Chapter 21 – Hinterland

"Of course... hehe, I know exactly what I'm saying." Dragon of Human took a step forward and said to everyone, "Countless people have walked out of this door, and I have said these words to every single one of them."

"Countless..."

Everyone was stunned for a moment, and Officer Li angrily asked, "What exactly are you? How many people have you captured?"

"Captured?" Dragon of Human tilted his head and revealed a pair of dirty eyes from the hollow of his mask. He stared coldly at Officer Li and laughed, "Are you mistaken? Did we really 'capture' you?"

"Isn't it?!" Officer Li gritted his teeth and said, "Are you saying we came here on our own?!"

Lin Qin sighed and said to Qi Xia and Officer Li, "You both know they are crazy, so don't try to argue with them. Let's get out of here quickly."

Her words made everyone sober up a bit. These people wearing animal masks were already abnormal, and the person in front of them, who had sewn together various animal heads, was even crazier.

If they followed the madman's line of thinking, they would go mad themselves in no time.

Everyone bypassed Dragon of Human and walked towards the exit behind him.

"Remember, without three thousand six hundred 'paths,' no one can leave." Dragon of Human reminded them in a low voice.

Qi Xia turned his head inexplicably and asked him, "How do we obtain these 'paths'?"

"I don't know, why do you care?" Qiao Jiajin pushed Qi Xia impatiently. "Do you really want to find those golden beads?"

"No matter what, I must get out of here." Qi Xia's eyes showed determination. "Someone is waiting for me."

Dragon of Human nodded slightly and said, "It is the 'game' that you have experienced. Different games can obtain different 'paths.'"

Qi Xia's expression became grim. He lowered his head and examined the golden beads in his hand. "Are you saying... we have to actively participate in the game to obtain the 'paths'?"

"Hehe, that's right, take them, take them." Dragon of Human waved his dirty hand continuously. "We must leave this place."

Qi Xia looked at the beads in his hand, lost in thought.

The others didn't know how to persuade him, so they could only walk out of the door one after another.

A breeze blew, carrying a heavy and indescribable scent.

The people present slowly opened their eyes, but there was no joy as if they had been reborn.

Because before them was a dead city that resembled ruins.

Above the dark red sky hung a sun the color of soil. The surface of the sun had black lines, spreading inward.

Under this bizarre sky, a dilapidated city came into view.

It seemed to be a prosperous area of a small city, but it looked like it had been bombed once and then burned to ashes.

The fire had burned for days and nights without being extinguished, eventually becoming what it was now.

Most of the houses were damaged, with cracked walls. Countless dark red plants covered the walls.

Officer Li swallowed and asked, "Hey, Dragon of Human, what kind of haunted place did you bring us to..."

He turned his head, but his words came to a halt as he slowly opened his mouth wide.

The others turned their heads as well, following the sound of his voice.

There were no buildings behind them, only an empty square.

The nine of them were standing alone in the center of the square, as if they had descended from the sky.

"How did we end up here?"

"What about the door we came out of?! And Dragon of Human?!"

Unfortunately, there was no one here to answer their questions.

In the center of the square, there was a particularly conspicuous large electronic screen. It seemed to have been used for many years, with even the edges rusting.

On the screen, there was a sentence that puzzled everyone:

"I heard the echo of 'disaster.'"

"Disaster? What ghostly thing is this?" Qiao Jiajin read the sentence twice but still didn't understand.

Qi Xia noticed a large and mottled bronze bell standing above the electronic screen.

This ancient object looked extremely discordant when placed next to the electronic screen.

After a while, the writer Han Yimo slowly raised his head and whispered, "So we really died... this is the underworld, right?"

Before seeing this scene, he still had a glimmer of hope.

Maybe they hadn't died, but were brought here by someone before dying.

But how could this abnormal world be explained?

"I don't know if we're dead or not, but I do know that if I don't treat your wound soon, you will really die." Dr. Zhao forced himself to stay alert and supported Han Yimo's arm.

This statement brought everyone back to reality from their daze.

Regardless, they seemed to be "alive" now, so since they seemed to be alive, they couldn't give up."There seems to be a convenience store over there." Lin Qin pointed to the distance, "Although it looks severely damaged, I wonder if there will be needles, thread, and gauze inside?"

Without a word, Qiao Jiajin supported Han Yimo's other arm and gave a bitter smile, saying:

"Let's check it out. It would be even better if there's some food."

Everyone slowly moved forward.

The scenery here was constantly exuding a strange atmosphere, making everyone feel uneasy.

The convenience store was in the middle of a road, the glass at the entrance was completely shattered, and half of the sign had collapsed.

Just as everyone was about to reach the entrance, they slowly stopped.

Across from the convenience store was a restaurant, and a figure was standing at the entrance.

He was wearing a bull mask, dressed in a black suit, hands behind his back, like a statue.

Everyone couldn't help but feel a bit nervous.

These people wearing animal masks were all madmen.

Now that he was standing here, was he going to issue another "test"?

After waiting cautiously for a while, they found that the bull-headed man didn't move at all. He didn't speak, and he didn't even glance at them.

Finally, everyone plucked up the courage to move a few steps forward and arrived at the entrance of the convenience store.

"Is it a dummy?" Tian Tian asked cautiously.

Qi Xia took a closer look at the bull-headed man. The eyes under his mask were still slightly moving, so he should not be a dummy. It seemed like he was guarding the restaurant behind him.

"Who cares who he is, let's just pretend he doesn't exist." Officer Li turned around and opened the dilapidated door of the convenience store.

As soon as the door opened, a nauseating smell hit them.

The smell of the city itself was already "heavy", but the smell of the convenience store was even worse.

The smell of blood, stench, and burnt mixed with a hint of heat, echoed in the room.

These smells seemed very fresh, as if they had just been emitted.

"Ugh..."

Zhang Chenze, the lawyer, couldn't stand it and bent over to retch.

Tian Tian looked at her worriedly and asked, "Are you okay, lawyer?"

"I'm fine..." Zhang Chenze wiped her mouth and looked at Tian Tian, "You seem to be unaffected..."

Tian Tian's expression was a bit unnatural, she could only give a bitter smile and said, "It might have something to do with my profession... I've smelled worse things."

"Don't... don't say anymore..." Zhang Chenze almost retched again.

Qi Xia covered his nose and mouth and entered the room. Most of the shelves here had fallen to the ground, the floor was pitch black and sticky, and he didn't know what it was.
