Vol.2 - Chapter 13 – Hope is expensive, how much you can get depends on your sincerity

The next morning, Mason waited at the pier for the return of Annie's Queen of Revenge.

The Kite Man, who had flown a few circles in the air, glided down gracefully with his kite, landing beside Mason like a grey hawk.

He pressed the golden button on his chest, and the large kite on his back was mechanically retracted into his flight backpack. As Charles approached, some parts of his specially made aviation alloy battle suit made a slight clanging sound.

This suit was the most special of all.

Its outer layer was made of metal, and the lining was made of Hagrid's mole skin coat, which ensured complete bulletproof protection while also enhancing comfort, ensuring that the Kite Man wouldn't feel cold even at thousands of meters high in the sky.

Because it was made of metal, it looked very heavy and oppressive with its sharp edges and corners, but the special alloy ensured defense while making it not as heavy as it looked.

"Boss, this new suit is really great!"

Charles whistled and opened his V-shaped mask, saying to Mason:

"It's worthy of being Batman's exclusive blueprint, much better than the suit I made in my small workshop. Also, Boss, this is the conversation record between Selina and Constantine in the past four days. I secretly wrote it down."

Charles handed over a small black notebook.

But Mason didn't take it, instead frowning and saying:

"I didn't ask you to do this, Charles. It's not good to do this."

"But John obviously has his own ideas."

The Kite Man said seriously:

"He's not Catwoman. Selina has been supporting you, maybe because she really sees you as a little brother since you saved her and Batman. Selina herself also enjoys this journey in another world. On the way to Prince Harbor, Selina and I had a great time playing together, and we even caught a zombie octopus ourselves... but Constantine, he's been complaining. It's like criticizing and hating everything he sees is his life habit. If this was in the Joker's gang..."

"That's the problem, K Squad is not the Joker's gang."

Mason shook his head and said:

"I trust my team, just like I trust you. Charles, you don't need to do these things anymore. Speaking of which, did Scum Con cause any trouble?"

The Kite Man replied with a sneer:

"He didn't do anything inappropriate in the four days you were away. Apart from studying the gold coin and Blackbeard's voodoo book, he has been hanging out in the tavern on Turtle Island, seducing several destitute noblewomen in just four days, ranging from 17 to 37 years old. He was almost beaten to death by a drunken and jealous husband. If it weren't for Catwoman and I returning from our voyage that night, his journey in another world would have ended because of his infidelity. But, Boss, I think John is not as resistant to our exploration as he appears to be. I think his resistance to K Squad is more because of the curse on us and his suspicion of the Star Society."

"You summarized it well, I understand."Mason nodded.

The two chatted for a few more minutes on the pier. Queen Anne's Revenge was getting closer and closer, and a shabby black ship was following behind the legendary pirate ship that gave people great oppression.

"That's the Black Pearl...Barbossa got him!"

A voice came from behind Mason. Angelina, the female pirate who had been "trained" by Selina for a few days, appeared on the pier.

Unlike her previous pirate outfit, she was wearing a long dress this time, with her hair loose on her shoulders, and a charming smile on her South American-style cheeks, which was very similar to Catwoman.

The original wild feeling suddenly weakened a lot.

Instead, there was a kind of elegance, like a girl who didn't understand the world.

"What did Selina teach you?"

Mason looked up and down at the greatly changed female pirate and said, "What did you learn from her?"

"Ms. Selina has profound wisdom of life. She made me understand that beauty is also a weapon for women, and it is a more powerful weapon than warships and artillery."

The female pirate flicked her hair.

Although the movement was still a bit unfamiliar, there was indeed a hint of the "queen of the sea" in it.

"If possible, I would very much like to follow Ms. Selina for a long time, of course, this is after I have dealt with some personal grudges."

She looked at Mason and said obediently, "Catwoman told me about the K team. Captain, in the face of the end of the world in my hometown, I really hope to have a way out."

"But not everyone can join the K team, madam."

Mason looked at her and threw Jack Sparrow's voodoo doll to her, saying, "Persuade Jack to willingly leave with us, and you will complete your 'job assessment'. You can have a new life in another relatively safe world."

"What do you need Jack to do for you?"

Angelina asked in surprise and a little worried, holding the voodoo doll in her hand.

