face."Thinking of leaving me behind and running away? That's too easy... Good, at least I'm not alone, I have these two idiots with me... They, they will all suffer the same fate as me..."

As he was thinking, he suddenly saw a pair of feet in cloth shoes walking past his face.

He lifted his head, and once again saw those pitch-black "eyes".

The ghost of the old man was looking down at him, peering into his body, into his deepest part; their four eyes met, as if the other party was looking through him, staring at something that did not exist in this time period, something that did not exist in the world—

*

Sunny Xu jolted, breaking away from the state of being one with the picture.

"Xu? Sunny Xu? Are you okay?"

The girl's worried voice seemed to come from beyond the heavens.

Sunny Xu shivered, his back clothes already soaked with cold sweat. He took several deep breaths before he managed to reply:

"I'm... I'm fine..."
