Chapter 55 – Big mantis, it's time to take the medicine

Considering the occasional problems in the experiment, Xu Yun and his team used a total of six culture containers and over five hundred cockroaches for their first experiment. The containers were densely packed with cockroaches, creating a dark and crowded scene.

Looking at the cockroaches covering the walls of the containers, a scene that Xu Yun had once imagined suddenly appeared in his mind:

An invisible deep pit, with tens of thousands of cockroaches living inside. A person loses balance and falls into the pit, only to be submerged by the cockroaches...

Hmm...

Xu Yun quickly dismissed this image from his mind and focused back on the operation table.

As a biological poison, Imidacloprid acts on the acetylcholine receptors of nicotine, interfering with the pest's nervous system and disrupting the transmission of chemical signals, thereby killing the target from a physiological perspective.

As for its spreading principle, there are two ways.

The first is through physically mixed bait to attract cockroaches. Cockroaches have a chemical sensing range of up to two hundred meters, so many cockroaches will come over to eat the poisoned bait when they smell it.

However, this can only attract a small number of cockroaches. The real effect of Imidacloprid in killing cockroaches lies in the second method?

That is...

Cannibalism among cockroaches.

Yes, cockroaches do eat the corpses of their own kind.

Live cockroaches like to eat the corpses and excrement of dead cockroaches. So, occasionally when walking on the road, you can see some cockroach corpses with their tails or heads hollowed out. Those are the remains left by cannibalism.

Imidacloprid utilizes this habit for its spreading, but Imidacloprid can only affect up to three generations, and the dead cockroaches do not carry pheromones, so the effect of attracting the same species is limited.

Currently, the best domestic Imidacloprid bait for civilian use is Bayer's "Baimieshi". It is expensive but has astonishing effects. A drop the size of a grain of rice can kill about 60 cockroaches and last for two to two and a half generations.

Another well-known formula is the one shared by the famous teacher Canghu Xiaoliang, which consists of boric acid powder, sugar, and mashed potatoes.

The ratio of boric acid powder to sugar is 1:1, and an appropriate amount of mashed potatoes is added to form a dough. The main ingredient that works is boric acid powder, which can cause dehydration and death in cockroaches when consumed. Sugar is used to attract cockroaches, and mashed potatoes are used to form the dough.

The effect of this formula is also quite good. You can see related comments under the boric acid sellers on Taobao, and by the way, you can chat about random things.

Returning to the laboratory.

"Baimieshi" is basically the ceiling for broad-spectrum cockroach killers at present. There are some products that can surpass its effectiveness, but mass production is difficult to achieve.

The dose of "Baimieshi" that can kill cockroaches looks like a lot, but it is only suitable for small areas. It can handle a room of 30 square meters, but for a large house over 100 square meters, it requires a large quantity and financial capability.

Therefore, Xu Yun's goal is obviously not just to be on the same level as "Baimieshi".

With everything ready, Xu Yun picked up the dropper and squeezed a drop of fourth-generation Imidacloprid bait onto each of the three small dishes.

The other three small dishes were filled with "Baimieshi", "Neon Xiaolin Pharmaceutical" cockroach killer, and "Kttu" insecticide produced by Maple Leaf Country, serving as controls.

The bait was about the size of a grain of rice, translucent, and looked somewhat like Furaltadone cream.

The biological containers for the fourth-generation Imidacloprid bait were numbered 1 to 3, while the others were numbered 4 to 6.

Then, Xu Yun and his team used the lifting device of the containers to place the small dishes at the bottom of the containers and turned on the cameras to observe the effects.

Xu Yun first observed the container marked as No. 2, which was a rectangular container with dimensions of 45X30X20, and it contained some drinking water.

The cockroaches brought back from He Jiajia were very active, constantly crawling and climbing on the bottom and walls of the container. You could clearly see the legs and slightly opening and closing wings of the American cockroach, as if it would fly onto your face if there were no barriers.

When the bait butterfly touched the bottom of the container, it caused a slight vibration, and the cockroaches in the container immediately became busy. But after about ten seconds, these cockroaches gradually returned to normal.

After another ten seconds.

The chemical hybrid pheromones in the fourth-generation Imidacloprid began to diffuse, gradually attracting three or four cockroaches to come closer and quickly start eating the bait.

At the same time, the cockroaches in containers 4 to 6 remained unaffected, with only a few cockroaches cautiously approaching.

In container No. 2, after a few cockroaches finished eating the bait, they retreated, and then a new batch of members came to replace them.

This situation continued for three rounds. Only in container No. 4, which contained "Baimieshi", did the cockroaches start to react after the first round.

It was clear that although they contained the same pheromone components, the effects of chemical synthesis and physical mixing were vastly different.

After a few more minutes, the cockroaches in container No. 6 finally gathered around the bait.

Seeing this, Xu Yun looked at Zhou Peiyao and asked, "Xiao Zhou, how much time has passed?"

"It has been 26 minutes and 36 seconds since the official release. Container No. 1 consumed four rounds, container No. 2 consumed five rounds, container No. 3 consumed four rounds, container No. 4 consumed two rounds, and containers No. 5 and No. 6 consumed one round each."

Xu Yun nodded and was about to encourage Zhou Peiyao when Ren Yongcun suddenly exclaimed excitedly, "Senior, look at container No. 2! This cockroach is reacting!"

Xu Yun quickly approached and followed Ren Yongcun's pointing finger to look.

It was an American cockroach about four centimeters long. At this moment, the cockroach was leaning against the wall of the container, and its antennae were rapidly spinning. Its wings were fully spread, and it looked very excited.

After another twenty minutes, the American cockroach couldn't even stand on the container wall anymore. Its supporting legs gave way, and it fell to the bottom of the container with its back facing down.

Although it quickly flipped over, judging from the speed at which it climbed up, its motor nerves were clearly malfunctioning.

As expected.

After a few more minutes, this large cockroach suddenly flipped over, and its six legs weakly flailed in the air.

What's more...

Due to the malfunctioning motor nerves, the binding protein in the cyclic pheromone, which had penetrated into the bone marrow, began to react with the pheromone receptors on the surface of the olfactory sensory neurons. The tissue expression became disordered, and a large amount of pheromones began to spread. In the following twenty minutes, a large number of male cockroaches gradually gathered around this female American cockroach, looking extremely aroused and eager.

However, due to some special circumstances of the first generation, the numerous male cockroaches did not start a group activity.

The female American cockroach completely lost signs of life under the watchful eyes of countless of its kind, and then.....

The male cockroaches brutally began to gnaw at its head.

........

The actions in the next chapter will be quite audacious, probably.....