Mason didn't hide it and said directly, "The K team needs a professional intelligence officer, and Jack's extraordinary communication skills, his killing power against women, and his unique but always useful commanding ability are what we urgently need."

"He won't give up his crew!"

The female pirate said, "Although that guy always claims to be a ruthless pirate, there is no one gentler than him on this sea. Can the K team accept so many people?"

"Although I call my organization a 'team', what I imagine may be a very comprehensive legion, and someone needs to do anything. And I like professionals to do professional things."

The captain rubbed his chin and said, "I am not stingy in providing a job and a hope of escaping the end of the world for those who have a unique skill."

"Yes, my bar needs a lot of professional security personnel to continue operating for a long time in the 'simple and honest' Gotham City. The bloodthirsty pirates sound very suitable."

Kite Man also stood with his hands on his hips, posing as a capitalist, saying, "I can't keep hiring people from the lackeys union all the time. The intermediary fee is too expensive.""With your promise, I can give it a try."

The female pirate put her hand on Mason's shoulder and made a loyalty gesture of the high seas. She said, "But I have a request... I hope Jack Sparrow can become my 'personal item'. Perhaps your charming but powerful Mr. Wizard can help me with that. I can already tell that Mr. Constantine is a wizard much more powerful than my father."

"I don't care, you go find Scum-Kon yourself," Mason said, shrugging.

"But remember, we call him 'Scum-Kon' for a reason. Don't get yourself involved, miss. That's my advice to you."

After another ten minutes, Barbosa's ship finally dropped anchor. A small boat was sent to pick up Mason and his two companions, and they were brought to the same luxurious captain's cabin as last time, with the greasy but imposing pirate captain Barbosa.

This time, however, there was no extravagant music or lavish food in the captain's cabin. Instead, there was a man tied up with rope who was still babbling non-stop, and a young girl in a blue dress who was beautiful, young, and had a bookish air about her.

She looked about fifteen or sixteen years old and was standing nervously next to Barbosa.

"Mason, I'm glad to see you've come as promised," Barbosa said, looking tired after several days of travel. He was an old man, after all, and didn't bother with pleasantries. Instead, he pointed directly at the bound man and said, "You wanted Jack Sparrow and the Black Pearl. I've brought them to you. What about what I wanted?"

"Hey, buddy, I don't know what Barbosa promised you, but let me give you some advice: don't do business with this old fox!" Jack Sparrow shouted at Mason, looking disheveled. "I've known him for over twenty years, but I only found out two days ago that this dog has a daughter as beautiful as a flower! If I had known that, how could I have helped this little cutie?"

"Jack! Shut up!" Angelina Titch, who was following behind Mason, whispered, and Jack's gaze fell on the gentle and graceful girl.

He blinked and said, "Uh, do we know each other, miss? Are you Mary from Jamaica or Judy from San Pedro?"

"Heh," the female pirate sneered, taking out the voodoo doll that made Jack Sparrow stare in amazement. He immediately jumped up and cursed, "Angelina! I knew it! You and your crazy old man are both terrible people! I left you on a deserted island and didn't even wait for God to take you away?"

"Shut him up!" Barbosa was getting annoyed. Two pirates came forward with ropes and tied Jack Sparrow's mouth shut, but even with his mouth shut, he still made faces and gestures. His presence was really so strong that it was unimaginable. It seemed that he had a natural charisma that could attract attention.

"Meow~"Mason took out a shrunken voodoo birdcage from his multifunctional belt, and everyone in the captain's room pulled out their weapons when they saw what was inside the cage.

Barbossa roared, "Are you planning to kill me with that damn flesh-eating monster? Mason, you should have acted last time! Thanks to your wizard friend's 'performance,' I have also found my own wizard! You won't hurt me on my ship!"

"Calm down, Barbossa. Miss McGee doesn't need to take action for me to want your life."

Mason glanced at the pirate captain and took out a blue crystal test tube and a specialized syringe from his belt. He held up the test tube containing the zombie vaccine and said to everyone, "This is the medicine I brought. I call it 'Hope.' One injection will keep you safe from the Black Death and zombies for two months. But I know you savage and realistic people only believe what you see, so I need a 'brave warrior' to volunteer to try it."

In a quiet captain's room, the female pirate Angelina stared at the blue potion in Mason's hand. Its unique technology made it stand out from the surrounding decorations. She didn't hesitate for long.

"I'll do it!"

She looked at Jack Sparrow, who was also silent, and took the initiative to step forward, rolling up her sleeve to reveal a tattooed arm.

"You're already Mason's person, Blackbeard's daughter. I trust you!"

Barbossa also stared at the powerful-looking potion in Mason's hand with a mixture of seven parts suspicion and three parts desire. He refused Angelina's attempt to let his subordinates try it out.

But before the old pirate could speak, the young girl in the blue dress next to him stepped forward.

She was clearly scared, but still mustered up the courage to say, "I'll do it! My teacher who taught me astronomy and natural history told me that there is no cure for the Black Death in this world. She said it's not a common disease but something even more terrible. As you can see, sir, I am a scholar. Although ignorant people call me a 'witch,' I truly believe in the power of science. If the medicine in your hand can save this world, then I am willing to be a test subject!"

"Serena! Come back!"

When he saw his daughter, whom he had just found from that bastard Jack, volunteer to be a test subject, Barbossa, who had been mighty his whole life, couldn't sit still.

His past madness, cunning, and cruelty were all because he had no attachments, but now that he suddenly had a daughter, he seemed to have turned into a normal dad.

He jumped up from his captain's chair with his wooden leg and pulled his daughter back.

But there was obviously a terrible rift between father and daughter.

Serena Smith pushed Barbossa away and stared at him with disgust, as if she were looking at something dirty.

"We have the best test subject, Mason!"

The old pirate pretended not to see his daughter's disgusted gaze. He sneered and protected his daughter, who hated him, behind him, pointing at the bound Jack Sparrow."I spared his life for this moment, didn't I? Don't waste any more time, hurry up! Let me see your promise, wizard. I hope you understand the price of deceiving a great pirate."

"You'll be apologizing to me for your shameless slander in a moment, Barbossa."

Mason glanced at the old pirate and gestured to the Kite Man beside him, who was wearing a full set of armor and a black V-shaped mask, looking imposing.

Charles immediately stepped forward and dragged the struggling Captain Jack over.

Under everyone's gaze, Mason pressed down on Captain Jack's arm and gave him an injection.

After observing for a few minutes to confirm that there were no allergic reactions, Mason brought Miss McGee in the birdcage close to the wildly struggling and whining Jack.

The sharp black cat claws, accompanied by a shrill scream, quickly slashed a bloody mark on Jack's arm.

At that moment, even old pirate Barbossa made a cross on his chest.

It seemed like he was mourning for his "old friend's" fate.

Mason pulled out Hagrid's hunting knife and cut the ropes on Captain Jack's body. As soon as he was free, he began to scream and wail, rolling on the ground clutching his scratched arm.

The female pirate Angelina rushed over to hold him, and Jack also embraced his lover.

With a mournful expression, as if it was his dying moment, he sobbed and said:

"I'm sorry, Angelina. I know I hurt you deeply, but when I left you on that deserted island, I hoped that you wouldn't be affected by my cursed fate any longer.

I never thought that Captain Jack, who had traveled the world, would end my life in such a way. But I'm glad that you're with me in the last moments of my life..."

"Can you take your hand out of my clothes?"

At first, the female pirate was somewhat moved.

But soon she discovered the truth. Staring at Captain Jack, who showed no signs of weakness and was still trying to steal her voodoo doll, she cursed and punched him in the eye.

Barbossa and the others clenched their fists at this point.

Jack was not infected!

He didn't turn into a ghoul!

Mason's medicine was effective!

My God, the heavens above! This damn world seemed to be saved.

"Ah, my best friend Mason, I apologize for my foolish suspicion just now! If you need it, I can pay any price to exchange for your forgiveness to this blind old immortal."

With a smile on his face, Barbossa kicked the screaming and covering his eyes Jack away, walked up and shook Mason's hands. The great pirate's eyes were filled with undisguised desire and joy.

He said to the calm-faced Mason:

"Jack is yours now, as is the Black Pearl. Take the box of devil gold coins, and even my treasure can all be yours.

I have only one request.

Ten thousand!

I want ten thousand 'Hopes'..."

"Be bolder, my friend. I can give you fifty thousand! Even a hundred thousand."

Mason snapped his fingers.

He smiled and said to the increasingly bright-eyed Barbossa:

"Next, let's talk about the specifics of our cooperation plan."
